Every time Stay Positive release a new song, it's an exciting moment for those of us who are comfortable with the kind of transcendent, late night moments that might also feature heavy introspection. If there's ... read more

Stay Positive (aka Stay+, formerly Christian AIDS) are back with the new single "You Hate Me", the first taste of their upcoming Blood Brother ep. Fans of the UK production team's previous work should find that the Cooly G-featuring track falls right in line with the spooky and apocalyptic techno sound they have become known for. Blood Brother is out July 1 via Stay Positive Industries.

In case you haven't heard, the Knife just released Shaking The Habitual , their first album in like seven years. What a wait it's been and after having a preview of it via Soundcloud, it's been well worth the time. Here you go, have a listen. If you like what you hear above, pick up the album via the Rabid Records store here . BTW, Dazed Digital recently put together a nice feature about the new album and the bands sonic direction, which you can read here . The [...]

I dragged my feet on getting the countdown out this year. The contributions so far have been fairly slim. I know you all listen to music. I know you all have your favorites. So let's hear them. It's the day before Christmas and I've sat down to spend the next 48 hours watching screeners. If you guys are good and get your lists in, I'll loan them to you. You know you want to watch

Since its inception in 2004, Steve Goodman aka Kode92s Hyperdub has been a locus of atom-smashing and inventive electronic music. 2012 was a banner year for Hyperdub, with major releases from label stalwarts like Burial and Cooly G and exciting work from up-and-comers like Laurel Halo and Walton alike. These are some of the choice cuts from their 2012 releases. - Adam Wray Burial – "Ashtray Wasp" It's amazing what Burial has accomplished over the past half-decade. Since 20072s Untrue [...]

Albert Swarm is Finland's best kept secret. The Substitute Teachers mix he made for us is an extraordinary reflection of the sounds you'll hear on Wake - his sophomore release on Ceremony Recordings - and I was able to speak with him a bit about his work. Where does the name Albert Swarm come from? The name comes from a book I read while traveling on a subway in [...]

Flying Lotus [...]

Theophilus covered a Wang Chung song. Azealia is still sexy as hell. Purity Ring turned trap trippy. Flying Lotus, Earl, and a suspiciously Tylerish-sounding dude named Captain Murphy joined forces for the most mind-meltingly blunted jam I've heard in months. The xx came back to save us all, and Ariel Pink went all folky, '60s parents-pop on us. Jacques Greene kept it settled while TNGHT smashed us in the fucking face. Not to mention, Passion Pit came with a gorgeously constructed collection of candy-coated pop songs that, despite occasionally sounding like the audio equivalent of rainbow sherbet, are actually super [...]
Cooly G - Playin' Me Hyperdub: 2012 There’s an interesting trend in the outlying elements of the dubstep fringe, exemplified by the likes of Darkstar and Hyetal, wherein an artist that has stamped their distinct signature sound onto the scene – usually through a string of increasingly confident and cohesive singles - then goes and drops an expectation defying debut album that leaves everyone reeling in awe and disbelief. It’s a bold move, if a little startling, and demonstrates an exceptionally forward thinking approach to their craft, as well as having the bonus effect [...]

Chart courtesy of The Economist 01. Policy, "One Last Time" [ Rush Hour Recordings ] ( buy ) One way to look at Rush Hour's Direct Current series is as an incubator for emerging talents, a safe place to release unbashedly creative dance music without having to gel with Rush Hour's standard fare. New York's Francis Hsueh, known to the world as Policy, first debuted in 2011 on RHDC with the clever Specialty Party , and has [...]

Karl Blossfeldt's "Blumernbachia hieronymi Loasaceae" (1932) [ Hyperdub ] As much as an image is capable of encapsulating a moment in time - telling you who, what, when, and sometimes how - its limits leave viewers to fill in the rest of the details. What lies outside the frame goes unacknowledged; why the moment played out [...]

There's something completely hypnotic about Cooly G's new album. It's as if she was able to distill the feeling of a few dozen late night '90s house-R&B classics into just a handful of tracks, before soaking each of them in the appropriate dose of narcotic reverb. A fixture of the London underground scene, Cooly G's made her name to date mostly off the strength of a subtly spacey take on UK funky. With Playin' Me though, she expands on that formula into more personal territory, putting her voice front and center, and [...]

Cooly G - Playin Me By Greg Salter Some of the finest records seem to occupy their own space – completely self-contained and of their own world, they’re not insular so much as all-encompassing, and they’re often albums that people fall for heavily. Over the last decade or so, Hyperdub have released a number of records like this – think of Burial’s Untrue , Kode 9 and the Spaceape’s Memories Of The Future , Darkstar’s North to name just a few. With the release of [...]
