Hi, I'm Ryan Smith from Columbus, Ohio.  Most people would probably say I'm a singer-songwriter.  At shows, it's just me with an acoustic guitar and maybe some harmonica.  Over a decade of making albums though, I've really tried to stretch my musical limits as much as possible.  Last year, I put out a record titled "Waiting" that was entirely electronic, aside from the vocals.  On Tuesday, April 30, 2013, I will be releasing my latest work, "Primary Numbers".  It's entirely instrumental, which is something I've wanted to do for a long time.  I hope you enjoy it. After the launch of the site, which my friend Brandon Whightsel helped design and come up with the original logo, Clinton Reno has been the visual identity of everything we produced. This included, but was not limited to stickers, t-shirts, advertisements, posters, album artwork for Sunken Treasure, tote bags, and even my wedding invitation. Yesterday, Knitting Factory Records released Fela Kuti's the Best of Black President Pt. 2   which is an extensive collection of the legendary Afrobeat pioneer's music ranging from tarting with 1971’s “Black Man’s Cry” and ending with 1992’s “Underground System”.  This release is part of Knitting Factory's ongoing commitment to make Fela Kuti's music available to the public. The above artwork for "Best of Black President Pt 23 was revived by a Columbus ex-pat   Zach Jaeger  . Mr. Jaeger  has worked on several of Knitting Factory's Fela efforts including   Fela: Live In Detroit 1986 [...]

If you're not a fan of the Ravens or Curren$y , then I'm sure Sunday was a bit of a disappointment (I fall in with the Jet set). There was the game delay, a half-hearted Beyonce/Destiny's Child performance, and a batch of hardly funny or persuasive commercials. Still amazed that Kelley Deal performed in an alley this past fall as part of the Independents' Day Festival. For the past year or so, Kelley's been working with Mike Montgomery (Ampline) under the name R. Ring though one suspects that with an upcoming Breeders reunion tour (thus far limited to a handful of European dates), R. Ring performances might become a bit rarer. On her last tour, Val Glenn aka Time and Temperature stopped by Daytrotter to play a few songs, and you can now hear the results of that session . Most of the tracks are from the full-length she's currently finishing before exiting Columbus for chillier northern climes in March. While original plans were for a double-album follow up to Cream of the Low Tide , Glenn says she's condensed it down to a single. Though a coincidence - a tour date in Columbus a day after their 7th album is released - you can pretend like Mice Parade's show at The Tree Bar on Wednesday night is a CD release party. Candela 's a great late-night listen - layers of sounds filling each song leading some to label Mice Parade as a shoegazer band. The hypnotic sway of the first single, "This River Has a Tide", doesn't prove contrary to this idea. [...]

Fidlar and Wavves are touring together. They are also fun punk bands that are on Mom & Pop Records. Fidlar has a video for “Wait for the Man” below. Will Oldham is coming to town as Bonnie "Prince" Billy, accompanied by players from his Chijimi EP: Cheyenne Marie Mize and Emmett Kelly. It's a special performance - just one of three on this mini tour - that will likely incorporate a fair amount of songs the trio played at a sacred music festival in Milan. the OSU Hip Hop Literacies Conferences are upon us again. The 2013 theme is Pedagogies for Social Change.  Keynote speakers for the Feb 15 portion at the OSU Union include NYU Professor Martha Diaz, and Dr. Christopher Edmin.  (Dr. Edmin was recently in the New York Times with the GZA because the two are developing ways to utilize Hip Hop's oratory methods into science education.) Tuesday night, San Francisco's Castle brings their thrashy doom metal to Kobo . A couple of Columbus's finest metal bands - Sleepers Awake and Ride to Ruin - share the bill. Doors at 8, show at 9. $7 will get you in the door.
