So reticent, reclusive, and resultantly anonymous are Gauntlet Hair that when they swing by to hammer in an ear or two it's almost worth hiking to whichever far-flung nook it may be that they've been booked into to in turn wreck the crap out of just to witness firsthand who the enigmatic duo behind the sepia-doused Instagram snaps on their rather rudimentary website really are. Tonight the outlying cranny is Dalston's Shacklewell Arms, where Novella are unleashing a fierce grunge revival like it's last month all over again . They this time [...]

Last night we swooned to Glasvegas' Ice Cream Van onboard Bristol's Thekla , and keeping things cold and creamy, today we finally got round to spinning Ice Cream, the first glimpse into Battles' forthcoming LP Gloss Drop, scheduled for an early June release on Warp . Proving there's a healthy existence after the departure of Tyondai Braxton, the track, featuring pelvic thruster Matias Aguayo is a buoyant affair, coming across more or less as athletic afrobeat. Or Coconot tumble dried, churned up with Graceland. Pick your flavour, whatever, stream below now. [...]

Taies: Jamie Wieck Coconot - Tao

Everytime I go back to Desayuno Continental I regret not giving it a much higher rating, but I guess that's one of the many drawbacks regarding ratings. Good thing this is only a blog, and we get chances to redeem ourselves in some way or another, I'm hoping to do so by including their single "Bañadores" into our features. It's my second favorite piece from Extraperlo's first album, which also includes the orgasmic "Las Palmeras del Amor" and a bunch of very cool beach-ready chants circling around El Guincho's tricky pop allies including [...]

Pablo Díaz-Reixa is.. . El Guincho - Contabas Indios En La Piscin a Coconot - Miles De Ojos

DESAYUNO CONTINENTAL, EXTRAPERLO Mushroom Pillow, Spain *** 1/2 Rating: 77 By Carlos Reyes Extraperlo is the latest band coming out of Spain dressing pop with tropicalia and thinking vocals should not overtake or suspend its surroundings. They follow the sun and breeze of El Guincho's Alegranza! , the ideals of Coconot's Cosa Astral , and the techno emblematic of Joe [...]

Wavves is the one-man project of distortion architect Nathan Williams, or as I call him, No Age Jr. No Age is a good reference point for Wavves, as both groups consist of skateboarding SoCal dudes who appreciate noise-damaged pop. Williams' eponymous debut comes replete with Brian Wilson vocal harmonies, seriously hummable melodies, and swells of screaming, treble-saturated feedback. Sure, that recipe sounds like Psychocandy, but since the Jesus and Mary Chain could never follow that album up themselves, I'm cool with other bands trying to do that. And Williams knows exactly what he's doing, as all the song titles [...]

Two tracks that I'll play on the radio show this week, that I want to share with you a bit before. Download Coconot - El Final Del Sonido Tropical Coming out of Barcelona, Coconot is a band/project that Pablo Díaz-Reixa, also known as El Guincho , was doing before fully getting into his solo effort. Coconot's album is overall less experimental or electronic than Alegranza and might be closer to the sound of their first EP than Guincho's sampling project. That song is outstanding on the album [...]

While Pablo Díaz-Reixa was blowing up all over the indie world as El Guincho with his much-adored debut Alegranza! , his original musical project Coconut (with Cristian Subirà and Jens Neumaier ) was left somewhat in the dust. Like the sample-heavy songs on the Guinch debut, Pablo's work with Coconut combined tropicalia, afro-beat, and elements of Krautrock in songs that were compiled for Coconut's 2006 debut Novo Tropicalismo Errado . Also like El Guincho's solo work, Coconut's music bears much resemblance to the Panda Bear / [...]

OKAY GUYS, this tropical stuff has been taking over my life and I need to lock it down. Not that any obsessions with High Places, Wavves, Beaches, Holy Shit, Abe Vigoda, El Guincho, Lucky Dragons, or any of the below artists who channel a similar beach/sun god are going to end any time soon, but seriously, what's with all the palm trees in my headphones? All the polyrhythms and bubbles, they're all like that picture up the top there and it's a bit of an overload for this blog and my iTunes and I'm seeking and island, oh, wait, no, [...]

Well before Pablo Díaz-Reixa (a.k.a. El Guincho ) released his solo debut, Alegranza , and was propelled into the international scene, he formed the band Coconot with Cristian Subirà and Jens Neumaier . In 2005 they released their first album, Novo Tropicalismo Errado , which took krautrock-influenced sounds with lo-fi punk sensibilites, and cloaked them in the rhythms and melodies of Latin America, the Caribbean and Spain. And now, as El Guincho prepares for his expansive upcoming tour, Coconot is readying their sophomore release, [...]

Our friends at Funeral Pudding recently put up a rad post detailing Barcelona 's thriving, vibrant music scene (and more specifically, the adventurous DC/Luv Luv label). The highlight for me was this colorful, swirling new tropical pop jam from El Guincho 's other project, Coconot , taken from the band's forthcoming record, Cosa Astral (due in November ). Okay, I'll concede that this sounds vaguely similar to some of the newer Animal Collective material, but in this case [...]

I've been exploring new Barcelona music by way of El Guincho , the solo project of Barcelona-based Pablo Díaz-Reixa. While his first major (noticed) release was this year's Alegranza (drawing apt Animal Collective-meets tropicalia comparisons), his first LP Folías (more of a Panda Bear solo inspiration compared to AC) didn't draw much notice until after Alegranza had made waves, and especially after Gorilla Vs. Bear posted the album link . Folías was released on one of my new favorite labels, DC/LuvLuv (Discos Compulsivos) [...]
We bid farewell to this 2007 of great hecticness, haulage of goods from one place to another and much good music, we do this by peering into the future hopeful and confident like chthonic seers with an ace in the hole, discussing things that shall be hot in 2008. As an ...
