Memorial Day is meant to be the holiday in which we do without the grand gestures associated with other holidays, like stuffing our faces, decorating our homes and yards with over-sized representations of capitalist deities like Santa Claus, and exchanging gifts we neither need or want (unless it's a Nintendo 3Ds). But when it comes right down to it, Memorial Day is just another excuse to have a day off in the early dawning of summer and to sleep in and, once more, fill our faces with the dead, burned flesh of animals. If you are the type, however, to [...]

Clare Burson plays simple, twangy ballads that subtly reinvent Americana, standing clear of sterile country cliches, and instilling in the genre a powerful dose of melancholy. So powerful that the song "Goodbye My Love" (embedded here) may prove to be a dangerous listening experience on a rainy day like this... But, unlike many other pop-obsessed blogs out there, The Deli is - and always will be - proud to celebrate the beauty of sophisticated sad music (our recent Lia Ices cover can testify that once for all). Clare's melodies are supported by her gentle alto, at times [...]

Filed under: News , New Music , Exclusive Singer Clare Burson had always wanted to know about the early life of her Jewish grandmother, Helga Rabinowitsch. Yet Rabinowitsch was reluctant to talk about it with her granddaughter and for good reason: Helga, then 19, and her younger brother Axel left Germany on Nov. 9, 1938. Later that night, a pogrom occurred in which 91 Jews were killed and over 7,000 Jewish businesses were destroyed, an event now known as Kristallnacht. [...]

Clare Burson sent me a track from her new concept album called Silver and Ash . What really caught my attention about this project is that it is a concept album that tells the true story of her Grandmother's childhood and eventual escape from Germany in 1938. A classically trained violinist, Burson began playing guitar while studying history at Brown University. After college and a year in Germany as a Fulbright Scholar, Burson returned to Tennessee where she recorded Silver and Ash with T-Bone Burnett. With Silver and Ash Ms. Burson has cleverly weaved [...]
At eight years old, Brooklyn-based singer and songwriter Clare Burson first heard about the harrowing wartime experiences of her grandmother Mimi. The story of a 19-year-old German Jew who managed to flee Nazi Germany on the eve of Kristallnacht became something of an obsession for Burson -- "it's haunted me for as long as I can remember" -- as she tried to imagine her grandmother's life and times, of persecution and escape and, she observes, "to grapple with that history and come to terms with it myself." These reflections serve as the inspiring catalyst for Silver [...]

On vacation this week... but I'll try to throw up a quick post or two if I have the time. Here's another weekend quickie for ya. This one features Kathleen Edwards playing the violin with singer/songwriter Clare Burson on Burson's "Boat of Leaves." It's from the show the two played together in Knoxville back in March. I emailed back and forth a bit with Clare last week, and you'll be pleased to know that her new album, Silver & Ash should be released [...]

As I had predicted ... Friday night was a great night for music in Knoxville with Kathleen Edwards headlining a show at my new favorite Knoxville music spot, The Square Room . Kathleen was Kathleen... which is to say she had the audience in tears with her songs and in stitches with her between song banter. My wife and I brought a couple of friends to the show who had never heard much of Kathleen's music before, and there were more than a few tears shed at some of the more tender songs such as "Asking for [...]

"Pardon My Heart" - Neil Young "Did you ever wake up to find, a day that broke up your mind?" -The Rolling Stones Yesterday I experienced such a day. It was partially by my own design. Two extremely difficult and heartbreaking situations in my personal life were dealt with, or at least put into motion. One involves my son, Lincoln, who is eight years old, and telling him the news that he and my ex-wife will be moving far away. 1000 miles to be exact, and [...]
