For some people, Monday is a day for focusing and energizing, shaking off that weekend rust and getting ready to punch the week in the face, rhetorically speaking. But for most of us, it's really not that at all... It's just... It's always there, looming, waiting to make us face the world on its terms, not ours. Some playlists will try to stop that, to change you from Samuel Sadsack to Mabel Motivated. This one won't. This is for those Mondays when you give up before your alarm stops ringing. Enjoy (All 10 tracks [...]

Voodoo Village Recordings is one of the brightest up-and-coming record labels to arrive in 2011 and home to an eerily beautiful and mysterious collection of forthcoming recordings from the group Cloak & Dagger . In the interest of full disclosure, the label is run by some long-time friends of mine, namely B. Thornburg, Matthew Ess and Taylor Dawson, and I'm known to offer advice and services to them from time to time. I don't invest my time in projects just because I have friends doing them; I have to be convinced [...]
Immediately, I'm wondering who Petzi of Honey For Petzi is, and cursing my lack of European reference knowledge (Is this him?). The foursome from France that makes music under said name probably has other motives for making music, but their name speaks to their playful nature, which is profoundly evident in their recent album, General [...]

Seattle's Fuzzy Cloaks have a new 8 song cassette with the name of Solar Hits that may be worth your time if your time is worth anything. Fuzzy Cloaks is the side project of Scott Yoder, frontman for The Pharmacy. Listen to "Bongfire" http://www.kindturkeyrecords.c om/
Why do all of the best bands break up way before their time? This past weekend, I made the pilgrimage from Philadelphia down to Richmond, VA to catch their Government Warning play their goodbye show. Playing at Strange Matter, I haven't been there since it was the Nancy Raygun nearly 7 years ago. Strangely enough, the place didn't seem to have changed at all. The sold out venue was
As they prepare for their first recorded release since they revved up their new band, the Cloak Ox are in the midst of a freakin' onslaught of media blitz this week.
The time has come people. The kids from the Cloak Ox have been making a steady impact on the Twin Cities music scene since we first started losing our shit about them late last year. They've ta
De debuutsingle 'She is a [...]

wait for the morning to bring the sun, tonight we'll be dreaming of rain ♫ Duke Raoul - Cloak & Dagger Duke Raoul play the kind of slippery indie jams that can seem a bit caffeinated and rough around the edges but after a few listens they soak into your skin and you just wanna hit repeat. Their Young Starlings EP is four tracks of churning and catchy rock music that seem appropriate for both sweaty basements and summery days. I'm not sure how they pulled that off but it could have to do [...]
Cool news from the Totally Gross National Product camp today: The Minneapolis label is getting ready to release the debut EP from Andrew Broder's newest project the Cloak Ox, and the band has already

PDX Pop Now! 2011 fell on perhaps the only perfect weekend weather-wise of this stubborn Portland summer and it was immediately apparent sunshine was not the only charmed aspect of this eight year-old, all-ages, three-day music fest featuring a wide array of some of the most diverse local acts Portland has to offer. With their two stages, one outdoors and one inside the warehouse space Refuge PDX alternating three acts in a row, I was constantly amazed at how the shifting venues kept the entire event running on time and the scene fresh and popping as the crowds flowed back [...]
A track from the debut Haxan Cloak album. This is the solo effort of multi-instrumentalist Bobby Krlic, and he lays out some pretty dense and emotive soundscapes on this new LP. On "The Fall," a cello drone mutters underneath some of the strangest chorus vocals I've heard. It literally sounds like the vocal group is getting surprised again and again. What they're surprised by, I'm not sure, but it's lead to an interesting sound that has only made the music more haunting. Look for this Haxan Cloak album on Aurora Borealis . There's even a [...]

There was a special Polaris Salon listening session presented by CHARTattack's Aaron Brophy about this album back in April. Can't say it blew me away as I listened to it down there back then. Repeat listens once it made the Long List didn't sway me from that initial opinion either but maybe some of y'all might feel differently than I did? Just because the barren days of winter have long since retreated behind us, that doesn't mean we've lost our interest in bleak, frigid soundscapes. Though The Haxan Cloak might be better suited to grey skies and harvest rituals, its a welcome record no matter what season. Melding the ominous overtones and looming low frequencies of KTL and Sunn o))) with prepared strings and sound forged scrapings that could inhabit Svarte Greiner's kingdom; the record plays out nightmarish ambience that could suck the heat out of any room. The moniker is the alias of Bobby Krillic who's able to imbue a [...]

Thanks to Longfellow, Dickens and ninjas "cloak and dagger" came to mean silent assassins or spies. The cloak hides the weapon of destruction. Around the beginning of February I bought a log of goat cheese. I used a bit and then put the rest in the fridge. It sat there. Every week, when it came time to plan the menu, I forgot about it. I finally decided to turn it into a sandwich. When I reached for it I realized that the outside had molded. Not a problem, I cut off the mold and used the rest. Baguette created the [...]
