Strangely enough, it wasn't the move of Black Keys drummer, Pat Carney, from Akron to NYC, or the seemingly imminent relocation of bandmate Dan Auerbach, which led me to start taking stock of all musicians who have departed the Cleveland-Akron Metro over the past year. Rather, it was the less publicized breakup of Cleveland rock mainstays Coffinberry , spurred on by bassist Tony Janicek move to Portland. For those of you not scoring at home, here's a list of some of those who have left NEO in the past year: JR Bennett of Unsparing [...]
* There's this concept in sports, "Going out on top," where an athlete retires after a big victory while he's still in his peak. Sure, he or she could put in a couple more years, earn a couple more paychecks, and maybe make it back to the pinnacle of their sport. The trade off is, especially in a contact sport like American football, you may suffer a freak injury, have your bell rung one too many times, and run the risk of ruining the rest of your adult life. Similarly, you can also overstay your welcome, become a shell of [...]

A couple years ago I saw The Walkmen for the first time opening up for The Black Keys and I was not very impressed. This made me worry going into the show because I recently have really enjoyed their new album, You and Me , and didn't want to be let down by a poor performance. The show started just about right on time with a decent amount of people in attendance, but not too many, so you could still move comfortably through [...]

Coffinberry 's self-titled debut can be best described, perhaps, as pop Americana-music that crosses the bridge between the country rock of Kings of Leon and more accessible, softer late 1970s pop. Not that the band is soft. It's clearly rock, rootsy and lyrical, fun and infectious, warm and informed by postpunk. Cleveland should be proud. Why note download these two tunes and get to know them better? Long Story Short Smashed on Honey BONUS HA HA THE [...]
I spent a good part of last evening having a few beers and a couple laughs with some old friends that I hadn't seen for over a year, including my good friend C, a pilot from Cleveland. We were talking about the music scene in Cleveland he mentioned that "Cleveland rocks, but nobody knows that." Well, perhaps the new self-titled record from Cleveland rockers Coffinberry, available June 30th from Collectible Escalators Records and elsewhere online, will help change that. ON THEIR NEW, SELF-TITLED ALBUM, Coffinberry move beyond their early post-punk affections to revel in a rootsier [...]

If you remember the early days of Cleveland's Coffinberry, you'll likely remember them as the post-punk aficionados of 2006's God Dam Dogs. Usually if a band enjoys success with a particular clique a redefining of your music might end up in disaster. But Coffinberry had the cohones to take the chance and the elements to make it work, which they've accomplished on their June 30th release of their self-titled LP. Featuring ambitious lyrics, more acoustic guitars and pianos and a Midwest gothic roughness, Coffinberry has hit on something that was only hinted at on God Dam Dogs. It was an [...]

From Strokes-like, fashionable, late-night rock on their debu to grimy, almost grunge like guitar rock on 2007's God Dam Dogs, Cleveland's Coffinberry are a band who always seem to be tweaking their sound from album to album. To be clear, this isn't a band who hop on hot genres, nor are they a band with an identity crisis. Rather, they're a group who refuse to let themselves become stagnant, adding and removing ingredients to their sound while never losing sight of the fact of who they are -- one of the Cleveland underground's signature rock bands. [...]
* Coffinberry's latest release, a self-titled affair, will be a limited edition vinyl release on Cleveland's Collectible Escalators Records. It will be available June 26th at their album release show at the Beachland Tavern and on the following Tuesday at Music Saves. If you're not into vinyl, or not in Cleveland, don't worry. The album will come with a free digital download code and it will also be available at iTunes and other digital e-tailers. *Also gearing up for their next release, is the Cleveland post-punk trio Mystery of Two [...]
*Cleveland rockers, Coffinberry , are hard at work on the follow up to 2007's most excellent release, God Dam Dogs. According to DX Ferris at the Cleveland Scene , the new album will feature a more expansive sound than God Dam Dogs', rugged guitar attack. Also of note, the band recently ended their contract with Baltimore's Morphius Records, and are currently searching for a label. Still, a Spring release is not out of the question. You can hear some of the new recordings now at Myspace . * Cleveland's Exit Stencil [...]

I have the hardest time writing in this blog. Some days are better than others. Like when I get a new album from a band I really like. Or when I go see a show where something cool happens. But most of the time, I have to make myself sit and down and update the blog or else it becomes stale and pointless. Half the time I know what I want to write about, but never really find the right way to express what I'm thinking down on pen and paper... or text and screen. [...]

(you'd rock hard too if you were drinking dollar beers) Hope you're having a great New Year's. I ran away to this place for it. It's really nice. ------------------------------ ------------------------------ ------------------------------ ------------------------------ MP3: While watching the band sort of pictured above in Cleveland recently (featuring my little sister's ex on the drums, who also sat next to me in Chemistry class in high school), they performed a cover of Cleveland scene staples Coffinberry (who also features some old high school acquaintances of mine). So I [...]

The Akron, Ohio record label Audio Eagle (launched by Pat Carney of The Black Keys) has released a new compilation of songs from bands all across Ohio. The compilation was released via select Ohio record stores on November 1, and a national release through Nail Distribution will follow on January 22. The album packs a whopping 21 songs, featuring a Black Keys track I hadn't heard yet, a good one from Six Parts Seven (who I've mentioned), and a whole bunch of rock'n stuff that I had never even heard of before. If you've ever thought [...]

Coffinberry by Ken Blaze In what is recurring theme in the days surrounding CMJ, a couple of out of town bands descend upon DC tonight for what should be a solid show. Boston's Tulsa and Cleveland's Coffinberry play The Red and The Black . Tulsa - Whissper Coffinberry - Write This
For our Mittwoch frolic we barrow out a couple more from the Fingertips goldmine, one by old friends The Connells, and one more from SXSW 2005. And why not, let's add a current one as well. I could probably say more, but this should suffice. A few things you should know about Coffinberry : 1. The band's name is taken from a historic Cleveland figure. I can't tell you who Mr. Coffinberry was, or what he did, but his name is on a street, park, and school in the western suburb of Fairview Park. 2. Though the band formed in 2002, God Dam Dogs is the band's first full length release. 3. God Dam Dogs rocks hard. Admittedly, it's a bit strange to see a band [...]

Coffinberry God Dam Dogs Morphius 2007 God Dam Dogs, Coffinberry's latest long player, still has a good deal of that New York city cool that oozed from 2005's From Now On Now and earned them comparisons to The Strokes and The Walkmen. This time around, however, that vibe from their earlier work is mixed with Seattle sonic sludge to create a fuller, heavier sound. Its dirty, gritty, fuzz fueled melodies are nearly (dare I say) grungy. I'm reluctant to use the G word (grunge) as it's gotten such a [...]

I recently got one of the more bizarre promo e-mails I've ever seen. The whole thing was in mad-libs, for reasons completely unexplained. Fortunately, I managed to stem my befuddlement and listen to the songs because there's nothing confusing about them, just a burst of rock and roll like I haven't heard in ages. The band is called Coffinberry , and you can talk about them with mad-libs, anagrams, whatever you like - just make sure you listen to this song: Write [...]
