by Bill Pearis Close Lobsters / The School We already knew that The Monochrome Set would be performing at this year's NYC Popfest (May 30 - June 2) but now the rest of the line-up has been announced and it's pretty great with appearances from New Zealand Flying Nun legends The Bats , two bands who featured on NME's legendary C-86 cassette (Scotland's Close Lobsters [!] [...]
Close Lobsters' "What Is There To Smile About?" was originally released in 1988.

Close Lobsters - I Kiss the Flower in Bloom Close Lobsters - Just Too Bloody Stupid Close Lobsters - Got Apprehension
We shine a spotlight on the relatively unknown cover heroes Doleful Lions and offer up their covers of The Beach Boys, Big Star and more!

Yesterday morning felt like a burlesque of Christmas day. After an unsettled night, I woke up with a childish sense of anticipation. Not for presents, but for destruction. I didn't want it, but after hours of disaster porn on the news, I confess, I wanted...something big to show for it. Happily and anti-climactically, so very little was in evidence. Wet streets, a few little branches and leaves on the ground, nothing falling from the sky. A few minutes to organize my perversely conflicted reaction, and I decided [...]

This podcast is, as you will already know, very, very late. Personally I blame a combination of the RNLI, gin, and the fact that Mrs. Toad is away all week, which meant that yesterday wasn't really available for blog things. It's also not very new music-orientated either, so hopefully those of you who come here pretty much just for that won't be too disappointed. I think what happened was that I got so into a handful of new releases recently that I neglected all the others, so when I came to sit down and write about [...]

In the March 2008 issue of Mojo, there was a sprawling article on the Smiths. But if you look a little closer (on page 75 to be exact), you'll find a list of bands that were predecessors, contemporaries, and influencers on Morrissey, Marr & Co. These "indie" bands, oft classified as C81/86 or as part of Sarah or Postcard records, shared some of the jingle and jangle of the Smiths, without the spotlight. While some of the bands may remain in their cult status, others I must admit, I did listen to occasionally or often: Wild Swans, Orange [...]
While this time of year brings warmer temperatures and more hours of daylight, this week's new releases are thematically more fitting for the dead of winter - with its cold, wickedness, grit and grime, absence of leaves, grass and flowers, and long hours of darkness. For lovers of garage rock, there's much to offer this [...] Read more, get songs or stream the entire mix on Indie Rock Cafe

To mark the 25th anniversary of the cassette that launched a genre, Test Pressing is streaming NME’s C86 Mixtape. When C86 was originally released, I remember thinking many of these bands were sappy copycats, neutering my old post-punk favorites like the Bunnymen and The Cure. Little did I know these youngsters would spawn all the indie pop that I love today in my 402s! Check out a nice 25th anniversary reflection over at The Quietus . Track Listing after the jump... NME’s Classic C86 Mixtape Track [...]
During the past two years, The Tallest Man on Earth has toured extensively throughout the U.S. and Europe with Bon Iver and John Vanderslice, and recently as a headline artist to sold out shows on two continents, yet another indication of Matsson's fairly rapid ascent to fame. How can I do Peel Sessions and not mention the most famous indie band from Paisley ever? Time for local heros Close Lobster then. Mostly first noticed due to their inclusion on NME's C86 tape with Firestation Towers, that landed them a deal with Fire Records - who on a side note seem to shaft every artist they work with, as far as the horror stories I've heard about them go. Only two albums to their name, Foxheads Stalk This Land and Headache Rhetoric, along with a handful of singles. Word has it that there's a [...]

Very special episode of Danger Radio. We play the legendary and rarely found C86 album in it’s entirety in order. Along the way we discuss the bands and what it all means to myself and my co-host Jake Ryan. This is one of about 5 albums I can point to that shaped my musical tastes and I’m proud to say that it sits at the top of that list. PLAYLIST: Velocity Girl – Primal Scream Happy Head – The Mighty Lemon Drops Pleasantly Surprised – The [...]

Seattleites have been blessed with quite a lot of good record stores, and most of them thankfully are still in business. Our luck in having so many outlets in the city to spend money on records may be tenuous at best, but as they say carpe diem. That is exactly what Chris Mac has done by starting up a new record store / mail order. The store is called Jigsaw Records , and is due to open it's doors here in Seattle this Saturday. As I said, Seattle has more than its fair share of [...]

MM like many millions of others loved the first MGMT album. So yesterday MM (along with many, many other blogs) posted the new, free advance track from the forthcoming MGMT album, which comes out via Columbia Records on April 13th. The song was freely available via the excellent Stereogum and we, like many others, simply posted it on MM as well. It's pretty much the norm in the world of fair-minded music blogs as far as we can see. You listen to a [...]

Let's make some plans - Close Lobsters I know very little about the Close Lobsters, and have concentrated pretty much all my listening to them on this one particular song. And what a song it is. I probably would have passed over it if i wasn't once hit with the realisation how great it actually is, listening (as i do with too many things) to it passively or with too many distractions. It is a pop song. Everything amazing about it should be on [...]

Continuing the series of tracks and words as found on the CD The Indie Scene 1986 , a compilation released in 1992. mp3 : Close Lobsters - Going To Heaven To See If It Rains (Fire BLAZE 15) Possessing a wicked vocal style and well-crafted lyrical edge, Close Lobsters are yet another indie legend who disappeared long before they had time to fulfill their promise.'Going To Heaven' tells just part of the story, if you ever get the chance [...]
