Tweet Robert Pollard , lead singer of Boston Spaceships, has always been a prolific musician. Guided By Voices , his first band, often made albums running to around twenty songs. Since disbanding GBV in 2004, though, Pollard has reached James Brown like levels of output, releasing fourteen solo albums in seven years. In 2007, along with three solo records, he released one record with each of his four side projects. He added a fifth side project in 2008, Boston Spaceships, and in 2011 [...]
WIRE are often pegged as minimal, but a conversation with main-man COLIN NEWMAN tends to be anything but—meaning of course that when we featured them in this week's issue, a lot of great interview... Support indie media! Read the rest at thephoenix.com . . .
… on Jan. 25, Pollard released his latest solo album, Space City Kicks, on Guided By Voices Inc. which opened the floodgates on a slew of new releases coming from the ultra-prolific songwriter this year. He recently reunited with former GBV guitarist Doug Gillard for another Lifeguards release, Waving at the Astronauts. That album was [...]

When Colin Newman temporarily split from the wire in 1980 he pursued a solo career and released the album 'A/Z' just before he decided to travel to India to discover new sounds. It's that typical 80's drone beat you would expect from him but with ambiguous synth and heart cooling lyrics. A last minute cold weather listen with a transfer to summer feel. Bonjour. Aujourd'hui c'est bercredi. Ben oui, bercredi. Quoi ? On est beudi ? Bien. [...]

In The Nursery Iskra Colin Newman Alone I stopped by the FNC last night, and nothing against the festival itself (at all!), but The All Tomorrow's Parties' movie, (contributions by Jonathan Caouette and Vincent Moon (of Blogotheque and the wildly popular Takeaway Shows )) was an abysmal train wreck. It started promising enough - the title sequence [...]

yeahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh hhhh!!!!! Wire - "Mr. Suit"

Of all the posts that have shown up on the proliferous Cargo Culte blog, the one I have gone back to quite often is I Hate Art, Can't Stand It , which provides a nice companion soundtrack to Simon Reynolds' book Rip It Up and Start Again: Postpunk 1978-1984. With the permission of the Demagogues of the Cargo Culte, I have compiled 15 more hits from Art Punk's formative years. Some of the bands are mentioned in Reynolds' book; others are [...]
Official Site MySpace Page Taking equal bits of inspiration from art and punk, but leaving behind some of the more ridiculous aspects of both fields, Wire were able to fuse experimentation and rock music in ways that many bands attempted to capture ever since their debut "Pink Flag" came out in 1977. Future band members Colin Newman and [...]

So after posting the Colin Newman interview I got to thinking about how great the first CN solo record 'A-Z' is. It's actually more like the 4th Wire record (which it was originally planned as) and features Wire's drummer Robert Gotobed as well as Mike Thorne who produced and played keys on the original 3 Wire records. The result is a continuation of '154' and the direction the band was heading next. I love this record, but it definitely wavers between gold and shit through out the album. The good far outweighs the bad. [...]
Dear friends, & Jury by Colin Newman is such a pop song. It throws me off a bit. That and the end; these fabulously sour guitar lines clashing with one another under the fade-out. I picture a man at a station saying a hurried goodbye to a friend. Somewhere along the way, their heartfelt exchange take a bad turn. There are accusations and recriminations. One person boards, traveling slowly
