It's the first Friday in February and I think we all know what that means: Valentine's Day is coming (or looming, depending on your stance). In the recent years, capitalism has really done a number on the holiday, leaving significant others with sweaty palms over gifts and dinner dates. This February, Indie Shuffle would like to tip our hats to the purest essence of the holiday: love, sweet love. Today, enjoy some old school jams just waiting to electrify your holiday. From D'Angelo to Clarence Carter, many different moods and tastes are represented - different strokes for different [...]

Last year we had two compilations of classic Christmas soul (plus one featuring newer stuff); here is a third volume. It kicks off with a spoken intro by The Jackson 5 . Jermaine is crying – and the manner in which that is established always makes my smile – and he needs yuletide comforting. Wonderful stuff. Towards the middle we get socially conscious. Stevie Wonder , still just 17 years old, hopes for no hunger and no tears, but for peace and equality of man. Then the Harlem Children’s Choir , who sound rather older [...]

I first heard this song not off Clarence Carter's original album, but off the fantastic Wonder Boys soundtrack, which also includes such classics as Bob Dylan's "Things Have Changed," and "Buckets of Rain," Buffalo Springfield's "A Child's Claim to Fame," Little Willie John's "Need Your Love So Bad," and I'm going to stop listing them because pretty much every track is timeless. Someone in the sound department at Warner Bros. really did their homework. I'd put it as one of the top three movie soundtracks I've ever listened to, without question. "Slip Away" is my favorite, [...]

The story goes that Jim Morrison hated Light My Fire, The Doors’ great breakthrough hit. Recorded in August 1966, it was released in January 1967, at the dawn of the so-called Summer of Love. If it was true that Morrison disliked it, I’d sort of concur with his judgment. In fact, he didn’t hate the song, but resented that he had only a small part in writing his band’s signature hit (most of it was written by guitarist Robby Krieger). I don’t like The Doors much, and have more respect than affection for their version of Light My [...]

For 364 days a year this blog is dedicated to music I love, artists that need to be heard, and songs to make you sing/dance/cry/make love (delete as the mood fits)... However Christmas Day is a very very special day. Its a day when we listen to music we'd rather die than hear for the other 364 days. Nevertheless I've hunted high and low (ie, blew some dust off the CD rack) to find a few truly great xmas tracks (and some others that at least don't make you want to put those lovely new socks over [...]

We all know Clarence Carters 'Back Door Santa' (1968) and if it wasn't for his original, than we know it because of the samples Run DMC used from it for their classic 'Christmas in Hollis'. To me the Back Door versions of the Black Crowes (2005, a studio recording with horn section!) and Australian rockers Jet (2004, only on a Japanese rare tracks release) were new. If you know versions other and better than these, worth to post: lemme know. Clarence Carter - Back Door Santa Run DMC - Christmas in Hollis [...]

The first Christmas soul mix was very popular. Thank you to all the kind people who took the time to say nice things about it (and about my efforts here in general). Comments are always appreciated. As I pointed out in the blurb for the first mix, I held back a lot of great stuff for the follow-up. So this one might be even better than the first compilation. You be the judge of that. Be advised that in this batch are a couple of tracks that might not appeal to your mother: Rufus Thomas (Carla's [...]

This year I won't be doing a Halloween mix. For those who m issed last year's mixes, take a look at Any Major Halloween Vol. 1 (creepy stuff) and Any Major Halloween Vol. 2 (less creepy stuff) . Meanwhile, fortify yourself wth some soul music. Of all the mixes that I compile for this blog, I think doing the soul covers is my favourite. For one thing, as I go through my collection of music, I get to listen to some gorgeous soul albums I [...]

HEY! Guess what! We made a mixtape for Amanda over at Tadpole Audio of, what was originally supposed to be at least, "children's tales" - please note the quotation marks - called Come On In, Sit A Spell, & Let Me Tell You A Tale Mixtape!!! It's chock full of tales of hobos & hobbits, of murder & robots, mountaintops, mountain towns, & transvestites, stories of science fiction & hippie adventures, [...]
The third mix of Beatles covers, covering the period between the White Album (partly covered in the second mix) to the final album. The most significant song here is the Beach Boys' live recording of Back In The USSR, with Ringo Starr guesting. The song was, of course, Paul McCartney's satire of the Beach Boys. One imagines it was a find piss-take, because by 1968 the Beach Boys had long left the girs-cars-surf scene behine (well, except Mike Love, who never really got past it). Two songs here, by George Benson and by Booker T & the MGs, [...]

The transition from novel to cinema is quite a tricky one. While some argue that "the book is forever better than the movie," certain exceptions have been made. The most famous cases that can be argued in defense of their cinematic counterparts include Steven Spielberg's 1975 thriller Jaws (written by Peter Benchley) and Francis Ford Coppola's crime 1973-74 masterpieces The Godfather trilogy (based on the novel by Mario Puzo). With that being said however, the brilliant Irish author Roddy Doyle's Barrytown trilogy is another dazzling series of stories that at first seem incredibly [...]
I was underwhelmed by Wes Anderson's last feature length The Darjeeling Limited , mostly because of the soundtrack. The movie's score was dominated by the Kinks' 1970 satirical look at the record industry, Lola Versus Powerman And The Moneygoround, Part One —one of my all-time favorite records. But topically, the songs had little if anything to do with Anderson's film. Sure "This Time Tomorrow" and "Strangers" sounded beautiful on the big screen, but lyrically, thery are part of a bigger picture that does not belong nor fit with Anderson. To me, their inclusion felt entirely incongruent. [...]

It's a funny thing how a movie trailer can grab your attention and even earn a blog post despite it being something you wouldn't necessarily go and see in the cinema. That's all thanks to the clever music coordinators who select perfect songs for that changing scene in a trailer - that transition that suddenly draws in your focus. I watched a trailer for a film earlier called How I Got Lost - not really my cup of tea but a classic Clarence Carter song dropped in half way through and now I'm looking to [...]

So I watched the cool new trailer for the new Wes Anderson -directed Fantastic Mr. Fox film and what stuck out for me most (other than the mental stop motion animation) was the songs attached to it. Don't think anybody's really mentioned them so far so here you go. Listen: The Bobby Fuller Four - Let Her Dance Listen: Clarence Carter - Looking For A Fox MP3: The Bobby Fuller Four - Let Her Dance [...]
