The Italian trio, Clap Rules , are back with a four-track EP. Nothing but analog grooviness once again. The title track Happynomony is a quirky house tune with ample use of that signature vocoder. The other tracks are mid-slow jams that'll have your head- followed by your body- moving to the beat. Their last full-length, Golden Hands , which I reviewed last year was one of my favorites of 2011. I can now rest in confidence that Clap Rules are here to stay and won't disappoint. In Italy when someone does something well, people compliment them saying they've got golden hands. Released some time last year on DFA, Michoacan 's slo-fi jam 'In The Dark Of The Night' gets perked up by Clap Rules with some playful synths and meaty riffs. As marketing gimmicks go, In Flagranti's smut disco schtick is pretty brilliant. This shouldn't obscure the fact that the group consistently puts out some of the best records in the genre though. Their latest release, Through a Rabbit Hole, is a whole new kind of weird. Guest Natalie Smash's vocals glide over a wonky synth sequence punctuated by detuned horn samples, making for a track that comes off as an overconfident wack job. Moscow's remix cranks up the tempo and santitizes the track for the dancefloor, though the programming is tight enough that it's not boring. My pick is the [...]
