London-based singer-songwriter Conil has been dubbed "the anti-James Blunt" for his dark, edgy, late-night music inspired by his Strange Part Of The Country , the title of his debut full length disc on UK label Great Hare Records . With "one of this country's finest voices" his raw, animalistic growl sounds like he gargles with bourbon before smoking his breakfast then chews on gravel to get him through until night fall. But it's not just with his music that he makes a [...]

There's something glorious and enchanting in Conil's music. It rages, it quenches, and then it tears apart at every corner of your heart, if only to allow you to dissipate your consciousness back to the wind. If your body belongs to ashes, then your mind belongs to the winds. That's how it feels with 'after the hole', where Conil embarks on a journey like a wolf, hungry, and searching for the answers that plague all the questions to life, love, and everything in between. From the get go, the feral growl lurks stealthily in the shadows, stalking [...]

Here is another roundup of artists you may well want to check out. A lazy old post I know, but these will get lost in the mists of my inbox if I don't deal with them now. That would be a real shame as they are all worthy of more than a passing glance. [See post to listen to audio] Trev Gibb - Corrina's Nylon Strings : Introduced to me by the indie label I Am Rainboot, this is medicine for the soul, [...]

The opening guitar lead and the subsequent riffs to Conil 's track Stoned has the strong odour of Nirvana - a comparison that may sound too easy to namedrop. But instead of veering into total grunge noise chaos, Conil's rough, gravel voice and songwriting steers it into a more sophisticated kind of rock. Perhaps the grunge-ness can be attributed to the fact that his album, Strange Part of The Country is mixed by Tchad Blake, the man who did a coupla Pearl Jam and Tom Waits records. Somebody mentioned his sound is akin with [...]

(Not us) We promised more tunes by SXSW favebands and for once we keep a promise. True, SXSW 2009 is now one week's history, and the bands are scattered to winds NSE&W, possibly making this post a bit untimely. If this bugs you, we rend garments, don sackcloth, fling ashes, prostrate ourselves, and weep/wail/gnash for forgiveness. Mainly, though, we just post the tunes and uncross our
