Daily Doses: Elvis Depressedly “Crazier With You” From Disgraceland (2011) Label: Self Released Well, this is just a delightful treat. Mat Cothran (of Coma Cinema) has released a third and (apparently) final EP as Elvis Depressedly. “Crazier With You”, the second song on the EP is exactly the kind of twisted that makes me love all of Cothran’s stuff. A delicate malaise colored with the feeling of freezing to death. I think that might be love. Download [...]

Today, we're introducing a new series called Area Codes, and the focus of this biweekly feature is local music scenes across the United States and the globe. In a music landscape where musicmaking has been largely democratized and the notion of a regional sound is an outdated concern, local music scenes seem to still be flowering or starting up in unexpected locales. So for the inaugural Area Codes, we're headed to Boise, Idaho, a slept-on town living on Mountain Time, a city that flaunts a striking balance between both urban and rural qualities. (Pictured above is Eric Heaven of [...]
Forgoing the drone stylings of his first Elvis Depressedly release, Coma Cinema mastermind Mat Cothran returns with a second EP a bit closer to his original sound. Not unlike his most recent Coma EP, Abandoned Lands , Goner takes Mat's general singer song writer form and spins it on its head. Goner is filled with antagonistic titles, lyrics and recording techniques dead set on frustrating its audience. Don't let that scare you off though, the EP is most certainly a work of art. If nothing else, Goner highlights two of Mat's very special traits: his ability to immerse his [...]

New: Elvis Depressedly - Goner A couple of months after announcing Coma Cinema ’s demise - Matt Cothran’s alter ego, Elvis Depressedly , seems to have taken precedence. A new 5-track album dropped on Thursday night which appears to go against the very idea of the 6-7 minute drone pieces it was originally used for; Cothran now using the moniker to combine CC’s close-mic songwriting style with the airy industrial ambience we’ve seen to date in ED. ‘Goner’ as a five track record is painfully short, but similarly astounding, and perhaps as a highlight, [...]

24 years ago today, the Earth shook, mountains crumbled, seas swelled, and, as a result, Eric Weiner was born to save us all from mediocre music. Tirelessly taking over car radios, making mix tapes, and sending out hordes of links for new bands, Eric has always done a fantastic job of spreading the word. As a way to say thank you to him, and make sure you’ve got some great tunes to listen to as well, each person at TWHP has shared a couple of our favorite songs that he’s given us this year. Thanks for everything [...]
Coma Cinema - Business as Usual from Micah Van Hove on Vimeo . According to Mat , Coma Cinema will be finished by the end of this year, and Empty Palaces probably won't be released. I have way too many thoughts on Coma Cinema that I'd like to pour out right now, but I'm going to leave that for another day. Instead, just watch the exhilarating, heartbreaking and all too fitting video for Business as Usual.

The kids at CITR were pretty big fans of the last Coma Cinema record, Blue Suicide , when it dropped earlier this year. Its gentle and morbid fascination with death and sorrow was downtrodden, yet oddly uplifting when in the hands of the band. The video that followed the release of the album continued the themes of the record almost perfectly, and was made by Tyler T Williams ; a friend of the site no less. So despite the dust now settled on the [...]

Resonance FM #21 - Deptford Goth, Ducktails, Dirty Beaches, Eternity Zone, Porcelain Raft, Elvis Depressedly MP3 of show / listen to Resonance FM A strong week indeed for experimental music, starting with an earlier post we made on London producer Deptford Goth’s new single “No Man”, which you can find here . Below we play an older part of his collecton, the Moby-esque “Real Love Fantasy”. Deptford Goth - Real Love Fantasy ( MP3 ) [...]

New: Elvis Depressedly - Selfless Violence The brevity of Matt Cothran ’s referencing to Elvis Depressedly suggests that the August conceived side project was little more than a passing thought; certainly in relation to his usual emotively impressed lo-fi songs this new side project’s delving into spacey and ambient extended drone does seem fairly tangential. These 5-6 minute snippets of experimentation are ones which surely come from any guitarist and musician fascinated by the fringes of popular music - this EP is agreeable with the aesthetic of dark-wave avant-garde [...]
I know a lot of you have been waiting but I finally got the new LMDM from Steph and once again it's nothing short of amazing. Steph is super busy these days and I know how much work goes into making something this good every single time so on behalf of all EMPT heads I'm saying thanks, a month wouldn't be the same without a dose of LMDM. There are many ways to listen to LMDM but I highly recommend you do as I do - press play, sit back and put your trust in Steph. A lot [...]

After arriving in New York City on an evening Greyhound bus by myself, I’m greeted by a familiar feeling of anxiety that seems to follow me around and permeate everything I do for at least a little while every time I get into the city. As if committing myself to a 10 + hour session of discomfort isn’t enough, having my neuroses thrown into a wild fury by the insane kinetic energy and intricate transportation systems of New York City is something that only gets a little better with each visit. My hopes are that by the time I get [...]

[RSS Readers: See post to listen to audio] Most people I talk to about Clark always wish that he'd make another Body Riddle style album which makes sense but when I hear Body Riddle all I can think of is that this man is genius and needs to be exploring different work, have his ups and downs and figure out more insanely impressive sounds to mash together. Yesterday I heard this song by Flying Lotus and wanted to post it, I think it had maybe 1k+ plays on [...]
