“Bridges & Balloons†(Joanna Newsom Cover) from “Picaresqueties†6/10 It’s only fitting that indie rock’s most literate troubadour chose a song written by psych folk’s eclectic princess to cover on “Picaresquetiesâ€, a modest collection of post-“Picaresque†extras and b-sides. It makes perfect sense, in fact. It’s even easy to imagine how Meloy’s version would sound without even hearing it. And, while he most assuredly does justice to the wonderful song, it’s nothing if not predictable. Meloy trades in Newsom’s jumpy fingerpicking for a simple strum pattern, drops the vocal melody down a [...]

You can't beat a good cover version so I though I would put links to some of my favorite. Sarah Harmer - Left and Leaving (The Weakerthans cover) José González â€" Teardrop (Live Massive Attack Cover) Elliott Smith - Thirteen (Big Star cover) Colin Meloy - The Ballad of El Goodo (Big Star cover)

I refused to tell you about this because I hated it when, as a kid, it seemed you had barely gotten your holidays and there were signs up encouraging you to think about school already, but it's a great mix: back-to-school-songs! You can thank the genius at Music For Kids Who Can't Read Good . It also features my new favourite band (who really should be my old favourite band) Belle & Sebastian. And! There's a cover album of tributes to B&S here ! Oh yes, the covers. I nearly forgot. Architecture [...]

I watched part of Miss Teen USA last night, which brought back memories of High School when me and my friends would watch gather around and watch the tape (sometimes rewatching moments multiple times). Dodge convinced me to watch some of Rock Star: Supernova so that's why I missed most of it (Curse those phony rock singers!). What I did see, though, had me rooting for Montana to take the crown (you can probably see why from the above picture), and even though I didn't have much emotionally invested into it at [...]

So I'm back. Well, kind of. I got back from Chicago early Tuesday morning, and I've just gotten so much shit piled on to my to-do list that I haven't quite found time to post. It's okay, though. I'm gettin' there. And by the way, wasn't Pitchfork just fucking amazing? Liars, The Futureheads, and Yo La Tengo were in my top three, and Art Brut were pretty crazy too. And while Alex was busy hanging with the Liars (lucky bastard) I was busy haggling my ass off at the record fair (did I [...]

The Decemberists are going on tour this fall with a healthy handful of dates to be played from mid-October to mid-November. This only a couple of weeks after they release their 4th LP titled The Crane's Wife which will be released on October the 3rd, which according to their website is "two days shy of Colin's birthday." Speaking of Colin, i've got a tour-only EP of Shirly Collins covers that was released early this year that was a tie in with a solo acoustic tour for you all to listen to. It's really [...]
After resting up all day yesterday, I feel great. (Yay sleep!) Knowing that I have to get back to work today after my lovely day of rest, I'm going to dread having to answer phones and file. If only the world could take a page from The Smiths and make every day feel like Sunday. Maybe then, I can catch up on a lot of sleep I have lost and feel better. But until that happens, well....good luck to
Are there any better ways to start a week than with some covers? Well, probably there are, yes, but it's still pretty damn good. MP3 Colin Meloy - Charlie (Shirley Collins) Apparently Shirley Collins had a big impact on folk music, particularly in the UK, but I'm afraid that I hadn't heard of her before getting hold of this Colin Meloy cover. She obviously holds a great deal of importance to Meloy as he released an entire album of him covering her songs. 'Charlie' is the kind of [...]
