Many many moons ago, we posted about a brand new NYC band Conversion Party who caught our ear with their jagged guitars and rugged sound. Since that time, the band has changed their name and sort of reconfigured the way they are going about things. The sound isn't too terribly different and could still be compared to a more rough neck version of Frightened Rabbit. ATH is usually about that type of sound so of course we give it the seal of approval. You can check out some other new tunes by the band over on their [...]

It's hard to imagine that just a few short months ago we were enjoying sunny summer days. 2011 was my best year yet, having achieved a few milestones: four and a half years running FensePost, riding my bike from Seattle to Portland and logging over 1,000 total on those two wheels between January and December, enjoying life with the love of my life (Andi), and a few defining mindset changes that put the two of us on a path to minimalism and frugality. All of this has led to happiness. That the [...]

Robbie, Lindsay, and Chris of Radical Dads sent us these answers to our questions in this next installment of the q and also a series. q: What is the last song you (really) heard? r: Turn Around (mp3) by Lunch . l: Birds of Paradise Lost (mp3) by Conversion Party . Not only did I hear them play it live the other weekend at Cake Shop 's 6th birthday party, my manfriend insists on scatting the bass line, so [...]
![Conversion Party: Favors [Album Review]](http://cdn.elbo.ws/posts/3387936_lg.jpg)
Conversion Party boasts a sound that draws influence from classic indie rock, with squealing post rock guitars backed by clever riffs and fronted by emotive vocals and cunning lyrics. Favors is the band's new EP, out this past week on Open Kimono . "False Teeth" opens the 4-song EP with those emotive vocals, then we get dosed with multiple vocalists in the anthemic "In The Mountains". Though these songs are a bit different in style, both are massively good. The [...]

So we might be a few weeks late to this, um, party, but make no mistake, we're fully getting behind Conversion Party over here at the ATH offices. The band is putting out their Favors EP , and will have a nice little show to celebrate in New York on May 7th, but the rest of us can still enjoy the band's tunes. This track has the feel of a Scottish act, namely that of Frightened Rabbit, but that jagged guitar that cuts through the entirety of [...]

DOWNLOAD MP3: Conversation Party - "False Teeth" Our latest "Artist to Watch" is a five-piece out of New London, CT that goes by the name Conversation Party . Since forming roughly four years ago, two of it's five members moved to Brooklyn, NY, but if Rock and Roll has taught us anything, it's that good things have the tendency to persevere, which is exactly what Conversation Party have done and will continue to do in the new year once their debut full-length And You Are?... hits shelves. Receiving production [...]

At least CMJ Thursday is pretty straight-forward during the day. It's the I Guess I'm Floating (one of my very favorite blogs) Pianos day party. It's pretty much wall-to-wall worthwhile bands including Baths, Beach Fossils, Oberhofer, Teen Daze, Young Man, Braids, and Gobble Gobble. The nighttime gets much more complicated. Of course, part of this is that by the third day of CMJ, whatever showcase you go to probably has at least one band you've already seen, and it's harder to skip around from showcase to showcase in NYC than it is in the nicely walkable Austin, Texas. [...]
Conversion Party sound like they’re from Canada. This brand of aim for the rafters, big tent indie rock has become the bread and butter of the land that brought you Arcade Fire, Broken Social Scene, and Wolf Parade. In fact I think this and Labbate’s Blue are Canada’s primary exports. Conversion Party is brewed in... Read More

I'm a bit behind this week; this show happened last Thursday. For this, I apologize. Luckily though, I hope that my lateness will be made up by the fact that all three of these bands are ones to take note of. Let's start with some ambiance, shall we? It was Thursday night at Glasslands, thankfully not too hot, but it seemed like everyone was at Silent Barn to see a group of bands that I can't actually remember at this point. The crowd was sparse, is all. Golden Girls took to the stage first. I suddenly thought that [...]

Golden Girls sure had some good timing on that name. With certain recent oldies but goodies getting massive play on shows like Saturday Night Live, it definitely can't hurt to have such an apropos moniker. The last time they played a stretch of shows in the city (they're from Massachusetts), they caused a definite stir amongst some of the better music blogs, and it's only a matter of time before their earnest, late 90s influenced college rock starts garnering some serious hype. It's actually Conversion Party's CD release show. I can't even find a track of [...]
10 June, 2010 8:00 pm to 11:00 pm Who: DOM , Conversion Party, Radical Dads, Golden Girls Where: Glasslands Show Info: 21+, 8:00pm, $TBA Listen: "Burn Bridges" by DOM

An odd thing is happening in this volatile music industry, thanks to an endless string of who-dun-it's dating back through "pay-for-play", Metallica killing Napster, and the commercialization of music in general: more and more artists (and not just your budding college solo artists) are simply giving their music away. Strangely, the internet has hurt bands almost as much as it has helped them. For every preview blog like mine, there are 10 blogs giving full albums away with nary a review or glance in the rearview. These sites, bit-torrents and peer-to-peer have effectively killed the "release date" as an ever-decreasing [...]
