from Facebook We are deeply saddened today to hear that Donna Summer passed away this morning after an extensive battle with cancer. She was 63 and was finishing up a new album. Though she may now be apart from us, Summer will have an eternal legacy, as she paved the road for so much of disco and pop music throughout the 70s and 80s. With timeless hits like "I Feel Love", "Hot Stuff", "She Works Hard For The Money", and "Last Dance", she will not be forgotten. To celebrate [...]
Hey Cleveland! Instead of going out the night before Thanksgiving and getting blitzed at some bar with your buds, why don't you go out, get blitzed at a bar with your buds and take in some Cleveland Rock 'N' Roll. You do have three quality events to choose from. There's This Way Out's Anniversary Party at the Beachland Tavern with Filmstrip, Village Bicycle, and 45 Spider. While on the West Side there's a free show at Now That's Class with Cobra Verde, Founding Fathers and Exploding Lies, and the Herzog [...]

Cobra Verde - Temptation [New Order] | zs

With West Fest , Folk and Roots and other goings on this weekend, it would be easy to overlook Sweet Apple at the Abbey Saturday. That would be a shame. The band is a couple of guys from Cleveland's Cobra Verde , the great guitar shredder J. Mascis of Dinosaur Jr. and Dave Sweetapple from Witch (a hard rock band that features Mascis on drums). The sound? Try to imagine Cobra Verde crossed [...]

When bands like The White Stripes and The Hives began bubbling to the mainstream surface around the turn of the century and the term "garage rock" was being bantered around as hip currency despite its obvious retro connotations, there was still a whole swath of bands left largely ignored. It is this segment of the underground that Eric Davidson, the lead larynx of the New Bomb Turks and longtime music scribe for a number of publications, examines in his new book, We Never Learn: The Gunk Punk Undergut, 1988–2001 [...]
Introducing Sweet Apple , a rock guitar supergroup made up of Dinosaur Jr 's J. Mascis, Tim Parnin and John Petkovic from Cobra Verde and Dave Sweetapple from Witch . The band released their debut album just this week and 'Do You Remember' is the first single from it. Let us know what you think.

Filed under: Concerts and Tours "We only played our first practice two days ago," boasted Sweet Apple lead singer John Petkovic, grinning widely at his new bandmates, including alt-rock legend J. Mascis . "And this is our last show ever," he joked. "We got together for no reason and we're breaking up for no reason." That's not true, of course. Petkovick and his Cobra Verde bandmate Tim Parnin joined forces with Mascis and his Witch bandmate out of a shared [...]

Let's face it, everybody loves that nostalgic sound from the 90s, and the recent revival of J Mascis in the past several years can't hurt. So, we're excited for his new band, along with several member of Cobra Verde , Sweet Apple to release their debut Love & Desperation on April 20th. This new single is ridiculously good, and it has that dirty pop feeling only Mascis seems to perfect. It's time you took a listen. Download: Sweet Apple - I've Got [...]

Yes, friends: I know you've stopped keeping count, but it seems J. Mascis has started another band. This one bears the juicy, succulent name "Sweet Apple." Can't you just taste it already? No? Well, you will April 20, when the group releases its debut album, Love & Desperation (Tee Pee). Until then, here's a taste: Listen to the fuzzy, power-pop riffage of single "Do You Remember" on Sweet Apple's MySpace page . As Prefix reports, Mascis formed the band with Cobra Verde frontman John Petkovic and Dave [...]

Modey Lemon are one of my favorite bands to emerge from the overcrowded scrap heap that produced a bunch of great garage-rock out of Detroit, Pittsburgh and other blue-collar communities - think Cobra Verde , The White Stripes , Whirlwind Heat , The Sights - and a lot of not-so-great garage-rock - think The Black Keys . "You Bug Me" is a formative 7-inch for the group, blasted to [...]
J. Mascis (Dinosaur Jr.) and various old dudes from Cobra Verde and Witch have joined forces to form Sweet Apple. The results are Foo Fighters-esque rock n' roll. It's the kind of music that I'll never sit and listen to at home but would be lots of fun at a party or in a bar. Take a bite of Sweet Apple (see what I did there?) and let me know what you think.Link:Sweet Apple on Pitchfork

As the story goes, Cobra Verde's 2008 release, Haven't Slept a Year, took its title from the period during which Cobra Verde's lead singer, John Petkovic, suffered through insomnia while dealing with a dying mother. And as the story continues, that Cobra Verde album wasn't the only work which came to fruitiion during that difficult time in Petkovic's life. After his mother's death, Petkovic headed east, to New England, and met up with Dinosaur Jr's J Mascis and Witch's Dave Sweetapple. While the purpose of the trip wasn't to write and then record a new album, [...]

Image From Here I don't know, maybe it's just me but it seems to me that things move at such a rapid speed these days that I can't keep up. Everything is instant and moves so quickly. The days fly by in a blur and it just astounds me how time passes so quickly. I can't believe it is summer already for God's sake. And we have everything available, ready at our fingertips. The social networking tools we have are just incredible. There's MySpace, Facebook, Twitter, email and tools like StumbleUpon [...]

A few odds and ends to start off your week: * Bill Fox played a sold out show at The Beachland Tavern this past Saturday night. Technically, he was the middle act on the bill, opening for his brother Tommy's reggae band, Broke by Monday, but, tell that to the crowd. It was the second time I'd seen him since he resumed playing out earlier this year, and unlike the first show he played at the Tavern , which had all the atmosphere of a solemn, Sunday service, Fox seemed to be [...]
