It's generally excepted, that when away from for an extended period from the population from which one would generally select their lovers, that all bets are off. Prison would certainly be an example…or perhaps the navy. San Francisco during the California Gold Rush of the mid 19th century would also be able to stake it's [...]

11. Cold Cave - "Confetti" At one point the Cold Cave record was possibly my favorite of the year. It just got so many things right at the perfect time: we were due for a reexamination of 902s wide-eyed teenage apocalyptic romanticism via some kind of self-conscious, unsubtle goth/industrial/synthpop revival. Heavy monosynth moongazing that's simultaneously tongue-in-cheek hilarious and dead-fucking-serious. I'm not sure everyone got the high-wire act that Cold Cave was going for here. 12. Purity Ring - "Lofticries" This is the track that [...]

I promised the staff I would not go all Masterpiece Theater with this intro, so I'll be brief. Our Annual Report has reached its halfway point with our Top 50 Songs of the Year. The many flags of our staff are hoisted high - and we couldn't be happier with what we have. From Cults' very first song to Tom Waits' thousandth song, we put up the tracks that left us with more thoughts, feelings, and impressions than any other. We think we done good. But just to make sure the world still spins on its [...]

One second. Sometimes that's all a photographer gets - and hardly in ideal conditions. At worst (and most likely), a photographer may be squeezed between 15 others in the pit, mere feet away from pyrotechnics, finding support from stress-rattled knees, while focusing on a spastic frontman and sheltering oneself from a downpour, which may or may not involve a hailstorm. Truth: A great photographer handles the unenviable task of capturing that one moment everyone goes home thinking about. Half-truth: There's probably a statistic somewhere that discusses what the job does to the heart. If not, there should be a study. Double-truth: [...]
31. Wild Flag - "Future Crimes" Few straight-on rock acts forced me to pay attention this year like Wild Flag (which features Carrie Brownstein and Janet Weiss of Sleater-Kinney.) This track in particular summons up the urgency & ferocity of the best of that legendary band. 32. Teen Daze - "The Harvest" - youtube This is from Teen Daze's 2011 concept album based on C.S. Lewis's Out Of The Silent Planet , and is also inspired by the time that Teen [...]
2011 was the year music learned to float. Actually, that's not true at all; music has been reaching for feelings of tidal drift since the first Gregorian monks figured out how to chant, or maybe since the first caveman licked a frog and figured out that his grunts got extra-spacey. But surveying our 2011 top 50, ethereal haze is something that's reached across genre lines to touch all corners of the musical globe. In indie rock, Bon Iver's slippery blend of smooth-rock sounds and abstract-jazz ideas shared a certain starry-eyed afghan-rug appeal with Gang Gang Dance's worldly stoner [...]

Y'all hear of Matador before? Better have... Some of the best indie rock of the last decade comprises the sophomore label's catalog. Here is a list of some of our favorite tracks. Unguided - The New Pornographers Smoke Ring For My Halo - Kurt Vile Autumn Sweater - Yo La Tengo Take You On A Cruise - Interpol I Want The World To Stop - Belle and Sebastian Be Your Baby - Harlem Alchemy And You - Cold Cave [...]
![FUN FUN FUN FEST 2011 [PHOTOS]](http://cdn.elbo.ws/posts/3852619_lg.jpg)
With its eclectic line-up, ranging from comedy to death metal to euro-electro-pop, Fun Fun Fun Fest has something for everyone. This was my third year attending the festival, and the move from Waterloo Park to Auditorium Shores was fantastic despite the crazy dust. There were four different stages; yellow (comedy), blue (electronic/hip-hop), black (metal/punk/garage rock) and orange (pop/rock) and tons of delicious homegrown Austin food options (Slayer hotdog from Frank anyone?). Other than the nine dollar Tecate tallboy's and giant Marlboro tents, the organizers truly managed to maintain a 'keep Austin weird' vibe throughout the festival. [...]

Fun Fun Fun Fest rounds out the festival season with a magical three-day weekend that is both very Austin-centric while also showcasing some of the most exciting talent to release material this year. The fest blends the bizarre (Captured by Robots, an all-robot metal band with songs like "Don't Shake The Baby" from a Star Trek: Next Generation -themed album), the popular mainstream indie-pop darlings (Passion Pit, The Joy Formidable), the "fucking metal" (Slayer, Cannibal Corpse), the local favorites (Autobody, Speak, just to name a few), the hilarious (comedians Matt Bearden, Henry Rollins), the dance tracks (Flying Lotus, [...]
We realize that not everyone has the good fortune of living in the great state of Texas, but between SXSW, Chaos in Tejas, Rites of Darkness and Austin's anti-ACL, Fun Fun Fun Fest, we feel the Lone Star State has got the lock on kickass music festivals and and you're really missing out if you haven't made the trek down for at least one of them.If you're fortunate enough to make it to Austin this
Well friends, Fun Fest is officially upon us this weekend and it's time to take a bit of a closer look at some of the bands that we'd recommend you check out. My co-writers and editors have already brought you some choice picks and battles so I guess it's now my time to turn the spotlight on a band that's got me amped up for this weekend's events. Cold Cave seem like an obvious choice. Follow the jump for more on the band. I'll be honest [...]
Before he started making elegantly catchy gothic drone-pop in Cold Cave, Wes Eisold led a very different sort of band: Boston hardcore bashers American Nightmare. (A legal issue eventually forced A.N. to change their name to Give Up The Ghost, but let's stick with the original name here, since it's obviously vastly superior.) The band released two albums of seesawing juddery roars before breaking up in 2004. On one Sunday afternoon, I watched them transform a Syracuse community center into a sweat-drenched hive of gymnastic moshing. They were the real deal, and now they're getting back together. [...]

The prolific Ian Dominick Fernow is back with another one. On the heels of his assaulting industrial full length Bermuda Drain , under his performing name Prurient (he is also a member of Cold Cave), he is readying a new release. The EP, entitled Time's Arrow , is a reference to the 1991 science fiction novel by Martin Amis whereby the life of a German holocaust doctor is played out in reverse chronology. Ready for an October 25 release on Hydra Head, Fernow recently released the album's title track. "Time's Arrow" is a hypnotic 8-minute industrial [...]

In my younger metal days, I remember hearing about a hardcore band called American Nightmare who had a singer with one hand. Under normal circumstances, it would suck to be that guy, but if you're the vocalist in a hardcore band, it could be used as a pretty unique gimmick to separate yourself from the pack in a crowded marketplace. Personally I would've gone with a hook attachment for maximum effect during live performances, but that's just me, and I'm weird. Anyways, American Nightmare never really took off and they broke up sometime in the mid-00s. The [...]

Just John and I had the pleasure of attending the sixth annual Pitchfork Music Festival in Chicago's Union Park on the weekend of July 14-16. It was hot. Really hot. The crowds came, though, and were treated to great performance after great performance. Every show I saw over the weekend was top-notch. The festival's treatment of its fans was also top-notch. Thousands of bottles of water were passed out to the crowds to keep them hydrated (no thanks to the goons who just threw water everywhere instead of drinking it). Security were friendly throughout the entire weekend. Two [...]
