Musicians may just want to skip this anecdote and go straight the download. In 2007, four dudes out of O.C./Long Beach calling themselves CoCo B's unleashed an album of brash, hooky guitar-bass-drums indie-rock that earned deserving comparisons to the Replacements, Guided by Voices and Archers of Loaf. I was, and remain, crazy for "I Live in L.A." and "Modern Lover," and the noise made it to the ears of folks in the record industry. What happened? Not much. I was told that CoCo B's, who'd been a band called Retriever prior to that 1) [...]
>> A world in which Joey Sweeney doesn't have an active band just feels weird. Or at least it feels weird in a different way from a world in which Mr. Sweeney does have an active band. We came up listening to his songs, going to the shows of his various bands ( Barnabys , The Joey Sweeney Rock Band , and so forth), and then when he got himself growed up sometime during the last decade it seemed like he had finally put music down after shelving the quasi-eponymous The Trouble With Sweeney . So [...]

Hometown post rock heros Collections Of Colonies Of Bees (COCOBs pronounced like stingingly delicious Cocoa Bees haha) just fired off the lead track from their upcoming LP, Giving. Every recent write up I have read about these cats has named dropped Bon Iver, Justin Vernon and their collabo in the tre excellente Volcano Choir project. I completely understand the logic behind it, but I feel after putting it down for 13 years they stand on their own. COCOBs jam. That being said, if the connection to one of music biggest stars it what the doctor ordered to turn people on [...]

>> You'll be excused for mistaking Tre Orsi 's exceptional new rocker for a new, more aggressive track from California-based indie concern CoCo B's . Or even an old track from the late, lamented Lefty's Deceiver . But no, in fact Tre Orsi is Tre Orsi, and you will likely start hearing the name more and more with the release of the Denton, Texas-based indie rock act's debut full length. The collection is titled Devices + Emblems , and it will be released digitally by the rock-solid Comedy Minus One label June 8; the [...]

>> [PHOTO CREDIT: Liam Henry] Leeds-based power trio Dinosaur Pile-Up 's debut single "My Rock N' Roll" will be released Dec. 8 in a limited edition of 500 by fledgling label Friends Vs. Records. Whoever wrote the promo blurb at Rough Trade is brilliantly funny -- observe: "[ Dinosaur Pile-Up 's] songs are proving very popular among people who like to go out to watch rock bands." The flipside of the planned single is the original demo for the percolating gem "Love Is A Boat And We're Sinking," which was floating around the Internerdzzz earlier this fall [...]

Gas prices are through the roof but that's not stopping me from heading out to this awesome show. Mezzanine Owls and The Pity Party are playing TONIGHT at Alex's Bar down in Long Beach w/ Coco B' s at The Secret 6 's record release show. A lineup that good is deserving of my rations. Mezzanine Owls just opened for Swervedriver on May 29th at The Filmore and The Pity Party just returned [...]

Coco B'sWith all the recent REM news, here are some mp3s from one of their musical descendants, California-based Coco B's. They've got a very 90s-ish, Lemonheads, alt-rock sounded, but updated. They couple their strong sense of melody with a certain...

Release Date: 03.18.08 If a band is just a rock band (with the word "just" carrying all the up sides and downsides you can imagine), and they're only crime is also their only ambition (to play rock music), how much credit should that earn them from a reviewer? On the other hand, how much more credit does a reviewer give a band that keeps everyone guessing stylistically? Is "changing it up" artistic expression or just A.D.D.? How much more credit do we give to naked ambition, and how do we determine one thing is more [...]

We get hundreds of press releases on a daily basis to our inbox. We love the music and the press agents and labels are sending us truly awesome stuff but it's really hard writing about each and every cool band. So I wanted to share some quick notes with you guys while I listen to music. I have to add that it's quite refreshing to see that the promoters out there are doing a great job sending us music that really connects with what The Plugg is all about. Thanks! [...]

Future Sounds loves the Southern CA band, COCO B'S , and are enjoying watching the word spread about them everywhere (NME, The Hills, KROQ) since first discovering them for FS26. I just got a remixed version of the song we were able to place on the CD of ' Modern Lovers' , done by HALF TIGER , and here it is. DOWNLOAD IT HERE . (mp3) alt=rss

I generally spend about 5 minutes per week reading non-Canadian music sites (and that's on a good week), so this may be a stupid question, but...did I miss the brief moment where Coco B's were the biggest band in the world? Hype Machine says I didn't, and if that's true, then I'm shocked. The band's self-titled full-length is full of exceptionally catchy, well-made power-pop, and I would've assumed that either a) bloggers would've already annointed the band with Next Big Thing status, b) some teen-targeting TV show would've picked up every song [...]

I didn't write a Finally Friday this week, because Thursday night we were out late at a show and I was a mess the next day on three and a half hours of sleep. So instead, enjoy these Sunday morning tidbits. The Dears are currently working on their follow-up to 2006's Gang of Losers , which was featured on my best of list. In the words of Natalia Yanchak , keyboardist and wife of lead singer Murray Lightburn , "this record has been busting out from [...]

My early morning Sunday walk around town consists of a cup of coffee and the iPod attached to my ears. I always use this time to enjoy the outside and listen to new music. I came across the band Coco B's recently and really liked what I heard. Figured I should share the musical goodness with everyone. Modern Lover Hot Pantz I Live in L.A.
