If Fozzie Bear decided to become an indie rocker, he might sound something like Alabama's Colossal Gospel . So, if you're unwilling to grow accustomed to a voice that sounds a little strained (and harmonies that, oddly, seem to match), this isn't for you. But trust me, if you stick with it, it's worth it. In fact, the voices sound like men trying hard to speak, fighting through either exhaustion or pain to form words, and it feels appropriate for this gospel-folk record. I've listened to Circles several times now. Gets better every time. [...]

Colossal Gospel , though a tongue-twister of a name, put out some easily digestible acoustic folk music this past July. Out of Leed, Alabama, the duo which consists of Chris Johnson & Stephen Weibelt self-released their debut "Circles", available for free download on their BandCamp page. Harmonies that sing like Fleet Foxes are perfect company for the fall weather. Enjoy "Bitter Man" below. Bitter Man by Colossal Gospel
Colossal Gospel sent us a listen to their album Circles which they released this summer. Times like these make me glad that we started Sirens of Decay. I may have never found these guys otherwise - you just never know. What I do know is that "Leaving" is one of the coolest tracks I've heard in a while. I can't put my finger on what makes it so wonderful - is it the layers of vocals, the rolling/galloping sound of the instrumentation, or just the simple fact that it sounds beautiful and fresh? Whatever it is, for [...]

Daniel Tosh can talk all the smack about Alabama that he likes; the duo Colossal Gospel will redeem the Yellowhammer state in the eyes (and ears) of hipsters and common folk everywhere. Hailing from Leeds, AL (outside of Birmingham for those that don't know southern geography) and comprised of Stephen Weibeilt and Chris Jackson, Colossal Gospel shines a light on the dark side of Americana. Their brand of stripped-down southern blues incorporates traditional elements (e.g. prominent acoustic guitar, primal rhythms, gospel harmonies, subtle piano) with modern sounds (warm psychedelia of Grizzly Bear and a [...]

I owe an apology to everyone for slacking last week and not having a playlist up. I'm now part of the Listen Before You Buy family doing "New Music" posts and this is my first week involved with them it's something I'm excited about. Having never cared about editing or formatting and only about getting [...]

CG is gorgeous gospel-influenced folk from Alabama. "I Have a Heart, I Have a Heart" is just one of many gutwrenchers these guys have put to record. We highly highly recommend the duo's LP Circles which you can stream in full on their Bandcamp . Colossal Gospel - I Have a Heart, I Have a Heart Colossal Gospel ( Facebook ) ( Soundcloud ) Rating 8.4

For an album that was recorded in "a small Alabama home's closets, hallways, and bedrooms" Colossal Gospel's album Circles sounds surprisingly lush. They must have packed a lot of guys in those closets (but not really, since CG is made up of two people). The album is folksy, but they draw more comparisons to Fleet Foxes and Beirut than to Bob Dylan or Neil Young. Check out a track below, and if you like what you hear, get the full album here . Colossal Gospel - "Bitter Man"

Colossal Gospel hail from Alabama and spent six months recording their debut album Circles . The band is made up of just Chris Johnson & Stephen Weibelt, and yet throughout the album they are able to create a gorgeous, warm intimacy that somehow sounds bigger than just a duo. Theirs is a traditional folk sound, but one that benefits from carefully constructed lyrics and smooth, choral harmonies that evoke the comfort of a fireside hearth as much as they do a campfire. The care that has gone into the record is evident from the first note [...]
Beautiful, choral folk song by Colossal Gospel called "Bloody Boat"

6am Repeat is a recurring feature here at Folk Hive in which we stream the latest track that plays incessantly in the earbuds when we awake at that hour and imbibe massive amounts of coffee and cigarettes in preparation for the advancing day. Consider it your jam of the day — a sweet, sweet gift from me to you. I love you, dude. In fact, not gospel at all. Unless, of course, you consider any music that moves you and makes you ponder gospel. [...]

Yes, you may have heard similar sounding folk tunes before. No, the familiarity does not take away from the music. Colossal Gospel, out of Alabama and entirely non-religious, is a duo with striking harmonies and a southern folk flair. Without the ability to afford studio time, the fellas shacked up in the closets (see photo above), hallways, and bedrooms of a small Alabama home to record their new album, Circles . They spent months perfecting the sound, especially the lyrics, making sure the instrumentation was matched with carefully selected syllables throughout. Give it your best [...]
15 years ago I would have most likely stumbled upon this recording by way of a dubbed cassette; a decade ago via a hand scrawled, black felt-tipped, CD-R. Over the past couple of years both have given way to a new homespun, easily produced/distributed, counterpart-Bandcamp. Rooted in traditional folk music, Leeds, Alabama's Colossal Gospel is [...]
