Planes Mistaken for Stars Not going to Lollapalooza or the millions of afterparties happening all around town? Fear not, Loud Loop Press has the low down on all the other hip happenings around Chicago. This week we're talking about Pearls at the Burlington, Planes Mistaken for Stars at Ultra Lounge and Landmarks at The Whistler. However, if you are hitting up Lolla, take a few minutes to check out our handy Lollapalooza preview . And don't forget to check our Twitter and [...]
We know you lost sleep over the course of last month, waiting patiently, racking your brain to see what we could possibly list as our favorite albums of 2011. We lost sleep too, compulsively checking our lists twice and perhaps after a fist fight or two, we settled on 25 firm choices. After all, who listens to as much music as us? Who actually has time to listen to put together a valid top 25 list with no filler? We’re fairly certain that most other sites don’t include at least a handful of the albums listed on none other [...]

"I'm looking for something that'll...break through. You know?" James Woods' Max Renn yearns in David Cronenberg's 1983 cult classic Videodrome . Oh, how things have changed. In today's day and age, we've drowned in media. It's swallowed us. We're nothing but a bubble amidst one infinite, engulfing abyss. Intimidated? You should be. With each passing second, you're losing opportunities to take advantage of a culture that's moving ahead and at an exhausting rate. You could very well be alone...left behind...abandoned. Terrified yet? Yes? Well, that's more like it. -Michael Roffman President/Editor-in-Chief

Another week, another set of new albums. But firstly, this week saw the official release of a new live album from a musical genius that some people consider one of the forerunners of indie rock - the prolific Peter Gabriel. This week, Gabriel released New Blood, an album recorded live in London with an orchestra, [...] Read more, get songs or stream the entire mix on Indie Rock Cafe

Here are the new albums out this week we found intriguing; Color Radio; Architects Color Radio; Quite House The Morning Clouds; Wasted Youth Blues The Morning Clouds; The Wrong Things Radio Moscow; The Great Escape Of Leslie Magnafuzz Radio Moscow; Little Eyes Still [...]

Last week we let you in on a little secret from Chicago called Color Radio. This indie four piece features two brothers, Jonathan and Tohm Ifergan, along with Matt Thomas and Joel Chasco. Their sound is gigantic, layered with all manner of bells and whistles just waiting for you to grab Architects and throw on a pair of headphones. You’ll be enamored. Since their second album is about to see it’s physical release, we thought it’d be a great time to send some questions their way and see what we could learn about them. We even get [...]

We started this thing on Wordpress last year and in the beginning we did movies, music, and films. There were a million websites who did one, or the other, but not many that did all three. Unfortunately that model was not sustainable…it’s impossible to keep up with massive amount of new music, let alone new films every week plus an episode of several television shows. With only two men on staff and real lives to attend to, we shifted solely to music. It’s what we love and what we follow the closest. Fast forward to a year later [...]
Fall officially arrived a few days ago, and with it cool weather and the inevitable rain. Color Radio’s disc Architects also arrived in my inbox at the same time…conveniently before I had to head out for a long drive to the airport. I couldn’t have asked for a better soundtrack for the season or the trip. Architects harnesses some beautiful music, with emotive melodies and shimmering guitars interspersed with just the slightest bit of synth that create an atmosphere of wonder. Here’s two of my favorite cuts from the album thus far, “Smile At A Funeral” [...]
The risk in making big, atmospheric rock songs is falling just short of orbit. Fill your ambition with jet fuel - or maybe it's the other way around - and try to get your bird in the air. Chicago's Color Radio, a pair of brothers from Mexico City now turned into a driving four-piece, aren't necessarily daunted by the challenge of having "Quiet House" get the nose up over the skyline and turning

>> '80s-styled hooks and boundless whimsicality makes Roberts & Lord 's forthcoming sugary longplayer Eponymous curiously arresting. The MySpace-spawned (really) duo of Californian Rafter Roberts and Londoner Simon Lord operates within a shifting grid of styles as varied as the bastardized Go Team! -goes-dancehall stomper "Windmill" or the exceptionally odd head-bobber "Mosquito." The gritty backing tracks were recorded to a four-track machine by Mr. Roberts in San Diego, and then sent through Intertubes to Mr. Lord, who added vocals and arranged things. While formally mediated by this swappy-swappy, the resulting music has [...]

Three grab-a-beer-and-take-in-the-ne w-digs reasons to head over the Empty Bottle tonight... 1. That’s right, the Empty Bottle is finally re-opening tonight after closing for a few days to fix the place up. I don’t know about you, but we were coming down with the shakes. Anyway, tonight’s show features headliner Brontosaurus , a Chicago duo made up of Nicholas Kelley and Nicholas Papaleo. The pair just released its debut album Cold Comes to Claim in June. The six-song collection is swimming in gentle, but dramatic baroque pop gems full [...]

Chicago dreamy indie rockers Color Radio are streaming their new album, Architects , for free on their website. The 12-track album is an engaging listen from the warm swirl of the keyboard-driven, Kid A -esque "Vespers" to the dripping reverbed guitars of the quixotic take, "Sharks [in a sequence]". Listen to Architects below: Architects officially release date of June 14, but you can pre-order the record at Color Radio's Bandcamp page right now. Finally, be sure to [...]

Trail of Dead | Photo by Audrey Leon Happy Seis de Mayo, muchachos! We've got another beautiful weekend ahead of us, and I'm not even talking about the weather. Although, that is pretty nice, too. Hopefully, you aren't nursing terrible Cinco de Mayo hangovers from the many sold out concerts that happened yesterday because this weekend is bopping, big time. Without further ado, the staff at Loud Loop Press present our picks for this weekend's most happening shows including Big Science at Subterranean , . ..And You Will Know us by [...]

[caption id="attachment_13223" align="alignnone" width="445" caption="California Wives"] [/caption] Well, if you couldn't tell by stepping outside this morning, Summer is ending and Fall is near. It's practically chilly in the shade! Still, Chicago's festival season and outdoor performances roll on. Of course there's the North Coast Music Festival set to take over Union Park this weekend. Be sure to check out our North Coast Music Festival Preview before heading out there this afternoon. Also set for this weekend is the Joyous Outdoor Event with music curated by the Metro and featuring [...]

Three reasons to head on over to Lincoln Hall tonight... 1. Because three local favorites are playing for a very good cause. Louis and the Hunt will headline the show with their subdued, melancholy brand of indie-pop. Their songs are built around a very minimal tension that barely holds together, but it does, and it's extremely satisfying. Check out the song, "Telephone Lines," on their Myspace . 2. Because indie-shoegazers Panda Riot will also be [...]
Brooklyn kids Body Language (who truly have one of the better tracks of the year with "Social Studies") played the second monthly "Crush" party at Glasslands Gallery in Brooklyn on a freezing cold Wednesday night. They were joined in support...
Chicago's Color Radio have impressed me since I heard their EP, "Be Safe, Beware" just today. The band combines a post-rock ethic with traditional song structure. The compositions are often idiosyncratic, with heavy bass and high production values. Color Radio are also... Click the link to read more
