For a while (well for just over 2 years) it sounded so good but a complete lack of chart action meant that Lou Hickey and Jon Lawler (yes, he of the Fratellis) went their separate ways last year. Thankfully they left some spicy material behind, a cover of the Roses 'I Am The Resurrection' was clever and this their big single should really have seen them break. In the end it did unfortunately. Given the bombast of his main band it seems a tad odd that Codeine Velvet Club didn't have a ready made market. And it's not like they [...]

Having spent the past year as co-writer and vocalist of the critically acclaimed Codeine Velvet Club with Jon Fratelli , Lou Hickey is now getting ready to release her own brand of vintage pop on the world. With two self-produced EPs already under her belt, Scotland's "Most Eligible Woman" is currently working on her first full length solo album. Championed by BBC Introducing , she already has an impressive independent solo career already behind her, having supported the likes of [...]

Codeine Velvet Club will be playing in Bucharest tomorrow and head to Japan later this summer for what will likely be their last gig. Still, the band fronted by Scotland's Most Eligible Lady Lou Hickey and Jon Fratelli went down a storm at SXSW and Lou recently spoke to us about that experience and more: Lou [...]

Codeine Velvet Club is a project that "just happened" and many are quite pleased it did. Jon Lawler(aka Jon Fratelli), of The Fratellis, was taking time out during The Fratellis' hiatus and teamed up with friend, Lou Hickey to write some material together. As things started to click, it was evident the pair's interest in music from Hollywood's "glamour days" was something to share with the rest of the world. While on tour supporting their self-titled album , Jon and Lou sat down with B-Sides host, Pete Mar to discuss their love for "the old [...]

Well then, that didn't take long. The album just came out in Canada less than two weeks ago and it's already time to say goodbye to Codeine Velvet Club, not even a week since I found out about the end of The Fratellis. Reports from the UK have announced that Jon Lawler has ended the band to continue working on his solo career. According to the article, his cohort Lou Hickey was in shock after "reading about it online". Although not entirely true and there are some quotes apparently taken out of context, the [...]
Last week, The Fratellis made a low key announcement in their fan forums that the band has found themselves making music "but just not together". And with that, The Fratellis confirmed that the band members had moved on to other projects with no plans to get back together anytime in the foreseeable future. The Fratellis - Ooh La Hot Love [ Ooh La La originally by Goldfrapp, Hot Love by T. Rex] The Fratellis - Solid Gold Easy Action [originally by T. Rex] The Fratellis - [...]

Somewhere between those seedy Season 2 trips Don Draper takes to LA in Mad Men and the noir-ish hills of David Lynch's Mulholland Drive rests the unhinged, uber-cool of Codeine Velvet Club . What the hell do we mean, you ask? Think alluring, just a little dangerous, but altogether intoxicating. Which is fitting considering the source. The non-Fratellis creative outlet of Fratellis mastermind Jon Fratelli , Codeine Velvet Club boasts more hallmarks of 50s and 60s pomp and pop than we have space to appreciate here. [...]

Ho-hum, it's another one of those weekends- the kind that offers an embarrassment of live musical riches for the choosing around Portland; the kind your mother might have told you to go participate in because there are live music-starved people all over the world and you should be thankful for what you've got. And what do you got? Only Miles Kurosky, Rogue Wave, Man/Miracle, RJD2, and Busdriver to name but a few for Friday; and Beach House, The Ruby Suns, A Weather, Hockey, Moneybrother, Dan Deacon, Explode Into Colors!, Mark Knopfler, and Akron/Family to cite a few others for Saturday. [...]
There's enough great music on the cutting room floor this time around to make a whole nother show. (Yes, I just wrote "whole nother." People say it all the time, way more than "NEW-kye-ler," and yet that's in the dictionary now as an acceptable pronunciation of nuclear. Maybe it should have an apostrophe. "Whole 'nother?" Yeah, that's better.) (artist - song - album + purchase link :: extra info) Aloha - Moonless March - Home Acres Band Of Horses - [...]

My feet aren't killing me, my legs have some spring back, I'm sleeping in my own bed and I haven't had a beer in the sunlight for three weeks. I guess I am actually back from SXSW. Dang. For music lovers/geeks/nerds (i.e. readers of this blog), SXSW is something that should be experienced at least once. It's an orgy of sun, music, beer, tacos, Bar-B-Q, beer, music, music and beer... and very little sleep. For some reason, there was free beer (Heineken, please) on the flight in. It augured well for the next few days. There was live [...]

Glasgow's Codeine Velvet Club is the vintage-inspired side project of Jon Lawler (of The Fratellis) and singer Lou Hickey. The duo celebrate a shared passion for 60's duets and dramatic orchestral pop on their self-titled release as we'll hear on Today's Top Tune " Hollywood ."
