Corb Lund : Big Butch Bass Bull Fiddle [ purchase ] While upright bass solos are common in jazz, they are fairly uncommon in country music (with the possible exceptions of bluegrass and tradition "old style" country). Corb Lund is a Canadian country musician, and while he does has a bit of a following in the US, he is quite popular in the mainstream Canadian country music scene. Lund's family is from southern Alberta where they are actively involved in ranching and rodeo. Many of Lund's songs reflect [...]

Given recent events across the UK and particularly in London writing about independent music may be low down the list of many peoples priorities this week, but stating the obvious this is a music blog and although Beat Surrender has no 'Mission Statement ' but part of the blogs 'job' is to promote and support great music - the big players don't need assistance, but Beat Surrender can (I hope) help the independents in some small way, and right now they need some help . One of the labels affected [...]
I'm spoiled and I know it. Toronto is the New York City of Canada, and every touring band/artist comes through Toronto at least once every few years, sometimes every year (Drive-By Truckers), and sometimes several times a year (Tim Barry). Except for Two Cow Garage, but that's another story. I'm even more spoiled by the fact that I live within stumbling distance and/or a cheap cab ride from all of the major and minor music venues in the city. Despite living in a killer music city and dwelling in close proximity to the music venues, [...]
An album that takes us right back to the place where country music began; on a dirty, dusty farm. Country music - Losin' Lately Gambler - Music - Arts - Corb Lund

Today, we take a look the nominees for what I consider to be the most confusing category... Best New/Emerging Artist. Last year's award was won by Justin Townes Earle in his second year of being nominated (New Artist nominee two years in a row?). One of this year's nominees actually won Best Song last year, a year in which he was NOT nominated for New/Emerging Artist. Even though the nominating criteria seems to be a bit nebulous, the assembled nominees are all worthy of some sort of recognition. [...]
It's that time of year again. The cat is fixin to head off to Alberta for some much needed R and R. Figurin' since I'm headed for cowboy country it would only be fitting that I should put up some music from native Albertan Corb Lund. Especially since where we're headed is the same area where he was born and raised. Hair in My Eyes Like a Highland Steer is the fourth album by Corb Lund and the Hurtin' Albertans, released [...]

Review of the 2010 Hillside Festival, Guelph Conservation Area, Ontario Part three of three. Part one posted on August 16 . Part two posted on August 17 . Perfect day in Guelph, despite the previous day's deluge. Day 3 The weather on the third day of Hillside [...]

Info on the runners and riders for the 2010 AMA's has surfaced, I always have trouble getting my head around this kind of thing, as rarely do the nominations make sense (to me), but hey if I had to choose the nominees the list run on and on, so I guess somewhere in here is a degree of logic. My winner(s) from the choices on offer below - I came [...]
Filed under: Concerts and Tours , Canada Folk festivals may have started out as hippie havens, but they've expanded in recent years to cover a broad range of sounds and styles - from indie rock and alt-country to hip-hop, soul and world -- that still stay true to the roots of folk as the music of the people. The Calgary Folk Festival is celebrating its 31th anniversary from July 22-25 at Prince's Island Park and has assembled a nicely diverse line-up that includes 68 different [...]
Caribou and Sage Francis announce Calgary dates, Tegan and Sara record for Take Away Shows, and tonight's shows feat. Beatnuts & Calgary Artists for Haitian Relief.
(photo: James Minchin) As you might be aware, Canadian Music Week is coming up next week, and I naively put forth my name and the blog for media accreditation, trying to get a chance to cover some of the shows and events that'll be happening around Toronto. So last night, while I'm knee-deep in recycled paper, trying desperately to find the carpet in my office, I get a call from someone associated with the event, who's in charge of contacting everyone who's applied and letting them know where they stand. Turns out I stand [...]
Here's Corb Lund from Alberta Canada singing The Truck Got Stuck.
Corb Lund and his Hurtin' Albertans bring their cowboy songs and country-roots sound to the Burton Cummings Theatre in Winnipeg.
Have the major labels killed country and hip hop? This week host Lisa Christiansen examines their common roots from past to present and chats with Corb Lund and Abdominal.
I'm steeling this idea from another blog, and for the life of me I can't remember who posted it first. I know it was someone off of my twitter feed, but I went back through the feeds last night and I still have no clue who originally posted this. But anyway.... Are the songs that we call our "favorites" the same songs that we listen to the most? I went back through my media players to determine which songs from 2009 I actually listened to the most. The top 18 are listed below (38 tracks [...]
A little while back we told you about the high-profile list of musicians who will be providing the entertainment during next February's Winter Olympics games in Vancouver. If you don't remember and don't feel like clicking that link, then we'll tell you that those acts included the likes of Wilco, Feist, Broken Social Scene, K'Naan, Stars, Joel Plaskett, Steve Earle, Martha Wainwright, Blue Rodeo, Iron & Wine, Corb Lund, Ron Sexsmith, Joan As Policewoman, and Sun Kil Moon. Well, with the games scheduled to kick off in less than two months, we're beginning to get a [...]
Although it is always a quiet month for new releases, and much thought, time and space is given up to those obligatory end-of-year best of lists, we've still been lucky enough to hear and discovered some pretty fantastic new music in December. The best of our finds this month are below.Shearwater - Castaways mp3 (from The Golden Archipelago)Gorgeous advance from much anticipated new album.Molina &
Homercat will be on holidaze for a while. Not sure when we'll be back. Sometime in the next two weeks I will be putting up my top ten list of the best albums of 2009. Thanks to all who have stopped by over the year and here at Good Rockin' we're looking forward to a good 2010. I'll leave you with a song from Corb Lund's latest album called Losin' Lately Gambler which also happens to be a candidate for my top ten list. Alberta Says Hello [...]

What a strong year for music! I've had a hell of a time narrowing down my list this year. Once I got it down to my top 30 albums , it took me forever to parse it down to ten. One thing that I noticed about my particular list is that it really leans heavily towards the country/folk-ish albums. I'm usually a big indie rock geek, but for some reason none of the rock releases that professional critics are lauding this year really did anything for me (e.g. Grizzly Bear, Phoenix, Animal Collective, etc.). [...]
