"You moved in slow degrees/A sudden memory/You're a Leonard Cohen song" - Better Than Ezra, "Under You" "But I was caught, like a fleeting thought / Stuck inside Leonard Cohen's mind" - Mercury Rev, "A Drop In Time" "Give me a Leonard Cohen afterworld / So I can sigh eternally" - Nirvana, "Pennyroyal Tea" It's almost unbelievable now to think that we almost never heard Leonard Cohen , the singer. A well-regarded poet from the late [...]
CONCRETE BLONDE, MENKENA ( Star Theater , 13 NW 6th) Read our article on Concrete Blonde . FITZ AND THE TANTRUMS, AMERICAN TOMAHAWK, REVA DEVITO ( Roseland , 8 NW 6th) Bubbling above the recent swell of revivalist, blue-eyed soul, Fitz and the Tantrums have seen their fair share of mainstream success in the past year. Their swaggering track "Moneygrabber" permeated radio waves for much of the spring and [...]

I interviewed venerable rock 'n' roller Johnette Napolitano of Concrete Blonde a few weeks back for this short piece , but she had so much more to say. (She's a bit of a charming motormouth.) Q&A is after the jump. You can catch 'em tonight at the Star Theater. [ Subscribe to the comments on this story ]
Like most teenagers, I spent much of my four years in high school trying to figure out where I fit in.

It was some time in early autumn of 1990 when I read that assessment of Concrete Blonde's self-title debut in a copy of the Trouser Press Record Guide . I tucked the book back onto the shelf and, as I left the bookstore, reached up and felt the sides of my head. I had ears - I needed somewhere to put my ear buds - and, in my backpack, I had cassettes that contained all three albums by the trio of Los Angelenos. I'd missed Concrete Blonde's Trouser [...]
There was a period several years ago when my friend Donzo and I declared our dream of being scientists, vowing to create a ham ray gun which would turn any targeted object into ham. (maybe I declared it and she humored me) Surprisingly, I haven't become a scientist and the ham ray gun never got beyond the conceptual stage (which is good as the military applications of this device are too frightening to imagine). Donzo and her now-husband did send me a lab coat and a canned ham for my birthday one [...]

I woke up early all fired up about this post, but lost my gumption as I listened to the tracks. At one point or another I really enjoyed each of these songs, but now one does nothing for me and the other two only hold the memory of what I liked about them. That was enough for me to back out of the post, but then as I drove to Victorville at 5AM, I remembered that the Musical Fruitcake is not just about good music...it is about anything my freaky mind comes up with relating to music. In fact, the [...]

The drumbeat that we, as a species, are reaching the closing credits keeps getting louder and whether we are or not is anyone's guess. I am now able to face such a dire proposition with a new-found sense of contentment and a plan for success in a brave new world. I have seen The Postman . I had seen a bit of Kevin Costner's magnum opus years ago and had no intention of ever seeing more, but it was late and the pickings were slim. "I know that Tom [...]
Filed under: Twisted Tales driskillhotel.com They don't get much sleep in Austin, Texas, the "live music capital of the world," which is currently hosting the 25th annual SXSW music conference. And when people do try to get a little shut-eye, ghosts often won't allow it. Jesse Lincoln Driskill built the stately Austin hotel that bears his name with money he'd earned in the cattle industry. The Romanesque hotel, built on a city block that [...]
Happy third birthday Cover Me! Eleven brand-new covers to help us celebrate!

Growing up, there was no house in my hometown that the kids passed warily, whispering amongst themselves as they eyed the dilapidated structure and weed-riddled, overgrown yard reined in by nothing more than a decaying wrought iron fence. However, I know from the television and movies I've consumed over my life, that everyone else had such a landmark in their life. In fact, I can think of nothing in my small hometown that had a paranormal bent to it - no legends, no lore, no creatures lurking in the woods. There was [...]

Summer Blinked. For portions of the world, mid 80's in the day and upper 60's at night would be summer, but for a Floridian this is open the windows and wave farewell to the hellbeast that is a tropical summer. For me, with fall comes an overwhelming sense of nostalgia. I'm not really sure what exactly it is about the break in the oppressive heat that makes me run for the music of my youth, but without fail, the first hint of fall finds me scurrying for Violent Femmes , The Smithereens , Thrill Kill [...]

There's joyous news for a hope-starved world as Burger King is introducing a glorious buffet of new breakfast items - pancakes, muffins, ciabatta club sandwiches...pancakes. I just know it's all going to be flame-broiled and life-altering. And the restaurant already offers the Croissan'Wich which trumps all other possible breakfast sandwiches if only because the egg, cheese, and breakfast meat rests delicately on the buttery, flakey brilliance that is a croissant. I don't usually spend so much time pondering fast food. I usually eat it less than a few times a month. [...]

Today's Top 5 wouldn't have happened at all had it not been for the bad asses I converse with on Twitter. When the idea was pitched I didn't think I'd be very good at it (I don't normally buy soundtracks) but it turned out to be pretty easy for me. So, today's Top 5 is Movie Soundtracks and here are mine: Pump Up The Volume : This movie was my version of everyone's Breakfast Club and it was my first exposure to the greatness that is Leonard Cohen. As I side note, I had quite the [...]
