A little dose of pretty soundscape pop can be a wonderful thing to have in your life. Finding that perfect background music for the gentlest of moments in your life can be absolutely exhilarating. Clean Equations might just be the perfect indie pop group you can find right now for such an experience. Their debut album People/Variables has a lot to say as far as lyrical content, but not likely enough to deter your attention away from the mass of organs, splendid guitar work, and wonderfully out-of-sync sound bites [...]

The Vaselines (Sunday at First Unitarian Church) FRIDAY, OCTOBER 1 Tonight's Fun show at World Cafe Live is sold out, but there are plenty of other options for anyone who slept on getting tickets. Local indie-pop ensemble Oh! Pears —which we highlighted earlier this week—performs with Missing Palmer West and Jac at Johnny Brenda's (9 p.m./21+/$10); we're pretty sure there should be some room left for the audience once the band packs all 13 members of its ever-growing lineup into the venue. Meanwhile, anyone [...]
[ download ] Today's track comes with a disclaimer. If you're feeling down in the dumps or even the least bit morose over a recent (or not-so-recent) break-up or other relationship ending event, "Buried Translations" by Philadelphia's Clean Equations will do little to sweeten your mood. Beginning with the question of "What went wrong?" and climaxing with several minutes of the repeated vow "I'm not coming back someday, no I'm not coming back, no I'm not coming back to marry you," this isn't going to be any couple's special song. [...]

>> New in town? No plans this evening then? Well scrape together what passes for your forms of ID and beer money and head over to All Asia Cafe in Cambridge, Mass., where beginning at 8PM or so you can participate in the filming of a video for The Hush Now 's forthcoming discoteca-tastic single "Vietnam Giraffe." The single and the EP it comes from, Shiver Me Starships (art above), will be self-released by the dream pop quintet Sept. 28. Both will be available digitally for free from TheHushNow.com , and for local currency [...]
I've been really loving this new site called Shuffler.fm the past week or two. It's kind of like Pandora, but instead of your music tastes going into an algorithm that predicts what you might like, it's just keyed into various music blogs and spits out songs based on the genre you plug in - kind of like walking into a world-wide-web-sized independent record store. It's way more random than most internet radio, and a whole lot of fun. It definitely has some kinks to work out (the same Gillian Welch song came up for me 5 [...]

Clean Equations is the Philadelphia, PA / New York, NY / Melbourne, AU based music collective fronted by lyricist / song writer /chemical engineer, Mike Nyhan. They return to the scene with their first full-length album, People/Variables , after releasing their 2009 self-titled debut EP. On this LP you will find ten songs full of soaring harmonies, layers of melodic guitars, organs, pianos, and the majestic strings of the Astoriadelphia Orchestra that create these delicate soundscapes reminiscent of Explosions in the Sky, but not as experimental-Have to admit, really digging their music, very tranquil and pleasing to the [...]
Monday, August 9, 2010 Today's Quick Mention: 4 years! As of today, that's how long this site has been up on the interwebs. I've had a lot of fun. Hopefully you have too. Now, let's get back to the music. I'm actually packing up and moving this week (update your address database, PR people!), so I didn't really have any time to assemble anything other than a normal posting of five tracks. Enjoy. : Makeup Monsters - Rude [...]

Philadelphia indie band Clean Equations are set to release their album 'People/Variables' this August 31st. Clean Equation's sound is minimalistic, melancholic and a tad psychedelic, it has the power to draw its listener to the song on its first minute, but don't expect to find a catchy chord that it will forever get stuck in your head, but know that you will listen to them and you will like them. Clean Equations - Buried Translations [...]

It's scratchy, experimental, lo-fi and has almost 40 seconds of background toy keyboard tugs to kick things off. Yep, something this scattershot shouldn't really work but 'Haitian Noise Piece' is a gorgeous rambling mess. Mike Nyhan is the man at the controls and Clean Equations is what he calls himself when this chaotic noise erupts. It should appeal to those who enjoy making the join between No Age, Times New Viking and the Beastie Boys and there'll be lots more where that came from when Clean Equations' debut record 'People/Variables' comes out in September. If it is as memorable as [...]

After receiving some amusing comments on my last Clean Equations post from their dedicated fan base, I'm excited to announce more CE news, in the hopes that we'll get another round of comedic commentary. (Honestly, though, take a look - I have no idea what they were talking about. I get lost when it comes to anything math-related, even when it's a joke.) So, to the news. And music. Clean Equations will be releasing their debut full length, titled People / Variables , which is way more polished/produced than their previous effort. Remember [...]

Clean Equations could easily be Messy Equations with seven band members. But in the age of the indie-pop collective (at least for me), they pull off a solid and tempered group dynamic. Musical hysteria be damned, you're losing in the big bands battle! Minimalist percussion and layers upon layers of rippled keys and guitars make Clean Equations a captivating listen. At times brooding and foreboding, they seem to have a predilection for mystery. Enchanting backing sounds and carefully plucked strings lead into full, dark crescendos wrapped in distortion. Lead vocalist Michael Nyhan and frequent partner Gretchen Lohse [...]

We`re shamefully running way behind in the emailed material stakes, almost a month in some cases. Not great if you`ve got a hot release to plug and your local music bloggers listen to more music than an elevator attendant. A polite enquiry regarding your emailed music submission will certainly get the ball rolling with the added knowledge that you remember who and where the promotion was sent to. "Clean Equations began as the solo project of vocalist/guitarist/keyboardist /general noisemaker Mike Nyhan. Between constant travel as a full time chemical engineer, Mike managed to compile a plethora [...]

Last week we mentioned the new State Capital Field Recordings vinyl comp featuring Vivian Girls, A Place To Bury Strangers, and many others. This week, the label sent us a digital copy of the comp, so we can actually share a sample. Here's the track from Philadelphia's Clean Equations , the newest addition to the State Capital roster: MP3: Clean Equations - "French Noise Piece" (Tip: it's not really a "French noise [...]
