robert palmer - "johnny and mary" (download) Yep, this is from the same late rocker who brought hits like "Addicted to Love," "Simply Irresistible," and "Doctor, Doctor (Give Me the News)," as well as a member of the 802s band Power Station . This record, Clues , came out in 1980, long before he became a household name because of his MTV hits. This record veered more in a new wave/synth pop direction, often reaching Gary Numan -esque moments. [...]

They have taken one bubble gum indie song called "Pumped Up Kicks" and turned it into one of the most downloaded AND most-radio-played songs of 2k11. Grimes "Oblivion" There's a girlishness to the sound of Claire Boucher's voice on this track that makes the music seem a bit twee, but there's something a bit deeper and darker going on in the arrangement. The tune seems to tangle itself around a synth part that wouldn't sound out of place on a Knife or Little Dragon record, the vocal melody sounding a bit like someone trying to sing "I Think We're Alone Now" but not quite getting it right. A brief postscript to my paean to The Lovin' Spoonful 's late psych/pop masterpiece "Only Pretty What a Pity" from from a few weeks ago : I just got off the phone with the song's co-writer and lyricist, Spoonful drummer Joe Butler -- and I gotta tell you, to me that was as cool as if I'd been talking to a Beatle; I mean, I was and am a HUGE Spoonful fan -- and it seems I got the lyrics to the song slightly wrong.
