This duo based out of the heart and soul of American music Nashville, TN first came to my attention over two years ago. Computer vs. Banjo had just released their self-titled disc . I listened to that album a lot. I still do. Naturally, I was excited to see that their latest album had finally been released. Riverboat Swing is the title of this album. The great thing about the release is that Beau and Johnny have decided [...]
In 2008 Computer Vs Banjo debuted with an album that cleverly fused Americana traditions to underpinnings of computer-generated blips. Now the band has returned with their follow-up Riverboat Swing. In the intervening time, other bands have come along and used a similar formula. The band must have felt they have lost an innovative edge, as they have adapted their sound as well. The computer
In 2008 Computer Vs Banjo released what was then an innovative record that coupled traditional roots music with computer-generated sounds. Since then others have taken up the tactic. Now Computer Vs Banjo have returned with their sophomore album Riverboat Swing. The hook: the band are giving the entire thing, plus multitracks for remixing, away for free. Grab your copy of the album here.

Another album that's been sitting in my pile of stuff to review for way too long is the self-titled debut from the Nashville, TN duo Computer vs. Banjo . Now, (at least to me) just the concept of the juxtaposition of traditional folk/bluegrass instruments with modern computer technology and all it's associated sound manipulations sounds pretty cool. My hopes were high but while Computer vs. Banjo isn't quite that extreme an example of roots music meets glitchy beats, the duo does dish out some pretty cool folktronica that incorporates at least a little roots music instrumentation. [...]
The unlikely pairing of Computer Vs. Banjo have released a digital only remix and outtake album as a companion to their phenomenal self-titled record. The remix album, Reservoir, features six remixed tracks alongside four outtakes that didn't make the original record. The outtakes, like "DocAngle" and "He Was Antarctica", are simple melodic songs, most of which are instrumentals. "Familiar

Ben is not just expressing his personal quest for flexibility, he is asking the entire country to learn to bend, learn how to cry, learn how to see the sun rise??? One of this blog's best new acts of 2008, Computer Vs. Banjo (album review), have just put the finishing touches on some remix work. The group has remixed Ben Sollee's "Panning For Gold". Sollee was one of NPR's Top Ten Unknown Artists for 2008. You can download an MP3 of the remix here. Computer Vs. Banjo's websiteBen Sollee's website

One of my personal favorite discoveries from running this blog over the past year is the relatively new band Computer vs. Banjo . After the release of their debut, self-titled album Beau Stapleton and Johnny Mann have been working on music for MTV and generally keeping busy. Their friends Ki:Theory , mid-air , Ninja Simone , and Kalesto have been working on remixes of the band's tracks, however. These four, as well as Computer vs. Banjo themselves, contribute remixes to the band's new release: Reservoir . [...]

More lists! Damn I love year-end time. Today it's best new acts. That means that I was unaware of them until some time in 2008. So please don't email me to say "so and so ha s been around for 3 years, they aren't new". If they're new to me they qualify. Best New Acts : 10. The Boxing Lesson This Austin band is helping to bring [...]

I love to keep track of the tiny webs of musicians that seem to keep popping up in my life, reminding me that although the music world is growing at an exponential rate, it isn't THAT huge. I was working on a soundtrack for a video last month when I ran into their manager who provided the missing link between four bands. Back in 2005, Nashville's Blue Merle hit the radio waves with their mandolin filled, light rock hit "Burning In the Sun." Blue Merle - Burning In the [...]

Computer vs. Banjo is two guys you may have heard of (Beau Stapleton, the mandolineer of Blue Merle, and Johnny Mann from Gran Torino ) who pit a computer and a banjo in a battle royale. Well, sort of. CvB's sound is best described as folk or alt-country with some electronic elements. Kind of scary, I know, but it actually ends up being a pretty good mix. Jubilee is a great start to the album that sort of epitomizes and defines it as a whole. A quavering piano, crazy robot noises, [...]

In this week's column I've decided to go back and highlight a few artists whom I've reviewed over the past couple of months. So here's your second chance to explore: Emily Wells For those who like : My Bloody Valentine, My Brightest Diamond Wells brings her classical training to her work to create beautiful and unique soundscapes. Check out my review of her album here. www.myspace.com/emilywells [...]
At first blush Computer vs. Banjo seems like a ridiculous concept. A Nashville duo that fuses traditional country elements with new fan-dangled technology. But ya' know what? The unusual marriage works. Folktronica is the label that's been given the pair of Johnny Mann and Beau Stapleton. CVB (which always makes me think of Camper Van Beethoven), base their songs on country themes and imagery. They have the traditional twangy guitar and vocals, and run those through the computer, enhancing and distorting them. Behind that are artificial drum beats. [...]
