Video: Vimeo - YouTube Photos: Flickr Audio: download links below This Toad Session is something a little different, in that instead of setting up a studio environment in the house, we actually just recorded the songs at a house gig. The gig was in fact also the band's first live appearance in four or five years. So the whole atmosphere of the session is massively different to the usual ones we record. The interview took place all at once before the gig, rather [...]

>> We saw The Hush Now 's final show of the year Wednesday night and the quintet continues to be among the most formidable of Boston bands. We've been holding onto the fivesome's latest holiday jam "On Holiday" because, well, we're trying to hold the line against holiday creep. But now that Thanksgiving is over and done, it is time to confront the sounds of the season. The Hush Now 's aforementioned, bossa nova romp approaches irresistible, and we've had the one-song CD-R on repeat in the car for days. "On Holiday" is an uptempo confection [...]
Earlier this fall we were treated to Twin Shadow, the solo project of Brooklyn-based George Lewis, Jr. His adoration for post-punk was no secret, with a post-punk arsenal of rhythmic reverb that beautifully complemented Lewis' deep and somber voice – which naturally fell somewhere between Morrissey and Ian McCulloch. Barring some more lighthearted moments like [...]
In honor of my going out to a local club on free Monday music night for the first time in a year, I'm going to look deep into the recesses of my old LiveJournal to share with you yet another Artificial Artificial Paradises entry! Why, you ask? Because I used to go out on free music night almost every week when I first moved to Los Angeles (all the "hip" clubs on the east side host local bands and it's free to get in on Mondays), and I would drink a lot on those nights, and I still [...]

In a year that's seen chill-wave-no-wave-witch-house -glo-fi-lo-fi (delete as applicable) erupt over the internets like a virus (before eventually imploding in on itself), one band have remained a constant - cruising steadily throughout the crud, Yuck - masters of their own destiny - have set their own pace whilst casually overshadowing whatever *scene* is in vogue in any given month. By now, we know all about their nineties inspired college jams that soar with ease; filled to the brim with melodic pop hooks and blissed out guitar breaks. But underneath it all, what music actually makes them [...]

It's rare that we see an act struggle with deficient live sound because it is too quiet. But despite a rough start mapping the shortcomings of the house sound system, A Weather 's show at P.A.'s Lounge last night was uplifting, mesmerizing and poignant all at once. The Portland, Ore.-based quintet was touring as a trio using freshly hatched live arrangements situated around guitarist Aaron Gerber and drummer Sarah Winchester's murmured harmonies and Mr. Gerber's finger-picked guitar arpeggiation. Its hour-long set passed without any sense that the band was lacking component parts. If anything, playing as a lean, taut [...]

Perhaps the greatest challenge for thoughtful songwriters is to write compelling songs about relationships that don't bluntly reiterate the trite tropes of unrequited love, failed love or the teen ideal of infinite love. Yes, we know your baby done you wrong, up and left you, and/or won't text you back. But what about songs that address living in love, what people in relationships do to fill their days, ward off the doubt? Some songwriters can do it well, once in a while. Only the best songwriters can do it consistently and make those efforts sound effortless. Slow-core upstarts A [...]

"Bring me song of the sea... sing me a song of the sea." After a sailor´s theme, a six pack of songs about the sea is so obvious I almost opted out in the end. But as there are simply too many great songs inspired by the briny, I had no choice really. Selecting six beauties out of a truckload of candidates was hard enough. Here´s the ones that made the cut. Robert Wyatt´s contribution stems from his terrific Rock Bottom album. "You look different every time you come from [...]

On My Way is the second album by Thomas Trustfund's band Tap Tap (the lead singer of Pete and the Pirates). His debut Lanzafame was released back in 2003 and was considered a real gem that went unnoticed by most people. His new work was released on Stolen Records label at the end of Septemeber and once again contains really solid material. Happy, light pop that makes you smile and relax in the midst of autumn. We included them on our previous playlist on poplie radio and they were sure worth it. Enjoy! [...]

"Radio show host John Peel is known for his great taste in music and open forum for musicians to showcase their music. This compilation of Sub Pop artists performing songs on his British radio program is a great example of the strong performances he can get in his studio setting. Mudhoney starts with the magnificent "By Her Own Hand," a dark suicide anthem performed powerfully under the live setting. After two more strong tracks from Mudhoney, Tad makes a brief appearance with the angry "Helot." Although Tad Doyle's voice comes off as weak, the performance is very short and energetic. [...]
Song obsessions are those songs that we listen to on repeat. I noticed that my obsessions are often a week long. I also thought that other people might have similar obsessions. I've collected a panel of a few like-minded individuals and gotten their "song obsessions of the week." Quite often it's easy to explain why the song is good; it's much hard to explain why we're obsessed. Maybe you'll become obsessed with one of these. - Adrian ( me ): the Mountain Goats - Sax Rohmer #1 [...]

If you thought I ripped Bedhead at the wrong speed, you're in for a superslowdive with the apt-apt-aptly named Codeine. Languidity incarnate. Just try to keep your head out of the oven, turkey. Sub Pop release from 1993. Side A mp3: Codeine - Tom Side B mp3: Codeine - Something New
