Stagnant Pools is Bryan Enas and Doug Enas, two brothers from Bloomington, Indiana with a penchant for hard-charging, fuzzed-out, reverb-filled rock with low-register vocals that are almost hypnotically monotone but work perfectly against this musical background. "Consistency" is rather perfectly named, as the song delivers from start to finish without getting fancy or weird. It's [...]

Nice little surprise in the inbox this week from a new band called Stagnant Pools . They're brothers from Bloomington, Indiana who want you to hear their track "Consistency". A dip back into some reverb-laden shoegaze is always a nice change for me. Did I see this somewhere else on the web, was it on Gold Soundz ? Hope more people pick this up.
komfi.EP by Knxwledge. Prolific beatmusic producer Knxwledge dropped a new EP on bandcamp recently. For a guy who produces tracks this regularly, he shows as high level of creativity. The tool is definitely not dulling. Though not all the beats on this EP are amazing, most notably "Feeeedbaq," the whole EP has a nice, jazzy presentation. With dreamy synth loops and samples, Knxwledge layers all these beats with just the right amount of sounds. Complexity and originality continue to be strong points in his productions.

dont know much about bloomington's stagnant pools other than they just released this song in january. not sure if its off a forthcoming record, or what, but i dig it, quite a bit actually. oh! one thing i do know is that stagnant pools is made up of brothers enas, bryan and doug. as y'all probably know i love shoegazey dream pop stuff, and this song brings that in spades. here's hoping to hear some more from these brothers. consistency

Words by Brendan Some music is meant to remind us of feelings, to confirm that, yes, others have felt heartbreak and loneliness and confusion and misplaced joy and whatever else the human emotional spectrum comprises. There are times and places for that music. Some music, though, is meant to obliterate complex emotions and strip our existence to the bare essentials-raw rhythm, heart-pumping melodies, an overhwelming wash of je ne sais quoi-and remind us that we're earthly creatures. This is not a bad thing and is definitely worth thinking about from time to time. I [...]

Even after scoring their first #1 album, Cake aren't taking it easy. In this fascinating, downright philosophical discussion with PopMatters, frontman John McCrae talks about misguided youth culture, genre as satire, and oh so much more. Cake is a band that has achieved something uncommon and enigmatic in modern rock: consistency. They're one of the few bands working today whose albums I can imagine being packaged like those leather-bound "classics of literature" series, where a certain author's works aren't characterized, really, in terms of the developing arc of a career but by the singularity of voice that spanned that [...]

Our stream today comes from Boston, MA-based folk/punk outfit Absinthe Rose . The band includes singer-songwriter-guitarist Kimbo Rose with a core rhythm section consisting of well-seasoned Boston area music veterans Bill on Bass and brothers Nick and Rich on Guitar and Drums. Last year, they released Digging Ditches & Escaping Holes and this EP is the first follow up to it. We've got a stream of Consistency Through Skepticism and Awareness . You can check it out on their Punknews.org Profile

Happy Friday everyone. It's still very busy around here, but the weekend offers at least a small break from slaving over papers and notes, so I plan on making the most of it. On a different note, I had an awesome time last night at the release party for the new CD from Montreal locals Claptrap. This band is made entirely of incredibly talented musicians trying to make their mark, so if you're from Montreal (or anywhere else, really) and want to support local music, then be sure to get familiar with these guys and support them. Now, [...]

Exploited Records are celebrating their 3rd anniversary in style: with a party in Berlin on Saturday, October 16th. The ever generous founder of Exploited, Shir Kahn, has sent over a whopping great 8-track compilation to further celebrate this birthday. And it not just a bunch of crappy bootlegs either, but features some of Exploited's best releases. Here's my picks of the bunch: Modeselektor do what they do best: big thumping techno with a fuzzy, analogue twist. It's an all-growling, groaning, lurching monster. Play it loud and see your subwoofer shake with awe: [...]

EXPLOITED RECORDS are celebrating their third anniversary and lucky for you, they have a nice collection of tunes to give away. They're also throwing a huge party for the occasion, so if you're in Berlin (lucky you!) make sure to check it out. The facebook event page is here . The package contains eight stellar tunes that explore the realms of house music. They're all worth hearing loud, making the party even more enticing. I'm especially digging SHIR KHAN 's Gypsy house remix of MALENTE & DEX . [...]
Have you heard of heard of Shir Khan? You certainly have. Either of the the villain from Jungle Book or of this other sharp guy from Berlin, who runs his own dance-music label called Exploited . I've been paying more attention than usual to Exploited ever since I accidentally received a brand new remix for one of their artists , which clearly wasn't meant for me. And this label's output has grown on me with every release Shir Khan has sent over. The latest one is an EP by Malente & Dex, who both [...]
