Brighton UK chanteuse Sophie Madeleine turns in a capable cover of a fave OBG radio classic "Spooky", which was first popularized by The Classics IV and later Dusty Springfield. Sophie's careful coos and soft ukelele strums form a cool counterpoint to "Spooky"'s, well spooky content and feel. Spin it. Sophie Madeleine ( Facebook ) Rating 8.3

Though Cover Wars generally publishes on a Tuesday, it occurred to me this week that by tomorrow Halloween will be in our rearview mirror and that I really wanted to write the Spooky Cover Wars this year. As you may know, Spooky was actually written by saxophonist Mike Sharpe but it was an instrumental. It was Classics IV that penned the lyrics and as such, for the purpose of this piece, will be referenced as the original. The Contestants: Artist [...]

At times they sounded like a polyester cabaret act. At times they sounded like a taste of blue-eyed southern soul. But, at all times, they had a pointed sense of melody and texture and that's what made the Classics IV so popular for so many years. They started as a cover band in South Florida in the early 1960's, imitating the Ventures with instrumental versions of Misty and Summertime . Later, they moved Denny Yost to the front of the stage, where he played drums and sang at the same time. [...]

Dennis Yost, singer and drummer for late sixties act Classics IV, passed away of respiratory failure on Sunday outside of Cincinnati, Ohio. Yost had been in poor health for several years following a serious fall in 2006; in recent years he had fought for the rights of performers against copycat touring groups. His group Classics IV had three top ten hits, "Stormy" (above, 1968), "Spooky" (1967) and "Traces" (1969). "Spooky": "Traces" Yost was 65. [...]

Ne nni ekki einu sinni að skri fa um hann. Morrissey var skÃnandi góður og hress. Fullkomin poppstjarna með frábæra sviðsframkomu. Skipulagið á tónleikunum var fáránlegt. Þeir sem áttu miða à stúku fengu sæti niðri á gólfi og þeir sem voru à stæði voru à stúkunni. Svo endaði það með þvà að þeir sem höfðu mætt fyrst á staðinn til að tryggja sér fremstu sætin niðri voru illa sviknir þvà einhverjum fokkings hálfvitum datt à hug að gefa skÃt à liðið sem sat prúðbúið og standa fyrir framan sviðið. Fólk tróð sér fyrir framan sviðið svo þeir sem fremst sátu sáu ekki neitt. [...]
