I'm taking a short break from SXSW sampling today because those posts take a lot of time to prepare. So I'm pulling a quickie today for Contrast Podcast #154 , which features songs giving advice. For an hour of wisdom without the cost of a shrink, you can't beat it. My choice for the podcast was "Dr. Bernice" by Cracker. Besides the sage advice about who you should not ride in a car with, the guitarwork is beautiful, and the plodding rhythm is reflective of a hot night alone outside a western border town. [...]

Here ya go, something for the weekend. It's the March installment of the the Finest Kiss Basementcast. If this is going to become a regular thing, I guess I should get a theme song and some back ground music for the talking parts. A real microphone might be nice too, one of those big foamy ones would be perfect. Maybe I should get some advertisers too. Naah, I kind of like the furnace as my background noise, at least until I sell out. basementcast : download [...]

What's Your Rupture has always seemed like a perfect settling place for Comet Gain. Pretty much the bulk of their roster owes something to the jangly indie-pop that the band has churned out over the last decade +; though it seems that the list of bands that might owe a little something to their breezy jangle is growing by the hour these days. Nevertheless Broken Record Prayers is an essential document of out-of-print 7"s and lost tracks (with a few new ones sprinkled in) from this often marginalized band. Full of bristling ennui and equal amounts of sunshine [...]

Its no secret that we here at ATH love Comet Gain , or at least one particular writer has a certain inclination for their sweet pop tunes. When all these other bands want to act lo-fi, lets turn our attention to the true form. This is the new single off the band's newest 73 titled Herbert Huncke. Today at Pitchfork, Scott Plagenhoef got in some nice digs at both the American noise-pop underground and the state of UK indie in his review of new Next Big Thing Glasvegas. Some choice cuts: Here in America, we spent a lot of 2008, and now early 2009, celebrating a noise-pop underground that, in places, takes weak pop songs and slathers them with fuzz and reverb under the pretense of art. *cough* Vivian Girls *cough* Also: Last year, the NME placed Vampire Weekend on its [...]

Comet Gain : Love without Lies 7" ( Twee as Fuck ) A. Love without Lies B. Books of California Released in collaboration with "What's Your Rupture" almost in the same time than the -sort of - new album, this single has galvanized the birth of a so called "Twee As Fuck" label, related to the well-known London Club nights. Opportunism or pure fan devotion ? Don't know what to think about it except both songs are leaving a black imprint deep in my head ! Mission accomplished... [...]

"Love Without Lies", the 20th(!) single from the UK's best-kept (and maybe longest-running) indie pop group Comet Gain , sees release as a double-A side 7" record (b/w "Books Of California") on October 13 via our friends at Twee As Fuck Records . Nearly twenty years running, Comet Gain are releasing this single in advance of their newest full length record, entitled Broken Record Prayers , which will also see release before the end of the year. Having just listened to the totally rad NYC band's new-ish-ish "Who's Gonna Care?" 7" EP, caUSE co-MOTION should not only be applauded for their brilliant nonsensical crashpop, but also for the expediency of their personal shipping, as the record basically arrived on my doorstep before I even finished closing the paypal window. It was actually released back in February on the band's own Can't! Cope! Records, but I just realized this fact about a week ago and quickly snapped it up! Glad I did, too, cause it's awesome. a-side, "You Don't Know" is my personal favorite – a [...]

For this week's mix, a famously sampled Bob Dylan cover, T Rex in their early hippie nonsense phase, new stuff from Dengue Fever and Late of the Pier, and a White Whale track from the last issue of Esopus . The mix is a little on the dark side until the end, but it's the middle of winter, so you and your johns can like it or lump it. Also, a challenge: try getting off during the Teach-In track. Dutch ABBA wannabes with a really surreal command of the English language ("Maybe it's a bigot!") challenge all but the [...]
The Word: "weekend," as in "Have a nice one." (That's kind of what the album cover's saying to me.) Maritime - The more I hear these Milwaukee guys, the more I love 'em. Comet Gain - Daydream Scars Comet Gain - Transmission Lost Back to some good old fashioned Indie... Comet Gain have been around since 1993, they formed , they split up,the list of members past and present is basically a who's who of the british indie garage pop rock scene. But since main man David Feck put an all new Comet Gain together after the split in 1997 they have really just taken off and gelled in a way that most other garagey [...]

Another year, another show. Thanks to everyone who stopped in, listened or commented in the past year ... all 85,000+ of you. I know some music sites get that much traffic in an afternoon but I didn't think that many people would be interested in my random mish-mash of space rock, funk and old disco records. Keep coming back! "Darts" is really one of my favorites from 2005 but it's about to come back out in Feb. 2007 on Imagine the Shapes , a CD from NYC's What's Your Rupture? label combining four vinyl-only releases [...]
Howsit? Box.net was broken last night so this is a day late. Apologies! I've been a very bad LJ'er since I got back from my trip home. One month without frequent computer use has only made it harder for me to pay attention to what's going on. Last week's post was a bit of a cop-out (aside from one amazing anecdote from erinzdad ; I'm your number one fan Mathew. Tonight you get some indie pop of sorts. Luckily I was [...]

Those who know me best know that I despise academia for everything that it is. I've tried to drop out of college in the past and for some reason I find myself back at the university season and season again. How? Pure evil cannot be analyzed, only feared, vanquished, or submitted to. I've decided to take a new approach toward school and create some sort of positive outlook about the whole ordeal so that I can spare myself the misery of resisting and nearly failing out. How can I improve my attitude so that I will actually [...]
