You know boundary-pushing sax player Colin Stetson , even if you don't realize it. As a performer, he's best known as a player with Bon Iver and Arcade Fire; as a studio musician, he's sat in with Tom Waits, Godspeed You! Black Emperor and countless others. His latest solo record, New History Warfare Vol. 3: To See More Light , came out last week, and tonight he plays World Cafe Live on tour in support of it. The all-ages show with Sarah Neufield begins at 7:00 p.m., tickets are available here . Below, watch the music video [...]

Nick Bostick That Arcade Fire will release a new record this year - possibly/probably produced by or at least involving James Murphy - is pretty much a given. But also a given is that it won't be out until Fall, at the earliest, because a) it's already Spring and it's not done, and b) Fall is still when all the big records come out and this is about as big as they get. It would be nice to be able to say that Arcade Fire violinist Sarah Neufeld will be able [...]
Bass saxophonist Colin Stetson’s latest release New History Warfare Vol 3: To See More Light is bound to be as thoroughly dissected and analyzed as any of his previous records. There is something inherently technical—though still relatable—about his music, and this can lead to critics emphasizing the precision over the emotion—the method over Stetson’s apparent musical fervor. And while all these critiques are valid, if slightly monochromatic in their evaluation, to fully appreciate the wonders and ridiculously complicated rhythms of his music, there must be an equal presentation and appraisal of all aspects of the music. It’s no [...]

So this is apparently what Justin Vernon has been getting up to when he hasn't been going around acting like a Grown Ass Man with his new-old band The Shouting Matches: he's reunited with erstwhile collaborator Colin Stetson , a Michigan-based multi-reedist who specialises in bass saxophone, but has been known to play clarinet, flute and French horn (among other things). Vernon's returning the favour after Stetson worked with him on his second (and for now, his last) album as Bon Iver, but it's not strictly a collaborative record. Indeed, Vernon may well have overshadowed Stetson if [...]

Not much is left to say about Colin Stetson , but if you haven't gotten caught up yet, here's a brief rundown: Colin Stetson is a musician on a whole new level for musicians. He plays saxophone (and pretty much everything else with a reed) like a professional athlete, wrestling, pushing, and generally torturing his instrument, utilizing a technique called circular breathing to play for, sometimes, 15 goddamn minutes straight! Wikipedia has generously compiled a list of artists he's recorded and performed with, and it's even larger than I recalled: [...]
Canadian saxophonist Colin Stetson delivers another breathtaking performance for La Blogotheque, featuring two songs from his latest full-length album, New History Warfare Vol. 3: To See More Light . Check a review for the album below:
Colin Stetson is a classically trained saxophone player who uses circular breathing to play more notes in a song than Steve Vai and Joe Satriani combined and plays them on the outré four-and-a-half foot tall bass saxophone. That would ostensibly make Stetson something like a prog musician, no? That word "prog” - one of the most vulgar invectives in music. Prog means lauding technique over emotions, showmanship over honesty, 7/8 over 4/4. The stigma of prog is that it's music of the bourgeois and the privileged, dismissed easily as a selfish exercise with no politics, no agency, or worst of [...]
After experimenting with three formats for the Monthly Mix - MP3 zip, Spotify playlist, Soundcloud set, etc. - in March we finally came upon a solution that pleased everyone: all of them. And so, for you, here is the month's music, whittled down to its very best, via each of the aforementioned mediums, limited only by its availability on said mediums. This means a 13-track zip, a 12-track Spotify playlist, and a whopping 54-track Soundcloud stream. And somehow, falling through all the cracks and not represented on any is one of the month's finest: The National's straight-to-Youtube " [...]

When you listen to Colin Stetson , sound hits you in every possible direction - the melodies go through, above, and below you, and the effect is a disorienting yet dazzling reinvention of how music can occupy a space. The Michigan-bred Stetson has frequently toured with the likes of Arcade Fire and Bon Iver, while Tom Waits even nabbed him for his hollowed albums Alice and Blood Money . Utilizing improvisation and his own patented circular breathing techniques, Stetson is able to create narratives that transcend simple melodies, which range from chilling screeches to [...]

On Colin Stetson's latest installment in the New History Warfare series, the Canadian saxophonist displays some tenderness in his incredibly technical solo compositions. WATCH THE REVIEW

Toronto concerts worth knowing about in March, 2013. OK, Erin didn't write this so if you came here for decent jokes, find her via Eat This , her classy soup kitchen. Y'all are really lucky, though, because bands are getting into their warm-weather-happy-times tour schedules, and while NXNE isn't until June (and so far looks to be dis-a-pointing compared to Halifax's Obey fest) May is bumpin. Bumpin. Meaning I found some legit shows to hype for you, including Toronto Thaw 3, which will set [...]
I was at a workshop for my day job last week, presented by an expat American who kept referring to his asides and real-life examples as his "schtick". That same morning, on my drive into this day-long presentation, I had been listening to New History Warfare Vol. 3: To See More Light, the new album from another expat American, Colin Stetson , and all this talk of "schtick" got me thinking about Stetson, his record, and the schtick in all our lives we have to deal with. The Yiddish meaning of [...]

Montreal-based avant-garde saxophonist Colin Stetson is truly a game-changer. His otherworldly vision, execution, and grand exclamation is confounding, deep, and insatiably provocative. Its an easy assertion for someone to listen to "To See More Light" and proudly bask in something completely original and intoxicating. The new video, which comes from Stetson's upcoming album New History Warfare Vol. 3: To See More Light , is a hauntingly rich black-and-white footage of the Atlantic. Which, not coincidentally, Stetson often brings up during his live performances. According to SPIN , Stetson [...]
