These pages are normally devoted exclusively to the latest band, artist or release that is bubbling under and on the cusp of breaking if the music appreciating world knew what was good for it. We're a new music blog here at The Blue Walrus, and are proud of staying true to that format, and we reference other music blogs all the time when they find a gem before us (and there's a big list of other awesome music blogs here). But there is more to discovering music that just following your favourite blogs, so I thought I should bring to [...]

Long Long Long — Nothing a Little Tonic and Combing Can't Fix I'd had the unzipped folder of Long Long Long 's Who the Fuck Said Family Ain't Family No More EP sitting untouched on my desktop for a little over 2 weeks until this review and personal recommendation of a friend convinced me to actually listen to it. Now, after half-a-dozen playthroughs and near-religious trance induced by the flawless pop epic "You'll Not Guess [...]

Good review / Bad review One is thoughtful, informative, and most importantly insightful. The other is like a dull summary with a rating that seems intentionally provocative (or afraid of how the subject might react to anything short of perfection). Don't get me wrong. I find the album exceptional. And reluctantly so, which is quite an achievement for an artist that I had essentially given up on. But I'm not convinced by the rush by some to immediately declare an album as influential before it is even officially released. I'm [...]

Blue Hawaii: Blue Gowns Hat-tip to Cokemachineglow for pointing me towards Blue Hawaii , who I'd heard murmurings of but never actually checked out. I planned on listening to their Blooming Summer tape while studying (poor, poor decision), but ended up slamming the books as soon "Lilac" spun into gear. Make no mistake, this is some gorgeous, heart-wrenching stuff. With their show-stopping, elastic vocals and beautifully intricate arrangements, this duo packs an emotional punch that few acts can muster. [...]

I know Jess loves few things more than cats, especially dancing cats...Clearly, Keyboard Cat has found a more accessible path for his music. Though the debut release was stripped down and intimate, this year's release shows Keyboard Cat growth, with a more diverse assortment of instruments, some interesting new beats, and finally lending some vocals to what was previously an instrumental only
Gregg dropped a note on Facebook today that a new, unnamed album will be out by the end of this year! I was unconvinced that anything could boot his last album, Feed The Animals, out of rotation and mashup favor, but this might just do it! ![[Listen] – The Hood Internet vs The 2000s [Mashup]](http://cdn.elbo.ws/posts/2386003_lg.jpg)
The Hood Internet are musical and mashup pioneers. Regularly creating and releasing awe-inspiring mashups for free (you can download every one of their releases from their site via various file sharing sites) they are praised for mixing Indie/Rock artists with Dance/Electro/Hip-Hop artists into one gimungous ball of auditory heaven. They've been giving their music away on their site for almost three years now, but this is the first time (of what will be many) that I've featured them on ListenBeforeYouBuy. Recently they did a track for CokeMachineGlow 's Fantasy Covers: The 2000s podcast, a look back [...]

I am going on a whim and review Toronto's F**ked Up (Sorry I like to censor myself) Couple Tracks 2002-2009. I am not really familiar with the band at all besides what they accomplished in 2009. One being winning the 2009 Polaris Music Prize. Two using the money from the prize to do a benefit Christmas single for a charitable organizations working to publicize the high disappearance rate of Aboriginal women in Canada While we either wait for the follow-up to Chemistry Of Common Life On January 26, 2010 Matador Records [...]
All I ask of you is to please don't make 80's-esque album covers that immediately make me think of Garth Brooks' shirts.Thank you. That is all.Love, June

Pale Young Gentlemen (Madison, WI) Is it just me or does this cover sound a lot like Beck mixed with Dynamite Hack? Not saying that's a bad thing. You got to commend Pale Young Gentlemen for replacing gunshots with a bicycle bell. Haha. The track was originally recorded for Cokemachineglow's "Fantasy Podcast", which also includes covers by Stars Like Fleas, Mason Proper, AGF, Wye Oak, and a
Have you ever felt like the 90-word capsule reviews that pass as "music criticism" these days were too, like, long, man? Or thought that the slavishly press-release-ready writeups proffered by music bloggers didn't get to the thumbs-up/thumbs-down point quickly enough for you to figure out whether or not you were going to go off and not pay for a record? Well, have we got the site for you: Musebin , a "music reviews that restrict opinions to 140 characters or less but don't restrict those opinions from being voted on by other users popularity-contest style" Web 2.0 clusterfuck. OK, [...]
Don't hate him because he's beautiful. Mars Needs Guitars has an excellent group post on shoegaze, featuring the folks from Largehearted Boy, Chromewaves and Clever Titles Are So Last Summer - read it here . Psychadelic indie-rock masters The Paper Airplanes have a fantastic new track up on their MySpace . As if one CMG blogger wasn't enough - Cokemachineglow's Conrad Amenta has his own music blog, Percussive Piano , [...]

I stumbled across Jolie Holland on the radio last night - which makes sense, because I was driving with Mr. Greg Katz, general manager of UCLARadio.com . I was immediately blown away and had to - had to - hear more. Boy was I unprepared. Vocally, Holland sounds somewhere between Feist's jazzy improvisations and Fiona Apple's vulnerability. Plus an accent. If I didn't have a longterm girlfriend, I'd already be in love - and that's not even mentioning the completely amazing lounge-y acoustic backing band. Taking a decidedly pro-blogger [...]
