Kai Fish is best known as bassist for Mystery Jets , a band near and dear to my heart. But you're probably not aware that Fish has written for Mark Ronson and the Count and Sinden (I certainly wasn't). So based on this, I guess it should not be too much of a surprise that he has decided to use his considerable talents to write and record a solo album. 'Life in Monochrome' is scheduled to drop on the 26th of September on Music of Wolves, and to get people ready [...]

"This..Is..Cobalt.." opens proceedings for this exceedingly good track which is yards away from any slight Rudyard Kipling references. Techy and overly cool in its build, it powers on onward to a progressive trance wonder that'll have you marvelling "how on earth did they do that?," and throwing down your Walkers crisps packets like you would do at a David Blaine gathering. Touches of excellent phasers and electronic flows make this enjoyable even more, so feel free to turn this one up even louder than your subwoofers are currently pumping! Positive awe! [...]

Photo gallery of Wino, Scott Kelly and Man's Gin at Mercury Lounge on Saturday, February 12, 2011. People familiar with performances by St. Vitus, Neurosis, Spirit Caravan or Shrinebuilder are used to triple-checking for their hearing protection prior to leaving the house, but Scott Weinrich and Scott Kelly went for the stripped-down approach for a short tour showcasing their songwriting and singing with just an acoustic guitar instead of a wall of amps and a floor full of distortion pedals. Wino showcased songs from his new LP Adrift, [...]

HOT NEW ISHT ALERT. Vancouver's, No Gold have a new album coming out on Unfamiliar Records (Brasstronaut, Japandroids, Makeout Videotape, RatTail) on my birthday, Feb 22, (plz send me presents). No Gold - Rainforts They play the Music Waste / Olio (ahhhh, friends, so kewt) SXSW Fundraiser at our beloved, queer / everyone, skid, hipster friendly, highly controversial, fave east side joint, THE COBALT. Also playing, Winnie besties, Teen Daze and Basketball. Look for all these LOLcats at the SXSW's. [...]
Torche are the latest metal band to be featured on Fox News' Red Eye program, following in the footsteps of Gwar's Oderus Urungus and Cobalt's Phil McSorely. The difference between Torche and those dudes, though, is that Mike Huckabee - former governor of Arkansas, United States presidential candidate, and now self-proclaimed "doom metal expert" - [...]
As our friends over at BrooklynVegan just announced, Kirk Fisher of Buzzov*en fame is playing a surprise show at Union Pool tonight as K. Lloyd, the singer's acoustic incarnation. This one is minus The Disciples (Jimmy Bower and Brian Patton), but PLUS Erik Wunder of Cobalt/Man's Gin fame. Should be sufficiently dark and dreary for this dismal Tuesday...
Cobalt are known for one thing. That thing, sadly, is not balls-out, epic black 'n' roll. No, it's that frontman Phil McSorley is in the Army, brought to the attention of many by his appearance on Fox News' (um, surprisingly metal-sympathetic) Red Eye. And I'm obviously not knocking that - writing CD reviews in my [...]

Stand up to the Sgt. Phil.
Okay, so in case you somehow don't know, Cobalt vocalist Phil McSorley's day job is being a sergeant in the U.S. army, which automatically gives him +10,000,000 street cred points. Little wonder that the band's latest album, Gin, received accolades up the ass - there's no way in fuck you can accuse Cobalt of being [...]
On Friday, we brought you the rather sad news of the passing of singer-songwriter Vic Chesnutt who died at the all too young age of 45. Chesnutt's name is familiar to jamband fans as he had a longstanding relationship with fellow Athens-based act Widespread Panic over the years, releasing two fantastic albums with the Southern jam-titans under the moniker Brute - 1995's Nine High A Pallet and 2002's Co-Balt - both of which contain songs that remain in Panic's live repertoire. [...]

Every year I'm tempted to -- and sometimes do -- say "this has been a great year for metal." It's a toss-away idea: If you consume the genre obsessively, every year seems sort of great, the chaff turning fuzzy and falling into the background, the favorites cementing themselves in your brain and eardrums. Or maybe I'm just an optimist. Whatever the case, it was hard coming up with a Top 30 Of 2009: I liked a ton of stuff, though I didn't love all of it. The last two years gave me clear No. 1s, albums I saw at the [...]
They say life is timing and that timing is mostly luck. Sinatra would add that luck is rarely a lady, and truly she's been a monster bitch since the release of new records by Devin Townsend and Between The Buried And Me. Both clear contenders for top 2009 album honors, Addicted and The Great Misdirect [...]
The fellas in Cobalt are angry at Garden of Exile records. How angry? Very, very, very angry. Here's a posting from their MySpace page: The swine that run Garden of Exile records have long been given the opportunity to send us the Eater of Birds LP's that we are owed, but have failed to do so [...]
I was sick (on my day off, even) yesterday, so I kept the internerding to a minimum, but here's the weekly listings, in the nick of time. So, it's with some sadness that I compile the weekly listings today, as this week marks the end of one of the most important venues in the city, the Cobalt. The bar's welcomed the kind of music that's mostly un-welcomed by most other "legitimate" venues in town, so it's sort of fitting that Fake Jazz Wednesday plays it out tomorrow night. If you can't make it down for Boosh tonight or [...]
