Cookie Duster: photo by Michael Ligon It took a while but here's the last part of my coverage of this year's Canadian Musicfest . I ended this year's festival, as a traditionally do, on the Saturday night and dropped anchor at the Horseshoe Tavern for two sets. At about a quarter past eleven, Toronto's Cookie Duster took to the stage. You can read up on the history of the band here but this is the project of Brendan Canning(of Broken Social Scene) and Bernard Maiezza, and the [...]

by Tiana Feng Sunday was the conclusion of Wavelength 132s weekend music series. The audience had not yet grown tired from the weekend. By midnight the Garrison had sold out of tickets. Cell Memory and Castle If began the night with the same sort of droney long songs they played at the Exclaim! Christmas party. Their set was actually really short but felt like 2 songs that went on forever. If a band wants to [...]

In the lead-up to Wavelength 13 's final night at the Garrison , a rather heated Facebook exchange took place on the Wavelength 13 event page. Accumulating fifty-six comments in less than 24 hours, the post complained about the technical difficulties on Friday night during Doldrums 's set, placing the blame on the Wavelength crew and arguing that $18 is much too high a price for a show that had sound problems during the headliner (despite the fact that $18 for five excellent bands is, I would say, a steal). Wavelength fans, music-lovers, [...]

Toronto concerts worth knowing about in February, 2013. I know these things about February: 1) it's the month of purification (that's why Purity Ring are coming through town), 2) SAD reaches its peak, 3) Valentine's Day is a Hallmark holiday and thus a complete waste of time, and 4) "leaplings" are the luckiest people around as they age far more slowly than the rest of us. Man, who wouldn't want to be a leapling? Doesn't it just sound so cool? Anyway, here's what else I know. [...]

Ali Biddell It hadn't occurred to me until just now, but there's a bit of a parallel between this site, right here, and Wavelength . They got a couple years' head start on me, but both of us spent a solid decade servicing the Toronto independent music community - Wavelength with a weekly concert series that helped introduce the city and the world to much of the amazing music being produced in the 416 and 905, and chromewaves by, um, going to shows and taking pictures. Okay, perhaps the scale is a little different, but both of us also [...]

One of my favorite bands of the last 10 years was Broken Social Scene. Sadly they called it quits last year (until the inevitable, first-of-many reunion show, of course). Thankfully, they’ve left behind a legacy of former members, a unique sound and a bustling label and this week’s batch explores them all. Zeus: Busting Visions Zeus started as a backing band for former BSS member Jason Collett but have found great success on their own. Their sound is a Beatles-y mix of [...]
Independent with pop-radio potential, Cookie Duster’s second album – in ten years – has buzzy vocals and simple backbeats typifying a lot of one-hit wonder groups. But main-man Brendan Canning is far from having only one hit under his belt. The six degrees of Brendan stretch from founding member of Broken Social Scene to associations with Feist and By Divine Right, and he takes a little bit of each with this production. Don’t let the cartoonish cover art fool you: this is some serious music Two Feet Stand Up is a summertime Bangleesque tune featuring [...]
Filed under: News , Exclusive , New Music , New Releases Maplemusic Fans were broken-hearted when Toronto's Broken Social Scene announced an indefinite hiatus back in 2011. Though it's been almost year since the band's final performance, bassist Brendan Canning tells Spinner he's had little time to bask in past glories. "We finished our last gig in style in Rio de Janeiro . It was a classic end [...]

The one bright side to the demise of Broken Social Scene is that the members now have more time to concentrate on their other projects. For Brendan Canning it comes in the form of his longstanding Cookie Duster group, who released their new album When Flying Was Easy earlier this week. The record kicks off with the spacey, melodic "Cut Me, Focus". There's more than a little affinity for the trippy, as Cookie Duster revisits the atmosphere often, as on "No Solo (With Bass Gtr)". Following an 18-year hiatus, soul singer Bobby Womack returns to top this week's list of new releases with The Bravest Man In The Universe , which easily ranks among the legendary singer's best albums to date. Following the approach he took with the late Gil Scott-Heron’s excellent final record, producer and XL Recordings head Richard Russell, along with co-producer and Blur/Gorillaz-leader Damon Albarn, adds moody electronics and trip-hop beats to create, what our Music Director, Don Yates, calls "masterful set of electro-soul" whose "spacious, modern production makes a surprisingly effective showcase for Womack’s grainy, deeply soulful vocals [...]
Brendan Canning's Cookie Duster release their stellar new album When Flying Was Easy tomorrow. Today they debuted a video for the track "Two Feet Stand Up" on CBC Radio 3's blog . Check out the video, with one of the catchiest songs of the year so far, here:
Filed under: News , Exclusive , New Music , New Releases Maplemusic Broken Social Scene 's Brendan Canning has curated some fine facial hair in his time. So when we met on an early summer evening in Toronto's Trinity Bellwoods Park to chat about his recently revived post-BSS project Cookie Duster -- a band named after a moustache so bushy it brushes crumbs off a cookie -- we expected [...]

Not that the Broken Social Scene family tree needed anything else to confuse it, guitarist and singer of the seminal Canadian collective is putting out an album with his old band Cookie Duster . Brendan Canning is reuniting the band that released one self-titled album over ten years ago for 20122s When Flying Was Easy , set for release May 15th on SQE . The album's first single "Two Feet Stand Up" is a pretty traditional indie rock track, but Canning's signature bass guitar noise is all over it. Maybe it's just me and my obsession with [...]

With Broken Social Scene in the rearview, Brendan Canning has turned to his long-standing side project, Cookie Duster , for amusement. The band will be releasing their new studio album, When Flying Was Easy , on May 15th. You can listen to the first track from the record, "Two Feet Stand Up", here . Here's the track listing: Continue reading »

Before helping to form Broken Social Scene in the late '90s, Brendan Canning was a member of a number of other bands. One such outfit was Cookie Duster , who released one self-titled album over a decade ago. On May 15th, Canning and his group of mustache aficionados will return with a new album, When Flying Was Easy , via SQE Music. Our first listen off the 12-song LP is "Two Feet Stand Up", a distinctly alt-leaning blast of poppy garage rock noise and grrrl-y vocals. Stream it now at Pitchfork ; the album's tracklist is [...]
The Broken Social Scenester is back with his old band.

"I actually have a full album that's currently being looked at by a label," Canning recently told his former roommate Danko [...]
