BOSTON - Exposing our friends to new music is probably the most rewarding thing about hosting the blog. And, helping our local friends (both old and new) in bands is a great way to support the region's music scene . So that's why we are really glad to finally get the word out on Winter is Cold , - a compilation of Boston-area artists who want you to hear what they've been up to! The music download is completely free. It's never been [...]

With a name like Clawjob , I expected "Manifest Destiny" to be a nightmarish tale of getting hand release from a witch. But I found that while the band has its hard side, it's capable of softer, meditative songs as well, like the opening cut, "Era of Good Feelings." The band describes the album as six songs about 19th-century America, but at it's core the album is contemporary, singing of universal themes like death and drugs. As their name suggests, the album has hardcore influences, yet it's not just a bunch of screaming and power chords. [...]

When I first opened up the CD Space Crackers by Clawjob I thought it was a joke. The band name sounds like a really bad metal band, the cover is a fish on a bicycle (?), and the album came with a handwritten letter detailing how the album was a rock opera about the end of the world. Also on the letter was a drawing of a half-elephant half-batman that the band made for me (actually that was pretty awesome). So, I was actually surprised when the album was not only listenable [...]
Been out of state, then catching up at work, but - have no fear! - I'm back. So to make up for my absence, here's a heap o' new atrocities: Super Mario: The Opera - Written last year by Jonathan Mann (also the voice of Mario), and performed at Los Angeles' CalArts, this isn't your grandpa's opera. Mostly-acoustic rock is more like it, with a sizeable cast playing the various characters. [...]

You see these things floating around the web all the time -- some studio engineer "sneaks" out 15 seconds of some megastar's new hit, which then miraculously finds its way onto every fan board and blog on the internerd. At least pop's hype machine offers the illusion of subtlety, even if somewhere it's inked in as part of the marketing plan. The thing we loved about the Killers leaking a 40-second snippet of their new single was that the Stereogum link went right to Island/Def [...]
