[Tim Booth of James turns 50 today? It's not so bad north of the half-century mark, lad ... salute. Meanwhile, in L.A. environs, it's a busy night:] Imaad Wasif, whose album "The Voidist" made our 2009 a whole lot better , kicks off a three-week residency at Spaceland — each of those Thursdays have a theme. Tonight it's "An Evening of Dead Wasif," featuring his band, supported by members of Red Sparowes performing as Mockingbirds and Jason Simon of Dead Meadow. ... It's the [...]

Colbie Caillat's breakthrough arrived before Breakthrough , when her debut Coco turned into a breezy surprise hit. Breakthrough isn't meant to catapult Caillat into a mainstream that already knows her, but to consolidate her success, so it's not entirely a surprise that the album bears evidence of her showbiz kid roots, a record that relies just a bit more on the studio than the song. It's a creation that's slicker and sleeker than the debut, but fortunately, it's not quite at the expense of Caillat's simple charms. The high-buff sheen on Breakthrough can [...]

For those of you up as late (or as early) as I am, here's a special treat for you! Some free MP3s from various musicians. Let's start with the major label act and work our way down. The first is from Universal Republic act Colbie Caillat , who is giving away a free MP3 of "I Never Told You" from her recent album, Breakthrough . The catch is that you have to go to Imeem to download it. Follow this link to get it . The next is from Sia [...]

[Birthday greetings go out today to Simon Le Bon ... and here's what's in store tonight:] Critics have heaped accolades on Sunset Rubdown's latest album "Dragonslayer," a labrynthian blast of image-heavy art-rock. The Montreal-based ensemble, led by Wolf Parade's Spencer Krug, ends the U.S. leg of its tour tonight at the Troubadour, where tUnE-YaRdS opens. ... Should be a fun night of dress-up (and cover) at the Echo — Otik Records presents the Voyeurs (as Creedence Clearwater Revival), the Flying [...]
Every now and then, a hit song comes along that you hate. Not the sort of song that you'll almost absentmindedly flip away from on a radio station in hopes of finding something better, or even the sort of song you complain about--I'm talking about those songs that make you angry in a violent visceral way, the ones you'll do anything you can avoid in any facet of life and that everyone around you either avoids when you're nearby or plays just to torture you. ...and every now and then, the artist who created that song you [...]

It's a long weekend, and I have just a short mixtape for you. I know- I'm a slacker. I'll try not to think about that this weekend while I'm poolside. Anyway, enjoy the mix and your holiday weekend. Tracklisting: Bad Lieutenant - Sink Or Swim Clare and The Reasons - Ooh You Hurt Me So Colbie Caillat - Begin Again [...]

Who knew that hiding behind Colbie Caillat 's sunny, "nose-crinkled" singer-songwriter exterior was a bluesy-voiced, man-thieving skank? In this quite stunning cover of the Pussycat Dolls' ( cover of Tori Alamaze's ) "Don't Cha" , Caillat slips with surprising ease into the song's naughty protagonist role, her smoky pipes resting in perfect unison with the backing band's strutting, lounge soul-baked arrangement (love those Al Green-esque organs!!). Of course this being the sweet girl-next door Colbie, references to being a "freak" and "raw" are conveniently replaced with G-rated descriptors "strong" and "smart", [...]

It's never a good sign when you get paired with one of the least funny comedians out of a pretty unfortunate Saturday Night Live ensemble for your "humorous" music video. And yet here's Colbie Caillat, who I guess is trying to make a thing out of palling around with comic types for her new album's promotional cycle, playing all flirtatious SNL 's perpetual manchild Bobby Moynihan in the video for her perky new single "Fallin' For You." As far as "dorky guys and cute singer-songwriter types" pairings go, this definitely ain't Fiona Apple and [...]
In this week's Pay to Slum, JTL yawns through the stagnant single chart, and checks in on Colbie Caillat at Six Flags.
A few times a year, Colonel Hector Bravado from the Donnybrook Writing Academy listens to the 30-second samples of the top-selling iTunes singles. Then he writes stuff. "I Gotta Feeling" Black Eyed Peas ...that this single's gonna be around a long time. That this single's gonna be around a long, long time. "Boom Boom Pow" Black Eyed Peas There's a glimmering toehold of admiration that can't be erased by the typhoon of my loathing of the Peas, and that is: this beat [...]
Photo: Meredith L Ward Former Dire Straits founder Mark Knopfler is wrapping up the follow up to his 2007 album Kill to Get Crimson for a projected summer release. Details to come -- but we know that it's on the WB schedule, even in a "to be scheduled" state. Knopfler and band will then launch a major international tour in 2010. Colbie Caillat (pic), the "Bubbly" singer who broke through with her debut album "Coco" returns with her sophomore album "Breakthrough" on August 25. Caillat again teams with producer/writer [...]

MUSIC NEWS - Platinum selling, award winning Colbie Caillat is readying her 2nd album, Breakthrough , for an August 25, 2009 release via Universal Republic. The Malibu, CA-based singer/songwriter, whose subtle style and mesmerizing vocals garnered her a global following thru MySpace long before her near-double platinum debut album COCO hit back in 2007 (and now available in a Deluxe Edition ); is working with an impressive array of producers, songwriters, and artists on the new album, including John Mayer [...]

While I'm waiting to see if there's some iTunes/iPod-related news coming up in the MacWorld keynote address, one update from the Garageband front...they've added music lessons. So, while Maura tries to find a way to put the Patrick Stump segments on a loop, you can learn how to play to real instruments via lessons John Fogerty, Colbie Caillat, Sting, Sarah McLachlan, Norah Jones or the guy from OneRepublic. If they add accordion lessons from Jimmy Sturr, I'm in. [ Macworld ]

"Holiday music" is one of my least favorite things. I hate going to the grocery and having to hear the same old clichéed stuff droning over the store's PA. The hairs on the back of my neck stand up, I start to grind my teeth, and I feel an urgent need to run away. I have yet to make it longer than ten minutes in any store whose holiday music is louder than the ambient crowd noise (that's probably why my fridge and cupboards are pretty bare right about now). So, it was a bit of a surprise [...]
