Are Bloggers Journalists? Let's ask Thomas Jefferson by: Christopher B. Daly Who is a journalist? In America, where we don't license journalists, that is not always a simple question. Lately, the issue has come up in a new light because of the claims made by people who post Web logs. Bloggers came to prominence during the 2004 election, often criticizing or correcting the "mainstream media." Recently, the first blogger in history was issued credentials to cover the White House. And just last month, a California judge was asked to decide whether bloggers who write [...]

Just a few quick notes to jump start your Haligonian weekend. Tonight @ Gus Pub here in Halifax, Kate Maki , Nathan Lawr and Erin Costelo will treat the wise people who show up to three sets of fantastic music. Will I be one of them you ask? No, because Shane's wife plans dinner parties on the wrong nights. Nathan's record was in or Top 10 Canadian LPs last year, and the way he and Kate play together is something special. It's a shame to miss [...]

I feel a little bad billing this show as only The Coast, but typing the names of the other bands in the title would make it uber long, and in reality it was The Coast I dragged myself downtown on a rainy Thursday night to see. The Toronto quartet was sandwiched between fellow Torontonians The Matavaras and Halifax odd squad Heavy Meadows. It was a slightly strange mix, considering the different styles of the three bands, but overall I think the smallish crowd was pretty pleased with the evening. The Matavaras kicked things off, and although [...]

The Coast are billed as one of the hardest working bands in Toronto's indie music scene, and a quick look at their touring schedule seems to back this up. This Thursday night, those of us in Halifax will benefit from the The Coast's extensive touring as they play the Marquee (along with The Matavaras and Heavy Meadows ). We've covered The Coast on the hill before, and when I say we I mean mainly the Ack, as he reviewed their debut EP , and previewed their latest album Expatriate . [...]

As usual, a few new tunes I'm digging. (Sorry, I just picked up Nada Surf's Lucky -- I'm aware it's not technically "new". Sue me.) And as always, an oldie you should be shot for not knowing. "You, Me, & The Bourgeoisie" - The Submarines "Pork and Beans" - Weezer "The Golden Age" - Bridges and Powerlines "Nueva York" - The Coast "Long Walk Home" - Radars [...]

Before I get into all of this, be sure to enter our Ragged/Filter contest - we're giving out a bunch of free goodies, so don't miss out! Now, on to our mix. Our third installment of the weekend mix is a particularly good one and includes a lot of music from the UK, per usual. You may have perused our new music this week and noticed we were talked up Tokyo Police Club quite a bit. No album this year hit me quite the same as this one - [...]
photo from The Coast's myspace by Jess Baumung. This Saturday (26 April) Julie Doiron is gracing the Grad Club stage. You know and love her and I'm not going to be talking about her today. What I want to do is suggest that you get to the show early to check out the opening band, The [...]

You know what would be the saddest thing in the world? A song which would make fish cry. Underwater. Can you even imagine how sad that would be? Fish, crying, tears. Tears, people: under water! Actual tears flowing under water! That would have to be one incredibly sad, depressing, soul-crushing song. To have fish cry tears. Under water. I can't emphasise that enough. However, that sad song is not Nueva York by The Coast. Au contraire; it is a stirring, diverse track [...]

Photo by Jamie Campbell I've been awaiting Expatriate , the debut full-length from The Coast ever since I first saw them live and subsequently heard their self-titled EP , and what's interesting is that while the full-length doesn't disappoint, it also doesn't sound much at all like their old work. It's not a drastic reinvention - there's greater variety in tempo and texture but the bedrock of shimmering guitars and plaintive vocals still remains - but it's enough that your first thought after listening may well [...]

From Expatriate, the highly anticipated debut full-length album from Toronto's The Coast , this song is a dose of pure pop-tastic gold that will be in your head for weeks. Serene guitar lines, a driven beat and an unstoppable chorus make "Killing Off Our Friends" the sweetest case of mulitiple homicide that you're likely to hear anytime soon. The Coast - Killing Off Our Friends Hear more from Expatriate at The Coast's Myspace page or grab a [...]

DOWNLOAD: The Coast - Tightrope (MP3) DOWNLOAD: The Coast - Nueva York (MP3) the coast The Coast was touted as one of the acts to watch in 2008 by Canada's national music monthly Exclaim and Toronto's Eye Weekly, thanks to the buzz that continued to grow as the band toured extensively across North America last year, playing alongside such acts as Tokyo Police Club, The Dears, Sam Roberts, The French Kicks, and a coveted CMJ showcase with Foals, A Place [...]
Herohill has been a fan of the Toront-anglophile band The Coast for a long time. We featured them on the hottest bands of Ontario mix as well as a nice review of their self-titled EP . At the time I was impressed by the consistency of the record and how the anthems shimmered and I think they displayed the potential to be huge. So what are they up to now? Well, April 1st marks the release of their new record - Expatriate - and Exclaim! is debuting [...]

Photo by Joe Fuda Not everything noteworthy in Canadian music is happening this week . Indeed, fans of Cancon-qualifying music should have next week circled on their calendar as it marks a week full of Forest City Lovers -ing. Tuesday marks the release of their sophomore album Haunting Moon Sinking though it's also a debut, in a sense, as it's the first to feature the Forest City Lovers as a full band rather than a project led by singer/songwriter Kat Burns and friends as was found on [...]

So the sabbatical I've been taking from seeing live music for the past few weeks has evidently done me a world of good because not only was my narcolepsy under control before heading into Saturday night's triple-bill at the El Mocambo, but I was actually eager to get out and see some bands play. And the lineup that was going to ease me back into things was a varied one. You had the headliners - Syracuse's Ra Ra Riot - whom I covered last week , Toronto's own The Coast , whom I've covered [...]
