by teepoo Common Grackle is a strange combo. They are made up of Guelph indie pop songwriter Gregory Pepper and Saskatoon psych hip hop producer, Factor. Their lyrics are rather hilarious. It's almost as if Factor wrote Gregory a rap song except he decided to sing it instead. It's complete with swears. " Who is that dude in the urinal stall? " is actually a line from Purgatory Rock and Roll . If you are intrigued have a listen. Common Grackle- Purgatory Rock and Roll
After releasing one of 2010's most overlooked albums, Canada's greatest indie/rap/quirk-pop outfit sit down with PopMatters to discuss places not on Google Maps, the greatness of Kids in the Hall , and why eating food generally prevents death. Common Grackle is about as uncommon a group as you're likely to find. A collaboration between indie songwriter Gregory Pepper and the hip-producer Factor (who are both Canadian), Common Grackle's debut album The Great Depression is a spry little rap disc that is dominated by acoustic guitars, acidic and cynical lyrics, and a Kool Keith cameo that's as [...]

Here's a look at things I couldn't get to this week, or more like last week since I'm in Denver and couldn't get to anything really: Common Grackle The Great Depression What do you get when you mix an indie rock weirdo with a hip hop producer? You get this playful effort from Canadians Factor and Gregory Pepper. The sense of humour drips off these tracks with lines like 'I don't want to die at

It's been another hectic week here for me, and I apologize for having let my blogging duties take a back seat to, well, everything else. Hopefully, soon, I'll have the time to pay more attention and create posts more regularly. It would also help if I were hearing stuff I was really excited about... if you think you've got something, send it to the email address to the right -> Tracklisting: Casa Murilo - Breaking Ranks [...]
"I'm sorry Mom & Dad, but I had a bad year" Namaste Muffins. With all the excitement about The Muffin's upcoming CMJ showcase I feel I've been a little remiss in bringing any 'new' music into the bakery. Fear not my friends, I've got some jams from the boys of Common Grackle for you today and I [...]

Fear not my friends, I've got some jams from the boys of Common Grackle for you today and I hope you dig what they're planting as much as I do. So who are we talking aboot here? Indie pop songwriter Gregory Pepper and [...]

Happy Thursday folks. The weekend is nigh, and you know what that means here on the hill: videos. We've got three more solid videos this week, from three rather different Canadian outfits, so let's discuss them briefly shall we? Common Grackle is the duo of prairie producer Factor and Guelph's hip hop-inspired folkster Gregory Pepper. Their debut record, The Great Depression , came out early this summer. I really should have had a post up on it by now, as it's a really interesting album, but this [...]

Common Grackle aren't the first rappers to name an album "The Great Depression." Remember DMX? Remember when he used to be good, and then he came out with a horrible wannabe Tupac song about his Grammaw? That was from his Great Depression. So it's a compliment when I say that Common Grackle are no DMX. What they are, though, isn't exactly clear. Their songs sometimes sound a like a joke ("I don't wanna die/At the Grindcore show"), and other times sound like indie club pop (the title track), and still other songs sound [...]

Despite the title (and the first song) there is very little ranting about the fucking Pope on this podcast, I promise. He may be a vicious, decaying old scorpion in charge of one of the most corrupt and evil institutions on Earth, but after a little bit of gentle joshing at the beginning I promise I do let it drop and carry on with the music. We have a fair bit of new stuff this week, such as Belle & Sebastian, Broken Records, Li'l Daggers and various other bits, and then a brief detour into Mrs. Toad and [...]
It's a curious combination of musical styles that Common Grackle have going on here. It's by no means unique but it's by all means refreshing, a hybrid between Indie-Dance-Folk and brooding comedic Hip-Hop; their debut album "The Great Depression" is a joyride through clever penmanship and infectious choruses that'll remind you of Elliott Smith's sombre atmospheric masterpiece that is "From A Basement On A Hill". They're not taking themselves too seriously though, with songs like "At The Grindcore Show" where they sing a piano ballad about not wanting to die "at the grindcore show" and describing the different kinds of [...]

Don't know nathan about these dudes but the music's cool and it's more (fellow) Canadians - score! Common Grackle feat. Kool Keith [direct mp3 link - right click and save as to download] Bonus: Another track (but no rapper this time....): [...]

Once we finally got to the point where "indie" musicians figured out they could start making money by getting their songs into commercials for just about anything from lite beers to Outback Steakhouse, I found it alright to start labeling certain bands as "commercial core," or bands who sound like they'd make the perfect background sound to sell Generation X, Y, and Z, whatever it is that needs selling, and has a big advertising budget. Car commercials utilize this the most. [...]
Mr. Pepper has been a favourite of this blog since we started, back then with an amazing release fronting The Dymaxions, later on with Gregory Pepper & His Problems. His new project Common Grackle finds Pepper teaming with hip hop producer Factor, and the results are staggeringly good from what I've heard so far. The Great Depression also features hip hop legend and bonafide crazy man Kool Keith on the opening track, which warrants a purchase simply to hear what kind of madness they came up with. This will appeal to fans [...]
