If we've learned anything in nearly four years of obsessive music consumption, it's that names mean things. It's only been two months, so we're still working on the title for Stash , but as for Cock and Swan, that is, cocky and soigne, the meaning is pretty clear. And not necessarily the opposites themselves, but the tension between them . It is too subtle by half, so give it one more full listen than you're accustomed to. Those listeners familiar with their other, more un-unplugged material might dread the hard right turn into brick and mortar. Don't. [...]

photo by Angel Ceballos Every Monday through Friday, we deliver a different song as part of our Song of the Day podcast subscription. This podcast features exclusive KEXP in-studio performances, unreleased tracks, and recordings from independent artists that our DJs think you should hear. Every Friday we feature a local band from Seattle and the rest of the Northwest. Today's selection, featured on the Morning Show with John Richards, is "Raging Chisel" by Cock & Swan from the 2012 album Stash on Lost Tribe Sound . [...]

Preview Cock and Swan's forthcoming album Stash , due out on in April on Lost Tribe Sound. The track is named "Sneak Close" and - while we do our best to eschew the word "departure," opting instead for something more akin to "growth" - the hairpin turn is impossible not to mention. Stash is a place of muffled tones, nodding tempos, tangible percussion, fragile monochrome vocals, and the harmonic imprecision of all things acoustic. It is immediate, earthy, and gently orchestral in its own skin. Watch for the full review as April draws [...]

Being that my typical night consists of hitting the sack at around 10pm, and that my new radio show is Friday nights from 10pm to midnight, I figured that my second show would center around the theme of sleep . So I pieced together a playlist of bedroom pop, chill wave, dreamy shoegaze and what I've dubbed as psychedelic ambiance. I took over for Stuarto just after 10 with a brief description of my first track, which I don't believe made it on air. The switch-over was a bit rushed [...]

The problem with so-called best-of lists, is that they are really just a collection of items organized based on experience and time, in that there will be plenty of albums heard the following year and beyond that will hold just as much weight as these we dub as "Best." So, as of right now, at this particular time in the tail end of 2010 and the first moments of 2011, these albums are the best. There's no question about it; it will change. My next list (which I've started, but may take a while to publish) is [...]

Congratulations to the PacNW for another stellar year in music. It really outdid itself. There were quite a few bands from our region who received obscene amounts of attention this annum and even rippled the national scene with their respective records. Unfortunately, not many of them ended up on my list. Despite this cultural discrepancy, however, the bands and albums listed below represent what I believe to be the very best in Northwest music that you could've listened to in twenty-ten. Or not; I dunno, I'm just one dude. Feliz Navidad! . [...]

If there was one "scene" I watched with great intent this past year, it would be the seemingly unprecedented barrage of hazy electro-pop releases that made their way onto the internet and into people's hearts/portable media devices. I've literally never listened to so much non-rock music as I have in the past 8 or 9 months. "Chillwave", as the genre has become known, was a divisive, early year buzz topic, created and championed the year before by (those danged) writers and bloggers to the dismay, chagrin, and annoyance of many. To others, it was simply a cozy conduit by [...]

After a triumphant 2010, that included the release of their acclaimed debut LP, Weathervanes, Queen's popular indie band, The Freelance Whales, are keeping fans engaged into the waning months of 2010 with a new song, "Enzymes." At first, it doesn't really sound like the FW; the sound is more heavily infused with an indie pop [...] Read more, get songs or stream the entire mix on Indie Rock Cafe

Must ... resist ... urge ... to make ... immature ... jokes ... about ... band ... names... And to be honest with you, we’re almost above that, and feel better because of it. Because why would we want to make jokes about Cock and Swan – they’re great. The Washington based duo have provided the kind of electronica we want to listen to all day. This Cock and Swan track, ‘Stash’ , is taken from their album ‘Unrecognize’, out through Dandelion Gold. There are some beautiful vocals over the heavy electronic sound and fat beats, and [...]

Have a hankering for some abstract, analog synth? Then you may just wanna check out the Bothell, Washington based pair calling themselves Cock and Swan . Band members Ola and Johnny, who've been making music together since 2003, combine Ola's soft and muffled vocals with their slow and ambient synths mildly reminiscent of Boards of Canada and sporadic, trippy drum beats to create their experimental sound. Their debut LP titled Unrecognize is out now and can be purchased from their bandcamp site here . In the mean time, check them [...]

In case you hadn't noticed, lately I've been kind of swept up in some of Seattle's prevalence-gaining electro-introspectors. I told you about Cock & Swan 's witchy new album Unrecognition and it's buzzing, austere sincerity. I told you about U.S.F. and their set at Chop Suey supporting Ryan McPhun the Ruby Suns (their original name; makes more sense, huh?). U.S.F.'s watery tribal-trop record Ocean Sunbirds is one of the most deftly composed and interest-piquing records I've heard all year. I told you about the electronic vagabond [...]

Maybe I haven't been paying attention (which...c'mon), but there seems to be a dearth of good bedroom electronica here in the ol' Puget Sound region. Am I wrong? I suppose there's the current curl of the semi-experimental chillwavers, spearheaded locally by the likes of U.S.F. , Alaskas , and Big Spider's Back . But to me, that aesthetic represents a more freak-folkish/glo-fi means to a parallel end (think Strawberry Jam or Psychic Chasms) . Cock & Swan , whose avian name-I'll admit-excites me, just might have something unique and [...]

One of my favorite parts about FensePost is being able to follow the journey a band takes over time. It's been a few years since Cock And Swan debuted with Noon Hum , and their progression from that album to Unrecognize , out this week on their own Dandelion Gold label, has been tremendous. Noon Hum was an absolute delight, and looking back it's easy to recognize that it certainly yielded great things. Where Cock And Swan have changed most is [...]

Tonight I hit the kitchen to compile the second FensePost podcast, or FenseCast, while cooking up one of my signature dishes: spicy steak enchiladas with homemade sauce. For desert, a delicious slice of gluten free cake courtesy Andi (the girlfriend), whose photo you can see above. Unlike the first podcast, this one had a range of bands that stemmed into several genres rather than focusing on garage rock and pop. Within I reminisce on one of my favorite bands of all time, occasionally hover around bedroom pop, and pass along one imperative ingredient in my homemade enchilada [...]
