Wow, it's been a terribly long time since we've posted here. Since then, [...]

So I'm sure everyone can think of some song by their favorite band that's about (or just named after) a city. Yeah, there sure are a lot of them. I like to think they're written for some reason other than to get a loud "Whooo" (or "woot" if you prefer) when they play them for said city, but I think I'm just lying to myself. It's sad really, lying to yourself. Anyway, this week's six pack is songs about cities. Stu's going first this time, let's see how long it takes me to screw this up: [...]

The month of April and rain are nearly synonymous in the north-western hemisphere of the world. Since that's where I live those are the lamentations you shall here today. It rained (and snowed) today in the little place I call home and I'm sure it will keep on raining through the end of the month. And then stop. Forever. Because I live in a desert. We've got some tunes to get your drenched and dreary soul through the day. First off, my (Kraig) picks: The Beatles - Rain [...]
I hope that my daughter never goes through a Spice Girls stage. I hope and I pray. For the 70 songs from the 1990's that preceded this batch, just type "nineties" in the search box in the right sidebar. MP3 | Collective Soul - Shine MP3 | Extreme - More Than Words MP3 | Ash - Kung Fu [...]

In any form of writing you're going to hear similar themes - whether it be lost love, anger, lust, fear etc. - this is what writing is for. It's meant to channel those emotions into something relatable. One theme that continuously pops up is the yearning for home. I'm sure there's some kind of psychological explanation for an ordinary human being's need to have a place to call his own and to yearn for the familiar since it's an emotion we all feel. As relaxing as any vacation [...]
Well now, I wasn't planning on doing a midweek mixtape. I guess I'm just spoiling everyone. One of my guilty pleasures is watching American Idol , which I have missed since season three due to work commitments. I thought the '70's covers this week were very weak, quite disappointing actually, so I thought I would pull out some of my favorite '70's covers to compensate. Super Sounds of the Seventies Lily Allen - Mr. Blue Sky [...]

The 90s was a strange and exciting time for me. Fresh out of school, weaning off flea-infested metal and senseless movies with young pretty actors filled with oddball dialogue that amounted to nothing. But more importantly, many nights sitting in front of my beat up stereo, catching the 8pm show on Time Highway Radio with my hand on the record button, waiting for those killer tracks. There was a new sound on radio then. A new sound that was loosely classified by This is Alternative stickers stuck on their albums. The idea [...]

"Mom, I find it interesting that you refer to the Weekly World News as . . . ' The Paper .' The paper contains facts." (Irish accent) "This paper contains facts. And this paper has the eighth highest circulation in the whole wide world. Right? Plenty of facts. 'Pregnant man gives birth.' That's a fact." The Weekly World News published its swansong final issue today, and of course when I read about it this morning, I fondly thought of one of my [...]
Tchaikovsky - "Pieces, Op. 72: 14. Chant élégaïque" [Buy] I was 16 when I first visited Budapest. No one believed me back at home when I told them it was a combination of two cities; Buda and Pest. I guess you're less likely to believe something about a foreign country than about your own. I got there in October, I was supposed to visit my Muka (we called her that) who was visiting an old friend, but I had taken the train a day early from Paris where my parents were touring. I didn't tell my Muka, I thought I [...]
Counting Crows is heading out on the road this summer in support of their new album coming out this fall, which is in the mixing stages at the moment. They will be reprising their double bill with Live -- I saw this same pairing on the tour for This Desert Life at the Greek Theatre in Berkeley, and that was just when Ed Kowalczyk was hitting his full rap-rock stride (complete with crotch-gesturing, which he has now perfected into a veritable art form). It was [...]
It might be obvious, but Collective Soul used to release really good music. For the most part though, this came to an end around March of 1995...after that, the band's releases became scattered (at best). I can still remember listening to the local rock radio station's yearly wrap up in 1997 and hearing "Precious Declaration" proclaimed as the finest of the hundred or so songs on the list. It was a good song, and I remember when first hearing it how different it sounded, how it seemed so fresh; but then again I was fourteen, [...]
