Cloud rap torchbearers Main Attrakionz recently teamed up with cLOUDDEAD cohorts Jel and Zachg, who provide low key, ambient production underneath the Oakland rappers' laid-back flows on a new EP. That affair, a four-track EP called cLOUDLIFE and it's out today. Stream it below. Read More...

by chuck bell There are very few bands that have had as much of an impact on the current state of both hip-hop and indie rock as cLOUDDEAD . The avant-garde group consisted of Doseone (Adam Drucker), Odd Nosdam (David Madison) and Why? (Yoni Wolf). While attending art school at the University of Cincinnati, Wolf met Drucker on campus after the semi-finals for the 1997 Scribble Jam, Cincinnati's annual hip-hop festival. Drucker had just battled the then-unknown Eminem, and having [...]

cLOUDDEAD cLOUDDEAD (Mush, 2001) Man, what a dream team we had with cLOUDEAD. In retrospect, I probably should have cherished it more. But the splitting of the group hasn't been all bad. I mean, Subtle and Why? are both super amazing on their own, but it was the teaming of emcees Doseone and Why? together with the brilliant Odd Nosdam which started it all. Their debut reeks of the most inventive, forward thinking "hip/hop" music that has ever been created. Honestly, I don't consider the misty, [...]

The beautiful thing about hip hop is that you can say some of the weirdest, most inane, ridiculoid phrases, but say them with conviction or jest, and suddenly you're creating New Speak. From "rap at high speed strawberry kiwi" to "gimme them girls with the pumps and a bump", it's not really what you say, but how you say it. Try this on then: Rattlesnake caught in a wheel well, strawberry in an ostrich throat. Gully. [...]
Themselves is producer Jel and rapper Doseone, who detach themselves from the Anticon hive mind to release their own ultra-fractalized riffs on hip-hop and experimental music. Their newest CrownsDown is built on the same frame as Nas and Gang Starr and to fit alongside Doseone's side gig teaching kids how to rap. This interview by Matt Dupree.
Yeah, even though it's been about a month since I started trying to ride, I haven't ridden my unicycle since last Saturday. My hip has been feeling better but I've also been stretching a bunch too. I'm not sure if it's really fucked up or if I'm just getting old and pushing too hard. Either way, I'll be back trying to ride the beast tomorrow so more updates will certainly be forthcoming. In the meantime: MP3 | cLOUDDEAD - Physics Of A Unicycle Ten

Prolific hip hopsters Doseone and Jel have dusted off their Themselves project and created a new mixtape, entitled theFREEhoudini . As the title sort of suggests, it's a free download (although there is a CD version, too. More on that in a sec). But what would a mixtape be without guests? Nothing, that's what. So it's lucky theFREEhoudini is packed full of them. Pretty much anyone you could name from the Anticon family is in there, including a very briefly reformed cLOUDEAD, as well as Buck 65, Aesop Rock, Busdriver, Lionesque, Slug Of Atmosphere, D-Styles, DJ Baku, [...]

Featuring guest appearances from Buck 65, Aesop Rock, Busdriver, Lionesque, Slug of Atmosphere, D-Styles, Pedestrian, Sole, Serengeti, and Yoni Wolf and Odd Nosdam as cLOUDDEAD (not to mention the whole entire mixtape being mixed down by Nosdam as well), theFREEhoudini serves as Doseone and Jel's return, posse record that never was, and contribution to [...]

I've got your 2008 right here… WHY? - Alopecia that's it folks — if I took any new record away from 2008 and didn't have to listen to any of the others ever again, I'd be just fine. Portishead, The Cure, My Morning Jacket, Kings of Leon, The Raconteurs, NIN, Sigur Ros and a few others (are we really counting Radiohead again? ) put out exceptional records this year, but c'mon when do they put out BAD music? The Mae Shi and The Dodos made exceptional music that blew me away [...]

"I only played chess once in my life and I lost" ALBUM: WHY? - ALOPECIA words: Jamie Milton The clocks had just struck past four o'clock today, the street lights were changing their on-times to conform to the darker afternoons and it was occurring to me that I hadn't yet scrolled anything on my favourite album of the year. And it's funny that it took so long because when playing 'Alopecia' all you think about is yourself and what's around you. You don't look back incase some nasty [...]

30th & Dolores, 2008 Pitch-bending knob twiddlers, Boards of Canada make music for the fourth dimension. What is the 4th D ? It's that sub conscience level of past memories long forgotten. It might even be from a previous life, if you believe in such a thing. It can be scary for some, and enlightening for others. It's best to listen to this music on a partly sunny day, in the shade, at about 2pm in the afternoon, on a Saturday. cLOUDHEAD - Dead Dogs Two (Boards Of Canada Remix) [...]

For a couple weeks now I've been getting continuous positive comments regarding the Diplo remix I posted. I thought I might acknowledge said reactions a little bit more and let go of some other tracks that manage to indulge similar feelings of guilty nostalgia while simultaneously generating some refreshing sensibilities. All of these tracks desperately strive to be passe, but manage to hook me back into my troubled youth, relentless in their refusal to let certain conditions and moods wane their own momentum. But I project... Perhaps, maybe these songs are in just [...]
- - - - It's said that yawns are contagious, like laughs, or syphilis. When there's a small group of people in a room and one person is inspired to yawn, be it by tire or light-headedness, it's almost a sure thing that another person in the vicinity will yawn, and possibly another, until there is [...]
