It's been raining for what seems an entire week. Here's a handful of songs to cheer up our collective waterlogged souls. " Season's Greetings " by What's Up? A tendril of distorted sound sucked lingering smokers and their friends back inside from The Echo's sloped smoker's corral. A man with a ponytail dressed like a turn of the century undertaker in his black 3-piece suit sang with distorted vocals in an unrecognizable language, and played a mysterious wind instrument while his companion—nattily dressed The Bearded Mod—dryly manned some kind of sample board/synth on the almost pitch black stage. They are Hrair Hratchian (the undertaker) and Radwan Moumneh (the mod, a.k.a. Clues' producer), and are called Jerusalem in My Heart. The effect was that of a muezzin calling the [...]

Canadian quasi-super group Clues are playing at the recently opened Independent in Austin on Wednesday night. Not sure what C3 is up to, but it looks like they are maybe trying to nab some big indie acts at their new mid-sized venue. If you want a preview of the show, check out a recent review we did of the band's self-titled album . Doors for the show are at 8pm. Tickets are pretty cheap at $10 . ZACH THAT: Hey Los Angeles readers, tonight, Clues will be playing at the Echo (7PM). I caught them at Spaceland a few months back and I promise, this is a can't miss show at one of the best venues in LA. Tickets are ten bucks. Come and say hello, I'll be in a crazy jacket (grey with black leather, cowboy looking style)...this show is going to be amazing.

At an all ages show at Neumos on Monday night, Phil Elverum, Mt. Eerie's center of gravity, stood behind a white milk crate filled with Mt. Eerie and The Microphones vinyl. Promptly at 9:20, he and his new lineup took the stage to play their debut show as a band. And you could tell they hadn't played live before. The bassist exchanged nervous glances with the mostly inactive keyboardist. The keyboard player's shining moment was when the slight notes she played eked out between excessive reverb and the roar of two drummers, during "Mouth of Sky." This is one [...]
Jukebox is a feature where we ask our favorite artists, bloggers and DJs their opinions on four songs that are currently generating buzz. Then we ask them for songs that we should be buzzing about. This week, we put quarters in the record machine with Jace Krause of Friday Mile...Clues - "Perfect Fit" (mp3)I am not familiar with these guys, and I didn't like this song the first, second, and

Montreal's Clues began in 2007 and is basically a collaboration between Alden Penner (Unicorns) and Brendan Reed (Arcade Fire) with aid from multi-instrumentalists Ben Borden, Lisa Gamble and Nick Scribner. Their new self-titled album is out on Constellation Records . It's a collection of songs dark and moody, lush and memorable, oddly poetic and enigmatic. Art-rock hasn't sounded this good in years. Clues at Noise Pop 2009, from the HAD Archive We've been anxious to get our hands on Clues ' self titled debut ever since we heard news of the band last winter. March's show at Noise Pop served to solidify our excitement, and when the middle of May came around, we snatched up a copy. So what do we make of it? Well, in short, it's largely what we expected. Put differently: it's not a terribly surprising record, but it is [...]

MP3: Clues - Perfect Fit Alden Penner doesn't exactly have to shoot for the stars here. You see, ever since the remaining two members of his last group, The Unicorns, restarted their careers gallivanting around the globe with Islands (a comprehensive failure in my book), he's had little to live up to. He isn't even alone now: fellow Canuck and ex-Arcade-Fire-member Brendan Reed has joined forces with Mr. Penner for their latest project, called Clues . Now with some new material from them, it's become clear who the driving creative [...]

Have you guys heard of the Pop's Bar in the Mission? Well, every 1st and 3rd Tuesday of each month at Pop's Bar on 2800 24th St. in San Francisco, they host a thing called DIARY which is a nostalgic night of 90s emo and pop punk music. Including the likes of Sunny Day Real Estate, Death Cab for Cutie, Saves the Day, The Get Up Kids, Braid, Mineral, Planes Mistaken for Stars, Far and Texas Is the Reason . How freakin' cool is that? Anyway, tonight has our friends at ipickmynose [...]

This week's pitch has been spoken of in whispers and half-truths throughout the interwebs since even before their debut at 2007's Pop Montreal. Clues -- the newest baby of Alden Penner (via the famous-post-split Unicorns ) and Brendon Reed ( Arcade Fire )-- has been burning the midnight oil to produce their much-awaited self-titled debut, which hit the airwaves last week on the 19th despite a long-slanted winter 2008 release date. Up until last week everything Clues-related has been shrouded in a veil of mystery that's somewhat to be expected from the ex-Unicorn: unadvertised [...]

"Clues" is the self-titled debut album for Montreal indie poppers Clues. Brain child of ex-Unicorn Alden Penner and ex-Arcade Fire member Brendan Reed, the quintet includes multi-instrumentalists Ben Borden, Lisa Gamble, and Nick Scribner. Forming in 2007, Clues has established a following despite the use of any social media promotion such as Myspace, Facebook and Twitter. The album's opening track, entiled "Haarp," is reminiscent of early Flaming Lips circa Clouds Taste Metallic. An incomprehensive lyric begins the song but is quickly disrupted by the clash of a sole cymbal followed by rumbling guitar distortion. Penner's falsetto [...]

Clues began building in secret in the summer of 2007, playing a series of un-advertised shows in small Montréal venues. Emerging above-ground in 2008, their first performances elicited passionate responses from both audiences and music media. Clues was founded by Alden Penner and Brendan Reed, both active for years in the Montréal music scene. Alden was one-half of Unicorns, a band that burned bright and fast at the beginning of the century, and Brendan has been a member of a number of groups, including the endless, Endless Forever. In 2008, Clues recruited friends Ben Borden, Lisa Gamble, and [...]

Since the death of the Unicorns in '04, I've been visiting their grave, Who Will Cut Our Hair When We're Gone? , a couple times each year to mourn. Nick Thorburn's Islands have been a nice family friend to grieve with, but there was still a void left unfilled. Foolishly underestimating Alden Penner's contributions to the deceased Canadian pop trio, I saw no satisfaction in sight--until Clues came into my life, that is. Their debut LP makes pop fun again with morbid words pressed right up against fevered drums and watery guitars in a seductive dance of [...]

Photo by Yannick Grandmont Recently, I had been pondering about where the best music this decade, and especially recently, had been coming from internationally. For most of the history of pop music, the UK has been the dominant country in producing the new hits. But around the time Nirvana and Seattle blew up in the '90s, the tide began to turn, although even that decade still saw plenty of great acts spring up from the UK (i.e. Radiohead ) to compete. Now as this decade begins to close, it is hard not to agree that [...]
