I've heard rumors of Beachniks for some time, but I really haven't been able to come up with too much information on the group. That is until I stumbled across news that the band would soon be releasing their album In Color on Neotomic Records sometime early in the new year. I can't tell you how great their lead single is; it reminds me of the clever interplay that was always present on albums by Comet Gain ...yet it still maintains [...]
Pale Lights will automatically get my support, based on the fact that main man, Phil Sutton, was once part of Comet Gain ...one of my top bands of all time. This new gem isn't quite along the lines of the quirky art-pop, but it's equally as infectious. The vocal has a deep tonal quality that while fairly distant in sound, holds onto an intimacy that makes pop fans swoon. Musically, it's a slow paced jangling affair, with ringing guitars that craft warmth and melancholy simultaneously. You can find this tune and a few others on the group's [...]

When a band with an established niche releases an album after a six-year hiatus, it’s always a bit risky. Should the record cater to fans or try to attract new followers? British indie-pop rockers Comet Gain likely faced this question with their latest release, 2011’s Howl of the Lonely Crowd on Fortuna Pop! label. The album’s success is relative; for fans, Howl of the Lonely Crowd delivers a decently satisfactory crop of new tracks still infused with much of the band’s original energy. However, the album is unlikely to [...]

Love without lies - Comet Gain The first Comet Gain song?! Yikes. This thing is really not at all indicative of what i listen to outside of it. Well i guess it is, but there are bands who haven't shown up here that by all sound logic should have left some trace given the amount of time i spend with them. Comet Gain for one. These singles that tided us over in the gap between City Fallen Leaves (where i got on) [...]

I waited till 2011 to finalize my albums list - all my lists - partially due to laziness, being busy, the holidays... but mainly because I'm not sure what the hurry is. I don't do this for the web traffic (clearly), so I gave myself a little more time to decide than usual. (And as long as this goes up before the Village Voice' s Pazz n' Jop, I don't feel delinquent.) So here's my list, the top five or so have been a lock for almost half a year, but the rest were in flux right till I [...]

A year end albums list is kind of a strange thing, especially when it's one person compiling it. Since this blog is a committe of one, it can become quite capricious. In all likelyhood I wrote about some records this past year that I was overtly enthusiastic about at the time. Now the end of the year rolls around and some of those records are not on the list. "What gives?" you might ask. It's hard to remember which label flew me to Tahiti and which one comp'd my CMJ this year, so I may have forgotten to include a [...]

Our friend Kevin's probably going to hate the fact that I can't get over my infatuation with all things Comet Gain related, but what can I say, I'm a sucker for the band. However, this track only features part of the group, as well as members of Crystal Stilts , so that should garner me some hipster cred, right? The track below is from the Butterbean Crypt EP , which was released [...]
Comet Gain doesn't sound too unlike your average indie rock group, but they manage to lace their songs with some extremely memorable hooks and passionate vocals. Even though it's nothing new, it's difficult for me to deny. WATCH THE REVIEW
Out now via What's Your Rupture? , here's a track from the new Comet Gain album, Howl of the Lonely Crowd . These guys are a longstanding indie rock acts from England, and their sounds proves it. Their messy and edgy approach to writing rock tunes is reminiscent of underground rock from the 90s. That's something the nostalgic side of me can get into. On the track "An Arcade From The Warm Rain That Falls," a violin and a calm but shaky vocal steal the spotlight, some feel-good guitar leads jump into the mix [...]

Comet Gain is at the top of its game when it comes to summoning up lyrical imagery you can feel as much as you hear. The London-based band, formed in 1992 by lead guitarist/singer songwriter David Christian, has a knack for zeroing in on can't-catch-a-break hard luck circumstances and bad situations. But he counters the gloom with humor and hope on Howl Of The Lonely Crowd (Fortuna Pop/What's Your Rupture?). The opening track, "Clang Of The Concrete Swans," swims in and alongside the sadness of watching people cut off from who and what they really are. "Let their howling hearts be heard" [...]

Surfer Blood return with their first release since 20102s sensational debut LP, Astro Coast, an album that made them a huge hit in the indie circuits for the past two years. One of our favorite songs so far this autumn is "Don't Move" from Phantogram; it's simply a fantastic track that you just can't but [...] Read more, get songs or stream the entire mix on Indie Rock Cafe

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars For years I felt like my adoration for Comet Gain was unjustified, as very few, if any, of my friends had even listened to the band. But, with the release of Broken Record Prayers , their singles collection, the group slowly seemed to gain ground with the masses; I say rightfully so. Now, we welcome the newest recording, Howl of the Lonely Crowd , which appears to have a two-sided story-one filled with [...]
