Clinic have been around for a long time. Their debut album, Internal Wrangler , came out when I was just starting high school and I still remember my best friend Josh hyping them as a less bombastic, mellower version of our then favorite UK rock group, Radiohead. Skip forward some 13 years later and last night was my first opportunity to see Clinic live — albeit without Josh, who was forced to work late in Sacramento (adulthood? fuck) — at the Rickshaw Stop. Canadian show openers No Joy lived up to their [...]

Photos and words by Scott Sheff The get-up of surgical masks and scrubs may be a tongue-in-cheek poke at its own name (and homage to bands Crime and The Residents) , but the eclectic sounds of Liverpool’s post-punk revival /noise rock band Clinic were delivered with surgical precision Wednesday night at The Troubadour. With lead singer Ade Blackburn’s distinct voice and the band’s use of unique, non-conventional instruments such as a harmonium and melodica, the live experience is nothing short of enthralling and infectious. Early arrivers were treated to two bands ready to bust onto [...]

Live This Month: May 2013 — an audio guide through SF concerts this month (Podcast #305) In Live This Month , we sample some of the great local and out-of-town bands performing in the coming month in the San Francisco Bay Area. Few recent artists have transitioned from lo-fi to hi-fi better than Kurt Vile , whose latest album, Wakin on a Pretty Daze , is another winner from the Philly-based musician, full of long, languid songs that feel spacious but not aimless. Happy 1st of May ... ► Paramore visits the Wiltern behind its wildly popular new self-titled album. Fans are "Still Into You," as the video suggests. ► The Killers do the first of two SoCal dates, this one at Honda Center. ► U.K. provocateurs (and masked men) Clinic , doing their first U.S. tour since 2010, play the Troubadour behind their latest album "Free Reign," supported by No Joy and Electric Flower Group. ► And there's a great local lineup at the Bootleg Bar, with NO , [...]

There’s a lot of great stuff going on in Canadian band No Joy . I love electronic music and indie pop and the like, but it’s always a blast seeing a band that can really rock. The heavy, distorted guitars and bass somehow complement the female vocal harmonizing wonderfully, resulting in a really cool sound. I don’t want to make gender into a big thing here, because they’re a great band regardless, but it’s great to see such a cool band that’s also playing live shows with a 3 to 1 girl to guy ratio. (It’s also probably worth [...]

The reaction I got when I told a couple of people about this Clinic show was basically, "they're still around?" This was, to be fair, sort of my reaction too. Not that I was surprised they were still a going concern but because I really hadn't heard much about them lately. It seems that more and more these days we're programmed to move on to the next big thing and so I hadn't really given the band a listen since 20082s Do It! However the Liverpool based band has been knocking out albums on a steady [...]
