Photo by Jeremy D. Larson Ty Segall 's latest album Goodbye Bread received a lot of well-deserved critical attention earlier this year, but in a way, it left his live show in limbo. The 24-year-old San Franciscan had been bashing out energetic, mosh-filled shows built from his garage stomp catalog and a few well-placed covers. But Goodbye Bread is a thoughtful record- not slower or less energetic, exactly, but one where he leaves himself more room for vocal nuance and doesn't scream quite as often. It's a sizable aesthetic jump from [...]
Influential garage rock trio The Gories are reunited (again!) for a North American tour, and they played their first Chicago shows in quite a long time at the Empty Bottle last Friday and Saturday night. Well, we have some great footage from their Saturday show courtesy of John Yingling of Gonzo Chicago . The video begins with a short clip of Chicago rockers CoCoComa who opened the show along with Hollows . Check it out below: httpvh://www.youtube.com/watch ?v=ndDGiM8EhL8

Best Coast: photo by Michael Ligon This year's NXNE was arguably the best Toronto's had since it's exception in 1994, at the very least the best I've experienced since I started regularly attending the festival in 2004. Although the festival officially kicked off on Wednesday June 16, it was the next day[Thursday June 17] that the festival kicked into high gear with most people, like myself, beginning their venue hopping. Having booked off June 17 and 18 from work, I devoted some of my free time on the 17th to finally give [...]

Finally I am back home in Ottawa. For those living under a rock, I went to Toronto to attend this year's NXNE Music Festival . This was my second time going to this and I usually have a fun time at NXNE. I will review mostly from Wednesday and Thursday's events. This will be a long post. For Wednesday, despite the confusion and missing out some shows that I would want to have checked out. I only managed to see one. I went to the Velvet [...]
Sorry if I haven't been up to date with my fun times at NXNE. I have been internet less since Wednesday. Found out the place I am staying does not have internet. I went to the Polaris Prize Longlist Ceremonies After the Nacho House The show at The Great Hall with Friendo, Demon's Claws, Women, The Best Coast, Cococoma and Thee Oh Sees. Here are the photos:
Here is part 2 of who I or you should check out at NXNE in Toronto. So this will be Thursday night's event. It is going to be busy insane Thursday at NXNE. A hard decision to choose on who to see badly. Let's check out who will be playing. Found out that from Thursday to Sunday there is going to be a " Live in Bellwoods " picnic series at Trinity Bellwoods Park. It is present by The Musebox and Humble Empire. [...]

There are only a handful of Chicago street fests that really do a good job of booking music. This weekend's Do Division fest is one. There are two stages, one curated by Empty Bottle and other by House Call Entertainment, the guys who book Subterranean and Beat Kitchen. Headliners Saturday are Yacht and the Hood Internet. Sunday's closers are the Night Marchers and Jason Isbell (formerly of Drive-By Truckers). Other acts include Pelican, Headlights, Poison Arrows, Sybris and CoCoComa. [...]

Finally, the start of Chicago's summer festival season is upon us as the Do-Division Street Fest kicks off tomorrow! Lets just hope the rain doesn't spoil the fun. What's that? You're one of those poor souls who works during the weekend? I feel for you, brother! Luckily, there are quite a few more awesome shows around town this weekend including CAVE at the Hideout , Yakuza at the Beat Kitchen , Toro y Moi at the Empty Bottle and much more! Lets get [...]
"I'm gonna smash this AIR CONDITIONING! What am I, seeing Transformers ? It's July. I'm seeing a summer movie with that blowin' in my face?" -- Tom, venting his rage about the blockbuster blast in the studio "The unpledgers are sinners in the hand of an angry God. Which is the way God should be. Angry all the time. Right? Isn't that what we want from God? Mad at us?" -- Tom, contemplating the prickly persona of the other Lord of Living Lightning "I thought [...]

Like Loud Loop Press, the Do-Division Street Fest and Sidewalk Sale likes to keep things local. From the food to the vendors, right down to the bands that play, the focus is directly on Chicago. This year's fest, held Saturday and Sunday, June 5th & 6th on Division between Ashland and Levitt, will have two stages booked by Empty Bottle Presents and Subterranean / House Call Entertainment chock full of great Chicago bands. Among those recruited to perform are heavy [...]
Two-day passes for the Atlanta Mess-Around are still available

Before we get to the shows, a reminder that Loud Loop Radio will be back on the air tomorrow, Saturday, January 30, at 3 p.m. until 5 p.m. on Radio DePaul . Lets get to it, shall we? EARTH PROGRAM One of our 10 Chicago Bands To Watch In 2010 , Earth Program will celebrate their record release show for INVADE! in style with a killer show at Ronny's tonight. If you've never [...]
The hits keep-a-comin' on Goner this year and the second release from Chicago's CoCoComa is no exception. With their brash garage rock spilling over with pop charm, this is no lo-fi bit of scuzz and fuzz but a fully formed force of rock n' roll. Things Are Not All Right brings a bit of epic, fist-pumping fun back to the forum and it doesn't let up through any of its 10 tracks. It's everything you could possibly be looking for in under 30 minutes; clanging guitars, huge choruses and a roll of organ swelling like a seasick [...]

Three reasons to go see CoCoComa tonight at the Empty Bottle : 1. Of all the new wave of garage bands they are one of the few mostly interested in just bringing straight forward, up-tempo rockers a la The Music Machine or The Sonics. 2. I think guitarist Lisa Roe is secretly the 3rd Deal sister. 3. They were on a local public access kid's show called Chicagogo and it [...]
CoCoComa from Chicago I received an email this morning from a long time PR contact. She use to be with Cornerstone way back and then moved to Vice Records for a long time where we constantly heard about this wild and crazy band called the Black Lips. The next move for her was to Pitchfork to [...]
"I would have also paired up George Jones and a ticket refund counter." -- Tom, adding some visuals to the surreal "We Go Together" video montage "Okay, write down your predilection and then you'll tell me what it is after I say what it is." -- Marky Ramone, challenging Tom to guess his big announcement "You didn't say nothin' about the 1/8th notes on the high hat, how fast they are." -- Marky Ramone, lamenting an omission in Tom's critique of his drumming "You do Marky Ramone's throat lozenges, [...]

Download : CoCoComa - "(Tryin' To) Read My Mind" Download : CoCoComa - "Premonition" Besides having one of the most awesome album covers of last year (which provides the image at the top of this post), Chicago garage-rock band CoCoComa have also delivered an incredibly tight album of whip-smart anthems for those who are frustrated with the jobs, their significant others, and their lives. CoCoComa was released last month on Goner records . It's a shame that High Fidelity [...]
