Chicago indie-electronica group City States ' Resolution EP is only five songs long, but that still feels like too many. Most of the songs fall into a repetition that lacks enough interesting twists and instrumentation to keep you wanting to listen. "Breathe" sounds like a Kenna pass off that never really builds to anything. The occasional distorted guitar hit breaks up the monotony of the spacey snyth lines and echoed drums, while everything loops around under breathy vocals. The following track, "It's Nothing", does no favors by ditching the drums and continuing the same sleepy [...]

If you find yourself stuck at your desk working today and unable to partake in the St. Patrick's Day shenanigans, you can still watch the Kansas City St. Patrick's Day Parade online (although I d... Continue reading "Watch the Kansas City St. Patrick's Day Parade online" >

There just must be something about this time of year that makes bands want to play other people's songs. Yesterday, we posted a Suicide cover from Disappears , and today, we have local indie rockers City States taking on "King Of Pain" originally by The Police. Once again, the band doesn't do a straight cover-by-the-numbers. City States makes the song their own but completely ditching the bouncy percussion of the original and instead uses a digital soundscape, and sweeping synths to power the cover. Listen to the song below: [...]

Meet Chicago's indie/new wave outfit City States . The four-piece have been around since 2008 and produce melodic art-pop in the vain of Sea & Cake and Depeche Mode. Yesterday, they released two brand new singles yesterday, one of which is titled "Safety". It's a floating electro-journey complete with thumping synth bass and soft, nearly surf, guitar play. Listen to "Safety" below: You can download both singles, "Safety" and "When And Where", for free at Citystatesmusic.com/music . And be sure to catch City States [...]

City-State is a band out of Washington, DC currently with 2 EP's out, Monument and "Wolves" + 4 . I happen to come across these guys during my monthly ritual of combing thru eMusic for some new tunes. There's definitely an Interpol influence here. Let's keep this simple. To me, this site has always been about supporting the local music scene. So I decided, that there is no better way to celebrate our first anniversary, than to make a mix of local music from the past year. I had so much fun, that I ended up making two discs. Some of these bands have come a long way in the last 12 months, some didn't even exist when we started and others are no more. That said, every song is from a band that claims (or claimed) the Baltimore/Washington metro area as [...]

Washington, DC - de facto political capital of the world. Is there such a thing as a music scene or has rock turned its back in disgust? Nope, plenty of indie bands play the live circuit and a particularly good one is city-state , a quartet that has just released their first full length album called Monument . The band is heavily inspired by UK bands like The Cure and Coldplay . Their guitar sound is a cleaned up version of The Jesus and Mary Chain . Monument [...]

Monument is the second disc, and first full length from Washington DC's CITY-STATE and follows up their critically lauded 2006 EP, Wolves + 4 . CITY-STATE 's sound is dramatic soaring vocals on a foundation of dark rhythmic drums and bass, surrounded by epic reverb laden guitars and keyboards. Like the contemporaries such as Interpol , British Sea Power and Coldplay they cite as influences, they too create an updated version of the Joy [...]

City-State, Monument 2007 The band City-State quickly became one of my favorite new bands when I heard their "Wolves" + 4 EP last year, in fact it was #7 on my 2006 EP Picks . The bands new album, Monument was released this past week on Liberty Fuse Records and once again this 4 member band from Washington D.C. has dropped in and swept me away with intense marching drums and atmospheric guitars. And Jim Anderson's soaring [...]

City-State, a Washington, D.C. foursome, have released their appropriately named first-full-length, "Monument." It's dark electronic mood rock. Not what I usually listen to, for sure, but it seems to me to be a fine example of the genre. I understand that Don Zientara lent his capable skills to the album (he's a veteran of Fugazi, Q And Not U, and The Walkmen), which explains why the sound is so good. This is an example of an incredibly well-produced album, and a solid debut. Music for driving in city rains. For fans of: Interpol, [...]
The guys of City-State were kind enough to e-mail yesterday and let me know they are coming to Philly on June 2nd to play at the Khyber. I'm hoping I can swing stopping in, but I don't know as I already have buko events scheduled for that day and night. They are supporting their newly released album Monument , which came out on May 15th. It's the first full length album for the band, who released and EP in 2006 'Wolves' + 4. The main crew responsible for City-State are Jim Anderson, Matthew [...]
[See post to listen to audio] mp3: City-State / Mary City-State bei MySpace "Washington, D.C., it's paradise to me It's not because it is the grand old seat of precious freedom and democracy, no no no." (The Magnetic Fields) Bei City-State aus Washington D.C. kommt irgendwann einmal der Punkt, wo ich aufhören sollte, nur noch nach Vorbildern zu suchen. Höre ich da jetzt Interpol? Höre ich den jungen Steven Patrick Morrissey singen? Ach nein, es sind ja City-State und ihr "Mary". Ja, [...]

City-State is a group of many personalities. On one song, they can sound melancholic and sweet, not unlike David Bazar's Pedro The Lion . On other tracks their sound shifts to something completely intricate and structured, comparable to Mogwai . They also remind me of Interpol , especially whenever "Mary" begins to play--the guitar chords are dissonant and clean, submerged underneath an aura of entrancement. While it's unclear what their definite sound is, it still seems to fit snugly--all these different forms of emotional guitar rock blend together nicely, combining mellow rock [...]

Washington, DC Swirling guitars and eerily beautiful vocals make for a near perfect full-length for this DC band. Monument easily puts City-State in the same league as their district mates Cedars. Expect to hear a lot more from these guys! "Mary" City-State on MySpace City-State on The Hype Machine

Yesterday City-State of Washington, D.C. released their first full-length CD, Monument , the follow-up to last year's EP Wolves + 4 , and a work that better showcases their strengths. The attention to production on this CD has taken the band a major leap toward a cleaner, more refined sound. City-State seems to be more focused and have a more unified sound than previously, while not losing the beautiful melodies that made the EP so promising. Instrumentally City-State is similar to Coldplay and Interpol (as in "C'Mere" and [...]

We recently received the opportunity to get an advanced listen to the city-state's first feature length album, Monument , due for release May 15 on Liberty Fuse Records . My comrades in blogging passed on it and, initially, so did I. I wasn't immediately tackled and wasn't easily won over. However, I've listened to the sneak preview stream and the two downloadable tracks a few times and I think there's something there for me - and others - to like. The quartet from Washington D.C. have been compared to Interpol and British Sea Power [...]

DC's City-State is getting ready to release a new album. On May 10, they will have a CD release party for Monument at Black Cat . Philly's A Study In Her contributed a remix to the CD and will be opening the show. We wouldn't be IA, if we didn't have a contest. We will be giving away a grand prize that includes two tickets to the release party and a CD. Two runner ups will receive copies of the CD. To win, all you have to do is send an [...]
