Well if there is one thing we learned about crummy weather and one's love for Montreal based bands, it's that the two go hand in hand or, better yet, ear in ear. Although the suspected effects of global warming may be to blame for this unusually warm weather in November, it's raining today and the weekend is quickly upon us.. time to spin a nice track (from Montreal). If there are few independent rock acts that come to mind when you think of Canada and her delicious maple syrup, I'd venture to say both [...]
By ANDY VIHSTADT While Nick Diamonds is moving ahead with his Reefer, Islands, Th' Corn Gangg and Human Highway projects, his former Unicorns band mate is dropping Clues. Alden Penner has teamed up... Continue reading "The Download: New Clues MP3" >

Aside from a few pro-Obama appearances here and there, Arcade Fire has really lived up to its self-imposed hiatus . We'll that is Arcade Fire, the band . It's members on the other hand, have kept busy over the last few months, investing a good amount of time in a number of side-projects. First, drummer Jeremy Gara could be found hanging with Kathleen Edwards over the summer and then, Colin Stetson, the band's touring saxophonist, joined several other high-profile indie rockers to form The Sway Machinery . Whether these [...]
Tick Tick presents Montreal (and BTV) goodness: CLUES (Montreal, featuring Alden Penner of the Unicorns and Brendan Reed of Arcade Fire) ELFIN SADDLE (Montreal) NOSEBLEED ISLAND (local) At 143 North Avenue, 8pm, $6-$10 suggested donation Thursday, November 6th Elfin Saddle has come in the past, and also played a memorable show in Stannard on a very smoky december evening as the church's woodstove backdrafted crazily. They have a really creative approach to being a two person band. Clues | Perfect [...]
Who: Clues Location: Montreal(?), Canada elbo.ws Ranking: N/A (not for long!) Thoughts: With stories popping up on esteemed music websites like Pitchfork and Stereogum the mystery that has been surrounding Montreal based band Clues seems like it is all but set to vanish. The "super group", of sorts, is set to release their debut record in 2009 and already appear to be headed for one of the "must

[Continuing the talk about Said the Gramophone's Pop Montreal series of concerts, and the artists thereof.] Those who spent Friday, October 5th at the Ukrainian Federation were rewarded with a whole heatwave of song - enough sweat & steam & beauty to raise a crop of hothouse flowers. Yeasayer were as singular & special as I had dreamed : I watched the audience's eyes go wide. Who are these guys? they murmured, while the band loosed quadrupled hollers, redoubled chants, synth-pad drums and slip-knots of melody. The only thing I'm [...]
Ex-Unicorn Alden Penner debuted his new band at Pop Montreal in the Birks Chapel this past Sunday night. The Secret Unicorns Forum already has the show uploaded in their bootleg section, but the audio quality gets in the way of the songs. Apparently, the band played very loud and the entire experience was "awkward" and "strange." I'm just glad to see Alden making music again. Here's a preview sampler of songs off their new record. I like it. - Clues' preview And here's some fan footage [...]

As I write this, the last few afterparties for Pop Montreal are swaying in the breezy rain, and all the tired happy faces are headed to bed. I was running errands tonight getting ready for the last Bleating Heart Show , and it struck me how hard everyone works at this festival, and how there's a perfect understanding of help and mutual support. It's quite wonderful. I missed the first two Bleating Heart Shows , as I was in a play those nights, so I'm sure Sean will be able to give the [...]

This past Tuesday night, I had the great pleasure of seeing Rilo Kiley live in Orlando, and I can confidently say that they put on a hell of a show. Even if I didn't have a heterosexual bias towards the cutiest of cute, Jenny Lewis, I believe I would say the same thing. The crowd at House of Blues was a good one, and they knew all the songs. It was a special treat when they played "Dejalo" and "Smoke Detector", because they apparently hadn't played those songs for the past few dates of their tour. Also, they [...]
