This year's list of favorites is fairly sedate (even for me), with just a little ruckus here and there. Lots of morning-coffee music, which I guess says something about my 2011. But music's strength is its pliability. It can be whatever you need it to be at the moment, especially when we have instant access to virtually any song ever recorded, often for free . Judging by this list, I needed music to be a salve more than a release valve this year. I also never expected my favorite album to come from someone who held the [...]
Off Philip Cogley's just-released EP of the same name.

It seemed like a strange billing - one of the most criminally underrated power-pop songwriters of our lifetime opening for a young, up-and-coming female singer-songwriter - a tour that makes a stop in Columbus, at The Basement, on Sunday night. But, as Mike Viola explained when I talked to him on the phone from Alabama last week, it all makes sense. Viola is currently on tour promoting his latest release, Electro De Perfecto , which came out in October. If I'm doing my math correctly, this is Viola's 11th release [...]

MP3: "Grand Champion Steer" Between the Ass Ponys and Wussy , Chuck Cleaver's got 11 or so full-lengths and countless EPs and singles under his belt. One wouldn't expect the heavily tattooed Cincinnati songwriter to produce his best collection of songs this late in his already highly-prolific career, but that's exactly what he's done with, in my opinion, the best release coming of out Ohio in 2011. To be fair, Cleaver's not the sole songwriter in Wussy, it's a collective effort with Lisa Walker (guitar, vocals), [...]

MP3: Day Creep - Dive into the Ground If you haven't picked up Aaron Troyer's last Day Creep tape Underneath The Mess , get with it. I picked up my copy back in June and it's hardly left my cassette player since. Luckily, he's made a second one and will be releasing it tomorrow night at Bourbon St. You can hear Aaron play songs from Death Bell Chimes (released on Snow Clone) as well as catch Turquoise Feeling and Messrs (Mat Bisaro and Bo Davis's new band) with DJ Huggybear [...]
Click here to view the embedded video. You've got plenty of good options for Columbus shows on Saturday night. Here's some facts about one of 'em: Ex- Beetkeeper / Burn Barrel frontman J.P. Olsen 's Malefactors of Great Wealth come back to Rumba backed again by a full band that's almost the Madison Square Gardeners , except Chris Morrissey (Ben Kweller, Andrew Bird, Mason Jennings) is on bass and Mark Stepro switches from bass to drums (as he often does). Olsen [...]

MP3: Moviola - Prison Cash I'll just let Moviola 's Jerry Dannemiller explain in his own words: "Prison cash. Crown of thorns. 40 times round the horn." We recorded this one in Used Kids a few months back essentially around one mic, except for a few bits. We are full grown men now; when we started doing Moviola, back at the dawn of the internet age, we were noisy shavers. Though the frequency with which we (Paul, Greg, Jerry, Ted, Jake, and in spirit, Scotty) collectively gather is [...]
Chelsea Burgin : Disposable Me Please excuse me as I post what will probably be the lowest sound quality of a song that I ever blog about, ever. A download of Chelsea Burgin's ' Disposable Me ' has a bit rate of 64kbps . So granted, it's not one for sophisticated speaker set-ups or a nightly DJ set. But any intelligent set of ears will identify that beneath the crackles and half-portions is a delightfully brittle song, with Burgin's voice somehow resonating above the speckled, almost-inaudible [...]

I jacked this photo from new Tree Bar owner Ryan Haye's Friendster page ... or was it MySpace? Hmmm. As we reported a few weeks ago , the infamous tree that gave the former Andyman's Treehouse it's name has been removed. Seeing The Tree Bar without the tree is sort of like seeing Kiss without their makeup for the first time - a bit shocking, but we'll all get used to it. Work continues on The Tree Bar to get it ready for the sneak preview opening on Dec. 23 with performances [...]

MP3: Twitter 2K Freestyle We are pleased to announce that P. Blackk has added on to our 9-Year Anniversary Show. The heralded Columbus emcee will play at Ace of Cups on February 3rd. He adds onto the previously announced line-up of TJSA performing Bait And Switch , Zero Star , Sundown , Bill Fox and DJ Detox . [...]

MP3: Zero Star - "Maybe I'm Joking. Maybe I'm Not" Zero Star is playing Donewaiting's 9 Year Anniversary on February 3rd at Ace of Cups . Tonight, Zero is releasing the physical copies for his new album Maybe I'm Joking,Maybe I'm Not at his Buggin Out 3 Party at the Carabar. Respected Hip Hop blog Kevin Nottingham presented Zero's new album earlier this week. I reviewed Maybe [...]
Over the Rhine has come a long way since the days where they'd play intimate, candlelit shows at Stache's . These days, some 20+ years after OTR's core members Karin Bergquist (vocals, guitars) and Linford Detweiler (multi-instrumentalist) first put the band together (and 15 years since the duo married), Over the Rhine is more suited for large stages such as the one at Lincoln Theatre where they'll be performing on Wednesday night. Earlier this year, Over the Rhine released the Joe Henry [...]

This here weblog has been around for almost a decade, and that's reason to celebrate. We'll do that by bringing three amazing bands, an emcee and a deejay to Ace of Cups on Feb. 3 in Columbus, Ohio. Needless to say, you should come celebrate with us: Thomas Jefferson Slave Apartments are not just reuniting for this show. Ron House, Bob Petric and crew are playing their seminal 1995 Onion/American record Bait & Switch front to back . Rick Rubin would be proud. Wes Flexner also [...]
Gonna be a heavy-ass weekend in Columbus. Start off with with the sludgy/stoner/'70s-rock Saviours at Ace of Cups on Saturday night (w/ Ramming Speed, Charlie Hustle, and Yeti) and follow it up with the triple, head-bashing triple bill of The Sword , Black Cobra and Mount Carmel at Outland on Liberty on Sunday. Both of these shows are the ONLY Ohio shows on these individual tour itineraries. Take that Cleveland and Cincinnati! The Sword's 2010 [...]
Not sure what brings J Robbins to Columbus for a Friday night Happy Hour show, but what a lucky score for KOBO . For indie rock geeks with their feet firmly planted in the '90s (yes, I'm one of you!), this may be THE show of 2011. Robbins will be performing with cellist Gordon Withers and it's not at all a stretch to think this will be a stripped-down (yet, somehow, at the same time, face-melting) tour of the singer/producer's recorded history, from Jawbox to [...]
The fact that Ahmed Gallab, aka Sinkane member of the band Yeasayer, is from Columbus, Ohio warms my heart. Gallab was booking shows as a teenager, attended Ohio State and played in a couple of bands that gained a good deal of notoriety on the local scene. He's also been a part of the live [...]

Though the news leaked a few days ago, a press release from yesterday made it official: The annual All Good Festival has moved from West Virginia to Legend Valley (formerly Buckeye Lake) for its 2012 incarnation, July 19-22. This is exciting news to me, and for the Ohio festival circuit. Though I'm not a stereotypical jamband enthusiast, the All Good lineups have often intrigued me over the last ten years. The festival has always had a solid undercard of jazzy, funky, worldly, etc. acts that I was interested in. Though the middle of West [...]
Despite our youthful good looks and our unbounded energy, most of the Donewaiting writers aren't the youngest kids on the web. It doesn't mean we don't keep our fingers on the pulse of all the blogworthy bands, but when we hear a band like FRIENDS , the Brooklyn-based 5-piece performing Wednesday night at Ace of Cups (2619 N. Hight St.) along with The Ganglians , our first reference point is Luscious Jackson rather than Zola Jesus . Check out the early '90s-influenced video for "I'm His Girl". [...]

MP3: Mike G - the Award Tour Ep From what I can gather from a first listen to Mike G's Award Tour Ep that Odd Future just gave away on their tumblr is that Mike G was a really terrible child to raise. I think the L.A. Times said he was Warren G's cousin. Think about the "triple 6 degrees of seperation" if that is true.
