Words: Gareth O'Malley Well, this is a turn up for the books! Yet another hotly-tipped band have sprung up out of Brighton. What sets Cold Pumas apart from their contemporaries, though, is that they are actually fully deserving of the praise being lavished upon them. Said praise looks set to increase exponentially in the wake of the unveiling of new single 'Beat Mystery', which taps into kraut-rock to produce something quite arresting indeed. Rest assured there is much more to come from this lot. For now, though, enjoy this. Have it for [...]
The sonic adventurousness of the patriarchs of the German progressive enlightenment did as you well know inform the subsequent outbursts of bile and clockwork percussiveness of the British post punk commune revolting against the advent of the Lady of Darkness, may our new leaders be as evil so that we can reap the rewards of [...]

"When we make music we don't do it in order to reach a certain point, such as the end of the composition. If that were the purpose of music then obviously the fastest players would be the best. Two things worth immediately mentioning about Cold Pumas . One, I will never make friends with the band's name. I picture a crate of refrigerated shoes, which is apropos imagery for my recent post-quitting smoking Lynchian nightmares. Two, that's completely irrelevant, as the music is awesome. Cold Pumas is a stalwart power trio from Brighton, and are fairly accurate in describing themselves as "HEALTH but in Neu time." On "Tropical Guilt," Cold Pumas summon precise 4/4 kraut apache rhythm and augment it with tape echo-laden punk vocals, light rapid-fire surf guitar, and unadulterated hypnosis. The amalgamation of [...]

In the No Wave book by Thurston Moore and Byron Coley, there is a photo of Glenn Branca and the dudes from Liquid Liquid trying to squeeze into a rickety lift and up to a house-party in some controlled rent loft in Manhattan circa 1979. This is what happens after: Skinny hip urchins as they are, [...]

88 Days fave Jon Hillcock put us onto this lot The Sticks this morning, and as sometime Brighton residents, interest piqued. We think a little of Let's Wrestle 's early days, and of Cold Pumas , and between the latter and this lot, suddenly Brighton's music scene doesn't seem as BIMM as it perhaps once did. IT IS RIGHT TO GIVE THANKS AND PRAISE for xxjfg , Cold Pumas, The Sticks and the Freebutt . The Sticks have a record out now on Upset The Rhythm , a stunning [...]
One of the few guitar driven bands in years that has excited me. Amazing video by Dan Nixon (actually, check out everything the lad has done - all fine fine work) for the Cold Pumas. 'Indie' may well be dead - but rock, or variations of the rock genre are utterly brilliant at present Hit dreamstate at 2.21

DJ Murlo This Soca-charged rework of DDW favourites Cold Pumas by Brighton's DJ Murlo is a 100% winner. It takes the guitar-cowbell-trance of the original and replaces it with a noise that sounds a bit like those pitch shifted female vocals that you find might find of a TwiceasNice compilation over a beat something similar to those most infamous of musical imperialists, Major Lazer. All of that ends up in something that is heavy on sun and sea breeze - something that Murlo calls 'UK Tropical'. It sound like the worst thing ever, [...]
Exciting times lie ahead for members of this fair MP3-zine. Along with our cohorts in 13monsters we're on the verge of launching our new record label: Hungry For Power. Our first release comes straight from the howling shores of Brighton beach where remorseless waves of guitars crash ceaselessly against the ...

Trends and scenes can sometimes be seen from miles off. But not many anticipated the stampede of synth-pop that arrived in 2008 and grew even more so this year. But the scent of a type of adrenaline-fulled grunge, a blend of garage rock, with the "hipster" tag is approaching. And without said tag, it's the kind of music that still maintains its appeal. In 2010 you can expect to hear the name Male Bonding splashed all over the shop having just signed to Sub Pop, and expect their companions, Brighton's La La Vasquez and Cold [...]

Thanks to John Waters and The Wire, Baltimore lives in people's minds as a seething pit of gleeful perversion and municipal degradation, and somehow the music made there meets those bizarre expectations. The last time we went to Brighton it was not like Baltimore. It was nice. Like London, but smaller and cleaner and with a beach. Cold Pumas are from Brighton, but their raging kraut funk lashes like a loose Ponytail, channeling childhood into dreamy raw-riffed jams. Maybe Brighton has changed.

Fearsome self styled "Shriekbeat" act KASMs are London-based Rachel Mary Callaghan, Gemma Fleet, Scott R. Walker and Rory Brattwell. All four members have been other bands: Rachel was the singer in spazzcore band Sin o the East, along with Rory on guitar; Gemma was in London based grunge-pop band Wolfie; Scott was in an ethnic/improv band called Aum Sahib and Rory was in quite a few bands, the most well known being short-lived NME favorites Test Icicles. During their first year together they have played in New York, Paris, Berlin, Milan and toured the UK with contemporaries Televised [...]
