NPR is streaming Bright Eyes' upcoming album The People's Key in it's entirety, and decribes it as follows: I won't mince words: This is the best record Bright Eyes has ever made. In fact, it's the best record the band's frontman, Conor Oberst , has ever been a part of. Publicists like to say as much any time an artist releases a new album, but in this case, it's actually true. The People's Key is a career-defining work of art. Whoa. That's some high praise. [...]

As frontman of Omaha indie-rock quintet Neva Dinova , Jake Bellows made three albums of uncommonly poignant, dreamy folk music — two for the L.A. based Crank! label and one for Saddle Creak. He also collaborated with Bright Eyes' Conor Oberst on 20042s stellar "One Jug of Wine, Two Vessels," expanded and re-released last year. Now he's sought a change of scenery, having taken up temporary residence in Los Angeles the past five months. "The band has moved on in their respective career work, there are babies on the way, and we're separated by distance," he says, [...]

Bright Eyes' new album, The People's Key — which comes out on February 15th — is now streaming in full over on NPR. Robin Hilton is calling it "a career-defining work of art." Diehard fans might find it hard to believe that Bright Eyes could produce anything better than 20052s simultaneously released I'm Wide Awake, It's Morning and Digital Ash in a Digital Urn . But in retrospect, those albums feel less developed than The People's Key . In earlier recordings such as [...]

The People's Key starts much like 20052s I'm Wide Awake, It's Morning , except instead of Conor Oberst telling the story of passengers on a crashing plane, we hear Denny Brewer of Refried Ice Cream talking about everything from aliens that have "reptilian features" to Hitler. Welcome to the 2011 version of Bright Eyes . In a recent interview with Billboard.com , Conor said "I wanted to make a record that was modern-sounding and steer clear of some of my tendencies, melodically. We're over the Americana, rootsy, [...]

As with most of the Bright Eyes discography, their seventh album, The People's Key , is a full meal of nuanced and climactic arrangements, half-confessional introspection, spiritual longing, and philosophy-bolstered rallying cries. Sonically, producer/multi-instrumentalist Mike Mogis dresses up Conor Oberst's ever-maturing craftsmanship as a songwriter and lyricist with welcomed other-worldly flourishes, from a touch of vocal robot effects and a pitch-bending flying saucer moment on "Beginner's Mind" to the syncopated coda edits in the near-title track, "A Machine Spiritual (The People's Key)." Fans of I'm Wide Awake It's Morning ("Lua," in particular) [...]

Between recording a new album, side projects with the Mystic Valley Band & Monsters of Folk, and protesting immigration laws , Conor Oberst has had quite a busy run. Hopefully the hard work pays off on his latest album, The People's Key . The new disc is described as "largely experimental and conceptual", and promises to be a departure from the folk and country style songs of Oberst's latest projects. Sink or swim, you have a few weeks to cast your own verdict with a free album stream from NPR. [...]
There is a fine line between artistic ambition and alienating one's fan base. Typically, fans rebel when a renowned artist spreads his wings too wide, experimenting with genres that he simply cannot master. Conor Oberst, the visionary behind Bright Eyes, has taken the alternate route. After releasing two disparate albums in 2005, "I'm Wide Awake, It's Morning" and "Digital Ash in a Digital Urn," both of which were critically acclaimed, Oberst seemed poised on an artistic precipice. Instead of taking the plunge, though, Oberst retreated into a shell, slowly alienating a devout fan base over the last few years with [...]

Five years ago I moved out of the San Francisco Bay Area for the snowy, crisp mountains of Colorado. I absolutely love my adopted home, our vibrant music scene, and the fresh air here, but no foolin' I do often long for my hometown hills. Over the holidays I went to San Francisco for a week to stay at the Noe Valley apartment of friends who were out of town and graciously let me "housesit." It was a part of town I had never stayed in before. When I first let myself into their empty place on [...]

Long-time Ethiopian Emperor Haile Selassie, who is perceived as a messianic figure in Jamaica's Rastafari movement, seems to be the force behind Conor Oberst's new Bright Eyes song. As expected Conor doesn't reinvent his music at all, but still it's too good not to like it. You'll find the Bright Eyes - typical instrumentation, great lyrics and, of course, Conor's unique and perfectly fitting voice. The new record The People's Key will be released physically February 15 via Saddle Creek . I guess this is going to be a good one! mp3 | Haile Selassie

Haile Selassie from this upcoming album, ' The People's Key ,' due Feb. 15th, (on Conor Oberst's birthday). Taking its cues from science fiction, faith, and politics, rife with references to the Holy Trinity, Haile Selassie and Rastafaris, Sisyphus, Caesar, the second coming, and ultimately, enlightenment and non-violence. "I liked the idea of having a record that's reggae-influenced but not musically," Oberst told Interview Magazine. "You know, just lyrically. I think there's so much about Rasta culture that's interesting. Just the idea of preaching one-ness, that we're all in this together. Which I suppose is [...]

Last month Bright Eyes released the first single, "Shell Games", off their upcoming album, The People's Key, for free download in exchange for an email address. Well, the band is back with a second song off the album, Haile Selassie", and as Spinner reported, the track is named after Haile Selassie, Ethiopia's Emperor from 1930 to 1974. More on him here thanks to our good friend, Wikipedia. The People's Key is the band's seventh studio album, and it will be released via Saddle Creek on February 15th. As far as the album as [...]

MP3: Bright Eyes - "Haile Selassie" The new album from Bright Eyes, The...

One of the most eye-catching track titles to pop up on Bright Eyes' forthcoming LP, The People's Key , was "Haile Selassie," Conor Oberst's presumed ode to the late Ethiopian Emperor and unintentional messiah to the Rastafarian movement. Now that we've heard the song — in the form of a free MP3 via Saddle Creek — it's clear that the Cassadaga -esque track leans lyrically closer to the latter Rasta mythology that looks to Selassie as a spiritual leader, though perhaps not a deity. Don't expect a reggae vibe though: "I [...]

Filed under: News , New Music Autumn de Wilde When Bright Eyes announced that they were releasing a new album in 2011, one camp assumed it meant that Conor Oberst was trying to get back to a certain pre-Mystic Valley Band sound, while the other half figured he wanted to take what he learned out on his own and apply it to Bright Eyes' classic configuration of Mike Mogis and Nate Walcott. Turns out, [...]

As we've just passed the halfway point of the first month of 2011, it's time to finally put a moratorium on looking back at last year's action-packed, 52-week span, and start looking forward to what's ahead for 2011. A quick glance at what's coming out in the next 11 and a half months, should get any music fan drooling, so we've decided to dedicate this week's B List to some acts that we expect big things from this year. Who: The Decemberists [...]

Commander Venus - Jean's TV I listened to this record once roughly a year or two ago but I never really gave it a chance. Now I'm obsessed with it. I went as far as to track down a used copy of the CD (for the liner notes!). I have been listening to almost nothing else for the past 2 weeks. Emo revival 2011.
This song off of Outer South is actually written and sung by the drummer of the Mystic Valley Band Jason Boesel, who was touring with Rilo Kiley when they opened up for Bright Eyes and he and Oberst struck up a friendship that led to him joining the band.
