"Protect Your Own" is album number two for Victoria, British Columbia's Current Swell. If you haven't heard of them before now, I hadn't either. And that's a shame. The album is a rocking, rootsy collection of original songs that are growing on me with every listen. Their bio calls them "surf rock," but it's far more versatile than that. In fact, other than the laid-back, kick-it-in-the-sun attitude, there's not much surf here. (Unless you think Dave Matthews and all his sound-alike community are surf rock. Then, I get the comparison.) I hear a lot of reggae, traces of [...]
New York-based Common Prayer released their cover of Talking Heads' "Love -> A Building on Fire" this week. The song is the band's first new material since last year's acclaimed full-length debut, There Is a Mountain and is part of a compilation benefiting the O+ Festival, a progressive three-day music and arts showcase where participants are paid with free health, dental and other wellness services. Common Prayer is joined on the O+ compilation by artists...

Common Prayer 's sprawling debut, There Is A Mountain, was easily one of the best musical surprises of 2010, arriving like a clear spring day amongst the frequent gloom and despair of most pop music released that year. And now news arrives that the band are currently hard at work recording the follow-up, featuring the assistance of some top-secret compatriots who surely will help frontman Jason Sebastian Russo realize his eclectic artistic vision. To keep us fans occupied while we wait for the new record, the group [...]

Common Prayer 's Jason Sebastian Russo was on the cover of The Deli's issue #2 (back in 2005) as the front man of Hopewell . This parallel project, which debuted in 2010 with the album "There Is a Mountain" offers a rootsier sound, filled with banjos, fiddles and mandolins, that hasn't much in common with Hopewell's psych rock. Russo has been tucked away recording the next album with a gamut of worthy collaborators, and to whet our appetites for what's to come, the band has decided to release a new single on the new O+ Festival [...]

Just stocking up on some mellow tunes before the weekend. I am looking down the barrel at a couple of days of spring cleaning...YEAH! If you're a fan of Midlake, Bishop Allen, or any band with that similar indie/folk sound, you're going to love the Brooklyn band, Common Prayer. I've had two songs from their debut album, There Is A Mountain, on my computer for a while, but didn't listen to the whole thing until recently. If I had, I most likely would have placed this on my Top 10 albums list last year. Common Prayer was started by the former basist of Mercury Rev and founder of the band Hopewell, Jason Sebastian Russo. The band is a pretty [...]

Here at MM we share, chat, argue, bury and praise music on a pretty regular basis…like daily. So throughout the year, the Mackerel crew (Mrs Mackerel, Barry-Sean, Christy-Popper, Dr Roddy, Polly Pocket, Starbar, MM and others) keep their own ever-changing top tens ready for publication at the climax of the festive season. Fifth in line is the indomitable lion of Hixet Wood...Mr Christy-Popper. 10. Local Natives – Airplanes ( Download here, Daytrotter Session ) The first big tune of the year for me, I sort of rediscovered this while compiling my top ten. [...]

Now in the deepest darkest thaw of winter it seems like an eternity ago that the lovely and exotic Common Prayer were over here on our shores woo'ing summer audiences with appearances at Truck Festival and the The Garage, amongst others. Here Jason and Alex answer our wee quiz questions and debut the Abandoned Lighthouse remix of 'Of Saints'. Can you think of two sentences that rhyme to describe Common Prayer? Common Prayer sat in a chair, all the while people just stood and stared. Their mouths fell open [...]

With their well received debut album There Is A Mountain , Brooklyn based band Common Prayer have attained a comforting and familiar sound picturesquely layered with the best of the British folk-pop sensibilities. Banjos, guitars, and strings interweave subtly in and out of one another creating quietly strong songs; tunes that are tattered, windblown, and personable. What really persists in this band's work however is their touch of quirky instrumental accents (most delightfully present on tracks such as "Commonprayer" and "Marriage Song") that when coupled with an overall somberness in attitude creates a [...]
Common Prayer's latest video comes disguised as a day-in-the-life of front man Jason Sebastian Russo's brother Jon. Off their debut album There Is A Mountain, "Of Saints" has just about everything you need for an instant folk classic, complete with Midlake-esque vocals and Wilco-like guitar jabs. Be on the lookout for their next [...]
The brainchild of erstwhile Mercury Rev bassist Jason Sebastian Russo, Common Prayer released their beautifully crafted, psychedelic folk infused debut There Is A Mountain back in July to quiet adoration. A few months down the line and the band, consisting of John Anderson, Alex Marver and Karen Codd, are already preparing their second full-length, due for release in time for SXSW 2011. In the meantime though you can watch the brand new video to 'Of Saints.' Accompanying the song's gentle guitar melodies is an Adam Hall directed tour of [...]

Filed under: Video , Exclusive Jason Sebastian Russo has never been timid about experimenting with different forms of music. After all, he started out as the founding member of indie band Hopewell , whose sound found the perfect medium between space rock and psychedelic pop. Now, Russo has moved on to front Common Prayer . Although the name and sound have changed, Russo's ubiquitous bizarreness and love for unconventional compositions are still quite present, fusing [...]

[Photo courtesy of Andrew Gardner ] NYCTaper favorites Common Prayer were a much-appreciated addition to the NYCTaper Unofficial CMJ Day Party . Frontman Jason Russo has been involved in a number of other outstanding projects, from psych-rockers Hopewell to the legendary Mercury Rev, but Common Prayer have a unique appeal, with excellent songcraft that has a radio-ready pop immediacy (including on the song "Hopewell", a reference to both the town of Hopewell, NY and Russo's other band). Russo and partner Alexandra Marvar's songs have an exuberant, whimsical quality that evidences a [...]

The most appealing aspect of There Is A Mountain, the exquisite debut record from Common Prayer , is the element of surprise that is layered throughout the album; where the plaintive beauty of one song hardly prepares you for the wildly inventive percussion of the next, and where decades of listening to music scarcely primes you for the fluid blend of heartfelt sincerity and offbeat experimentalism found within these numbers. Common Prayer is the brainchild of erstwhile Mercury Rev bassist (and current member of the Brooklyn band Hopewell) Jason Sebastian [...]
